may seem tame now, but this could be the most satirical sketch ever in Scotland. The fact it was on Scotch & Wry means it was dealt with with humour - disnae mean to say that even the thought of this would've had a large number of Rangers fans/West of Scotland prods foaming at the mouth (no, REALLY). It would take a while, but eventually players like Mo Johnston or Terry Butcher would sign for the Gers - of course if they played really well, then they were ibrox legends - if they didn't then you can guess the rest...

I’ve just shown my wife this clip , she’d never seen it , I thought everyone of an age had. I also remember going to see a play with Jimmy Logan & Una McLean at the Kings in Glasgow that took on the same subject around the same time, I don’t remember it’s name but Jimmy starred as a Rangers fan who got arrested for throwing an orange at a referee only to come home and find that same referee renting the spare room at home, he also had to suffer the indignity of jumping for joy at the news his son had signed a professional football contract only to discover that he wouldn’t be wearing the shirt he had dreamed about 😳 oops. I don’t know why some of the people commenting on this are getting heat up, if yea canny laugh then you’ve lost before yea start 😉

@CrackaPackify Жыл бұрын
It has as much to do with Northern Ireland as Scotland, madly enough. During the Irish Famine (1845-1849) Glasgow had a huge influx of Irish immigrants (mostly Catholics) and this caused quite a bit of anger in the local community who was largely Protestant. This kinda bubbled under the surface quite a lot, but manifested itself in the communities having things like different pubs or sports clubs that they went to. Rangers was founded in 1875 and didn't really have any religious leanings at the time; Celtic was founded in 1887 to provide a social outlet and resource for poor Irish Catholic immigrants. They established a sporting rivalry and then in the early 1900s with the First World War and the Easter Rising in Ireland politicising issues. Some would argue the biggest factor in the religious issue developing was Harland and Wolff - a Belfast shipbuilder notorious for refusing to hire Catholics - opening a yard in Glasgow due to instability in Ireland. It was opened in Govan, and it happened that Rangers were the closest football club, also based in Govan, so many of the Ulster Protestant shipbuilders who came over to work in the H&W yard adopted Rangers as their team. So it's kind of multifactorial: - west (Rangers) and east (Celtic) Glasgow - Protestant and Catholic - British identity vs Irish identity (you won't see many Scotland flags in either stadium) To answer your initial question Rangers had a long standing policy of not signing Catholic players for the reasons listed above - it was never said out loud but was widely accepted. Graeme Souness signed Mo Johnston and since then they've signed plenty of Catholics, like Gennaro Gattuso and Mikel Arteta, and even an Irish Catholic from Dublin, Jon Daly.
@michaelmcatasney5137 Жыл бұрын
Sadly it's all to do with religion,rangers were exclusively protestants,celtic r a club open to all,all changed when Maurice Johnston signed for rangers to become the first roman Catholic to play for them,adding that Johnston previously played for celtic

There's nothing remotely offensive about this clip, and only football fanatics with religious issues would "maybe" take issue with it, so it's got nothing to do with being politically correct. Honestly, it's tedious to come on these classic comedy videos and always find a "You'd never get away with this these days" type comment (on the tamest of content too), so maybe stop making up problems which aren't there to try and make yourself look hard.

Its the cultural and moral sides that clash way too much as a protestant and a rangers fan, celtic fans ARE the bigots. We may have songs like the sash and derrys walls that you lot scream sectarian when we do sing those songs, crying over singing songs is petty. Scotland's real shame is giving in to cloud minded folk who offer no benefit to the country that wave a Irish flag have erin tattooed on his knuckles but has never left Glasgow apart from the occasional trip to blackpool. To the Rangers haters who post, what’s your opinion on Mo Johnston? Rangers ended this unwritten policy when they signed him nearly 30 years ago, and all he gets is hatred from you guys. For all your faux outrage over this signing policy you never give Souness any credit whatsoever for ending it.
