God I remember that Savoy Brown album! When I saw it all I could think of was the Keep on Tucking cartoon! My fav bargain basement was Introducing The Beatles on VeeJay records. It cost me 88 cents!

In the late 70's I purchased the self titled album by New England on cut-out. I knew the song " Don't Ever Wanna Lose You " from radio & learned their label ( Infinity ) had gone bankrupt & was dissolved. The employees found out the day of closure as did the bands !

When i was a student there was a store near university that sold almost exclusively lower price CDs (and books), the Rock and Pop stuff was mainly comps and bootleg quality live albums, not the most interesting stuff. But the lowest of the low price stuff was Jazz and I bought some fantastic albums there, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Art Blakey, Thelonious Monk, etc. There were really great albums that I got for 2 to 4 bucks, like Kind of Blue, In a Silent Way, A Night in Tunesia or Blue Train.

You just helped me relive the cut out bin days! In the 80s I loved the treasure hunt. For half the price of a new album, I could get 10 cut outs. Most had at least one good song. I would have never discovered 2 of my favorite artists (John Hiatt and Steve Forbert) if not for cut outs. Now, I’m going to check out some of the ones you mentioned that I never heard of before. Thanks!

Cool stuff Larry. A few of those bargains may have been overstock items, like Cahoots or the Lola album, or the Zappa/Mothers one. They were left with some copies they had to get rid of for whatever reason so they stuck them in the cutout bin. I learned long ago to never be ashamed of browsing through the cutout bins; it's like a music store version of a Russell Stover chocolate box: you never know what you may find.

Great music is great music, no matter where you find it. I'm always on the lookout for new music at bargain price. I'll be going sometime this week to 'Spin-It' (a secondhand CD and Vinyl shop...and more) and will take some time to go through the dollar bin!

Larry, you have a much more eclectic collection than I do. I bought a few bargain bin records back in the '70s/'80s. Bruce Cockburn - Inner City Front, Tom Waits - Blue Valentine, Ringo Starr - Ringo the 4th & Rotogravure, Jamming with Edward - The Rolling Stones (?), Anthony Phillips - The Geese and the Ghost, The Band - Cahoots, Steeleye Span - Storm Force Ten, and Bob Dylan - Dylan (1973). I don't remember anything else off the top of my head although I'm sure there's more. Albums were only $3.99 - $5.99 back then anyway.

Savoy Brown's artistic high point for me was "Hellbound Train". But they also did a charging rock/blues song "Shot In The Head".

Savoy Brown's Street Corner Talking is, in my opinion, their best. A top 10 desert island disc for me. I'm a big fan and have just about, if not everything, in their discography. Kim is such a tasteful, talented guitarist. So sad he passed a year or two ago. Savoy Brown were his band for close to 60 years.

Lord David Sutch became ‘Screaming Lord Sutch’ and he formed a political party in the UK called ‘The Official Monster Raving Loony Party’. He later committed suicide.

I did a lot of digging in the cut-out bins back then. Thing is, even though the records were cheap, they were still a risk because I didn't know what those bands sounded like -- "if they're in the bargain bin, maybe they're not very good." But there were a few albums that looked SO interesting that I finally had to take the chance: the three Sparks Island Records releases -- Kimono My House, Propaganda and Indiscreet! All three were cut-outs in Buffalo NY ca. 1977-78. Also Mental Notes by Split Enz, another album that intrigued me and finally won me over. One weird cut-out bin item was Katy Lied by Steely Dan -- weird because they were a popular band, so how the heck did they wind up in the discount bin in 1977?

Screaming Lord Sutch was a musician and singer who mixed with a lot of the top musicians of the time; not an actual Lord, of course, just an ordinary geezer from North London. He was leader of ‘The Official Monster Raving Loony Party’ and has the record for most election appearances in real elections. He would always get a couple of hundred votes or more. His party has been continued after his sad demise. Two bargain bin successes of mine that come to mind are ‘Carnival’ by John Serry and ‘Fusion Is’ by Barry Miles. Both are jazzy fusiony and were completely unknown artists to me but going so cheap I couldn’t resist.

Loads of bargains. The original of that Magritte painting of the bird on the Rascals cover is/was at an art museum near where I live. I say was because I saw it over 20 years ago and I heard they might have sold it. The original purchase of it is interesting which involved a mayor who purchased it despite the entire council’s disapproval, his suspicious death and criminals. The conspiracy goes that a dubious character “acquired” the painting and basically told the mayor that was going to buy it using city funds. There were funds to be spent and the city had been deciding how to use them. I have forgotten how much was spent on the painting but it was a jaw dropping amount. Apparently, Magritte did a series of similar paintings so it wasn’t a once off. Hope you read this little conspiracy 😊
