There’s a phenomenon regarding climate change policy that is showing up around the world. People really like the idea of fighting climate change and reducing emissions. But that magically screeches to a halt when those same people are asked to pay for it.

I focus on installing high insulation so I can structurally reduce the amount of energy we need for warm comfort and safety. Then we have switched to electric heating. Then maybe next we can switch to air sourced heat pump for heating (and cooling) using 1/4 or 1/2 electrical needs. Then maybe the year after we can start installing solar PV panels on a new roof.

@janetmohn5376
@janetmohn5376 7 ай бұрын
It's because nature uses fire as a renewal process. The fire cleans the forest floor of decaying trees and leaves, allowing oxygen into the root systems and many pods and seeds are only opened during the heat of fire, allowing for fresh growth. Without it, forests don't thrive. We are reducing our forested area, designing ways to prevent or reduce fire and in many ways, our use of forested area increases the risk of fires....camp fires, ATVs and smoking. Unfortunately, it is believed the larger than average number of fires may have been due to intentionally set ones. Two or three starts in the same area, but several kms apart, all starting at the same time? Natural nope, but makes for good "climate scare" headlines.

@@dustyhedger380 Which is why Europe is fast tracking the installation of more renewables faster...as well as imported LNG. A more immediate example is this old mobile home trailer in eastern Alberta we are renting while doing a big, local project. The place was gross, junk all over the yard, hail smashed thin plastic skirting, aluminum framed single paned sliding windows. You get the idea. The neighbours said the place was freezing at the first hint of winter. So in May I started. I dug potatoes in the side garden and started digging around the perimeter of the mobile home. After disassembling the non-insulating skirting I installed a free lumber frame on free bits of concrete and brick with a few 3" screws. I then installed some bubble foil insulation, then 2 layers of free OBS boards. I spray foamed all the cracks and junctions and then stabled roofing paper right down to the ground. Then I installed free used roofing steel and backfilled the 4" trench sealing the -40 winter winds out. Inside I removed all the old cheap trim to spray foam all the deep cracks and junctions. I made new 1x4 trim with my skill saw and sanding disk and made it all air tight by stapling foam sill gasket under all the new trim sandwiched with 3" screws. After sanding, I installed thin film plastic over all 7 windows, except by the stove, and effect was instant, amazing and profound. I think I spent $600 on materials...all else was free through speaking to rural citizens. It was -21C last week and we have not needed to turn on the fossil gas heater. We heat the unit with 2 electric heaters and we live beside a new wind farm. I slowly worked on it after work most days and the end result is more comfort, more energy secure, less cost, cleaner through high insulation renovation.

Do you think companies are going to pay the extra costs? No, they make us pay for it.

@@JamesR1986You do know that a significant portion of Canadian electricity is produced by fossil fuels? So, depending on how close you live to a dam or nuclear power plant, the electricity you're using is probably produced by fossil fuels. And as it stands now, we don't have the infrastructure to stop using said fossil fuels. So I'd argue that actually building the infrastructure so that we can stop using so much fossil fuels is more important than getting people to stop using fossil fuels. Since even if everyone in Canada switched to non-fossil fuel equivelents, for one, our electrical grid probably wouldn't be able to keep up, and two, even if it could we'd still be using fossil fuels to power stuff, it'd just be through a more roundabout way.

If the Carbon Tax was used to actually reduce GHGs that would have been something. Instead, it's a tax grab by the Trudeau government with no intention to use the money to lower GHGs. Carbon Tax should abolished and incentivize the migration to zero emissions technology. Corporations and private citizens are already doing this but it needs to be far more aggressive and widespread. Norway is a good example how an Oil and Gas producing nation takes the wealth generated by Oil and Gas reserves and applies it to the migration to zero emissions tech.

Besides the carbon tax we also pay HST sales tax (e.g. 13% in Ontario), a federal excise tax (10cents/L) and a provincial fuel tax (9c/L in ON). The excise tax is already there because fuel is "bad" like alcohol and cigarettes but we also need a carbon tax? The reason we’re opposed to carbon taxes is complicated, but i thing for a lot of people it boils down to this: 1. Corporations arent being taxed relative to their income nearly as much as individuals. We know industry is what causes the greatest amount of pollution, so why are individuals facing the most disproportionate amount of tax relative to wealth? 2. Private jets and non-commercial aircraft are hugely detrimental to the climate but we still allow the rich to fly wherever they please on a whim. 3. Its so frustrating for Canadians to pay a carbon tax which we see ostensibly pay for new pipeline and LNG projects. Theres so many other reasons why citizens aren’t fans of carbon tax AS IT STANDS. Maybe if I had other options to get to work and back (say, reliable public transit), then carbon tax wouldnt piss me off so much. Canadians dont hate paying taxes when they go to services we need, but it feels like the carbon tax is nothing more than posturing.

EVERY NATION that has played with wind and solar has found both unreliable and too expensive to maintain- Germany switch to nature gas’s quietly after it’s wind and solar failures but no one in the media talks about this and anyone who dares brings it up publicly is immediately shouted down as a “climate denier” - you can care about the climate but aren’t allowed to speak truth cause it’s “ inconvenient” - until real solutions are invented governments need to stop taxing people for the governments mistakes - you want a tax for carbon then let’s make it based on a percentage of one’s net worth not a tax that cripples the poor and middle - let the rich get a taste of the ridiculous tax which does nothing to prevent pollution.
