Hay Ashley, it has been a crazy spring and summer here in Alberta. I planted my garden May long weekend, like I do every year. It was so cold this spring the seeds didn't germinate till the middle of June, then it rained almost every day with temps around 19C. Everything started to yellow, I started to panic. Thank god this past week the temps are in the mid to high 20s and now things are starting to grow. I rely on my garden to stock my pantry every year and this spring was really making me nervous. Let's hope we have a good rest of the summer and a late fall. Cheers.

Thank you for giving us a tour! Most of your garden is actually ahead of mine, but it's still pretty encouraging to see. I'm seeing people in zone 3 gardening groups I'm on posting pictures, and they're already harvesting things that I've barely got growing, and I was starting to wonder just what I was doing wrong! For us, the killer was not just that long, cold spring, but the flooding we got after (washed out and damaged roads are still being repaired). My melons and squash are struggling the most. Both did surprisingly well last year, but this year, unless we have another long, mild fall, we probably won't get anything. Right now, we're actually at average heat levels and getting pretty normal amounts of rain, but so much got drowned out, they're still not recovered. Even our potato patches have gaps in them, and while some plants are starting to bloom, in other spot, they're just barely sprouting. It was such a rough year last year, with drought and heat waves. This summer is better, but we still got walloped in the spring. It can be so discouraging.

I found a way to grow cannabis down where I live but it takes a couple of years. From what I found out is that when the helicopters go over they look for the heat of the plant I think that's what it is and if you're growing broccoli that's what they say it looks like from the air so the sheriff comes by and checks your garden and sees that it's broccoli and after a couple of years they don't come by anymore it works here but we're not allowed to grow right now. Maybe I shouldn't even be saying this. Thanks anyway for the update on your garden and the weather down here where I am has been kind of like you said hot and cool and rainy hot and cool and rainy and I love it. Yes PLZ do a video on the self watering bed. I would appreciate it more tgan you know. I cant stand for long or get on my knees at all to garden so, task in the garden takes me 2 or 3 times longer than it would if i could stand longer than 5 minutes at a time. The self watering bed would help a lot! I could plan it for next year. Im gardening in in-ground beds because of the cost of everything and if i make raised beds in order to help me physically (the only reason I would garden in raised beds, why spend $$ on beds when we have the ground for free) in the garden, they would need to actulaly up off the ground so, i could reach everything from a standing/seated position.

When I check my photos from this time last year my squash and zucchini plants already had flowers. They’re so behind! Other things have grown really well here in the foothills of southern Alberta though: I had golf ball sized radishes, the peas are super tall and productive and before they bolted my spinach had jumbo leaves that I made into tasty spanakopita. I also had some more pests this year: flea beetles all over my bok choy, little maggots eating the roots of my kale and cabbage moth larvae chomping on my cabbages. I managed to pick those guys off the cabbage leaves and I haven’t seen any come back. Not sure if my kale will make it after transplanting to a new spot though. My runner beans, bush beans and broad beans are flowering now so that’s exciting. Has anyone noticed ants on their broad beans? They’re not causing any damage but they seems to love broad beans. This year I’ve got my tomatoes, peppers, basil and cukes in a greenhouse. They’re doing amazing and I’ve already picked my first red pepper.

@@GardeningInCanada IMO the difference between a drug and a medicine is that drugs are manufactured. Coffee is a medicinal plant, caffeine is a drug. How many people die from coffee, and how many die from caffeine? This distinction has been perverted to demonize certain medicinal plants and fungi to fit an agenda.
