Thank you for your insights, Larry! I rarely go to concerts these days, so the only times I see mobile phones with cameras is when professionals are filming the event and is left in the final product. My concert days are long gone with the Grateful Dead and the GD had a special section for tapers.

I know what you mean by adding bonus tracks onto the original album , there are 2 examples for the David Bowie Rykodisc vinyls , in the Uk this was just added onto the original album, but on the U.S versions the bonus tracks were on side 3 !

I'm thinking of going to the Amanda Marshall concert this weekend. I admit that using my cell phone to video her greatest song "Let It Rain" will be hard to resist.

We are now living in a ME culture. People take video of a whole concert so they can post it on Social Media and other people and friends (they hope) will go wow! The uploader then feels so happy to get instant gratification which will last about 5 mins. The same as KZbin. Getting thumbs ups on videos. The principle is not much different except KZbin has a business model.

In my city in the early 2000s there was a showing of "The Doors of the 21st Century" and I used a cheap cell phone to record parts. Because the video and sound was so bad, I deleted everything. I recorded museum visits with a slightly better cell camera, but nothing compares to the real thing, no matter how good the camera. Still interesting to watch fan-recorded concerts of Fitz and the Tantrums or Foals, though.

Great rant Larry ! I agree with you on alot of things especially guest stars , that happens alot on award shows. Yes keep bonus tracks separate is good. And yes a few years back a youtuber that I used to watch is a big Beatle / McCartney fan and when Egypt Station came out all the man did was criticise Pauls voice , actually making fun by mimicking it on his video.(I no longer watch his channel) It struck me funny about being called dude or brother because of your interview with Mark Farner, you were his brother the whole time lol ! Take care Larry !

A really good and worth rant. By the way, today Macca said that a new Beatles will be released by 2023, and I couldn't be more excited. It seems to be Now and Then by Lennon. Although George Harrison is my favourite, I can't stand the fact he disliked the Now and Then demo. I hope McCartney did a good job
@jameswilson7084 Жыл бұрын
And what are we getting with that "new" track? They obviously aren't releasing that on its own. I have a whole spectrum of "Beatles Anthology" releases going through my head. A new "Anthology" CD box set, instead of the regular Beatles' remix CD set this fall. And Peter Jackson was recently alluding to a new documentary film he was working on with Paul and Ringo. Could he be redoing "The Beatles Anthology" film for Disney+, or a home Blu-Ray video release? And he talked about having a go with The Beatles' Star Club tapes. That could be apart of this.

I'm here in defense of Bon Jovi! (Just kidding) Great list even though I'm guilty of several. 1) Agree 100% about your point against saying albums are dated, particularly when artists are pushing the envelope of technology for the time. Would that critic prefer the "dated" album sound like the previous? Music would never evolve or progress. When it comes to arguing about music, thankfully I have had the presence of mind to delete responses to this criticism and continue enjoying the music. 2) Regarding preserving an album for reissue, Tom Petty's 'Wildflowers And All The Rest' does this expertly, though most fans already own the original too. 3) Cell Phones. Guilty, but also cognizant of being in the moment at a concert. If I pull out a cell phone, it's to capture a moment that I will relive. Too busy dancing to record everything. An example of a recent exception, on Sparks' current tour certain songs from the new album are going through a rotation. In a fan group, someone remarked they hoped to see one of the new rotated songs live. I recorded the whole song from a preservationist standpoint and shared with the group. I've also enjoyed other people's recordings from the same concert. So not only do I agree with your criticism, but I have both committed the act and enjoyed videos shared by fellow villians! Don't have an answer there.

I agree 100% about the term "dated." It's the most intellectually lazy argument ever and a ridiculous way to assess art. Drives me crazy.
@knightvisioniixv Жыл бұрын
I agree with most of these pet peeves. Dated? I can't immediately recall ever using that term to describe anything; certainly not music. The guest stars thing was never a particular favorite of mine, and for the exact same reasons you mentioned; I guess they turn out fine a good portion of the time, but are they really necessary? I'm tempted to say no. This probably ties nicely into an even bigger issue I've always had, and I don't think I've ever encountered another person with this problem: artists' contemporaries being overtly referenced and / or name-dropped in their lyrics. Something about this has always come off as a bit cringe-worthy; like it's used as a way to draw extra attention to themselves for whatever reason. Veiled references? References to artists from decades or centuries past? Cool. Their contemporaries? No. I suppose context is key - guys like Zappa did it all the time, but, that was... Zappa, and for the most part, I can overlook that. This was also a major thing in hip-hop; Again, I was generally fine with it there. Album length - I'm generally not bothered by something like a 75-minute album, unless the music on it just doesn't interest me much. Having said that, if you're the kind of listener that loves to digest an album (raises hand), and time is a major factor, then understandably, a 35 / 40-minute one is preferable. Arguing over music? Yeah, discussions (including disagreements) are fine, as long as they are civil. Arguments, especially when they lead to back-and-forth personal attacks? I have very little patience or tolerance for that. I find it all quite childish, actually. And, yeah - people going around simply saying things like, "I don't like [insert artist / album / song here]," or "That album is awful" is, quite frankly, stupid. 😉 Long post, I know. Great video.

Hey Buddy! (Lol .. notice I didn't say dude or brother!) I agree with everything. My biggest pet peeve are so called bonus tracks. Especially the ones that are very close to the original song anyway. They really take from an otherwise great album. I think people would listen to the album more without them... maybe playing the whole thing again. Some Queen albums are good examples. Just a vey close version of a hit single or two. Really diminishes it. I often don't include these on my mp3 rips and sometimes make a separate bonus track "album" file of my own instead of tedious-izing the album. I've done this with Deep Purple because they have some decent ones on a few different albums.
@ernestcruz6316 Жыл бұрын
Ozzy Osbourne's last two albums were chock full of special guests. Most of the time it's just a way to attempt to sell the album to a younger crowd that might otherwise not give a older artist the time of day, or a way to legitimize a new performer, but no matter how you slice it it's basically just a crutch.
@daviddanglis7135 Жыл бұрын
Good rants. Re: album length, I'm definitely with you on that. About 20 years ago I was one of three guys that ran a small record label. Really small. Two releases and we were done. Anyway, for the second release, we felt the album was very good but too long -- we wanted to take off about three songs and felt the album would have been excellent if we did. But the band insisted that every song had to be there, it was a concept album, etc. We were very pro-artist; we didn't want to come across as label guys that had to have it our way; so we relented. But I *still* think that album is too long.

Beefheart is okay on "Hot Rats". The track doesn't actually say "Willie The Pimp (Feat. Captain Beefheart)". You should see on some pop albums these days, half the tracks have featured artists. Sometimes with as many as six featured artists on one song. That's just crazy!

I dislike when KZbinrs rant about things. ha! Just kidding!! If you dislike featured artists, it's a good thing you don't like pop music. Those albums are riddled with them. Sometimes Mariah Carey is almost a guest on her own album. 😁😃 Usually rock artists have a song with a featured performer, without actually listing the song as such. I guess it's more important to do that now, with streaming being the most popular music format. As for the keeping the album itself separate from the bonus materials. I guess it depends on the size of the edition. If it's only 2 or 3 CD's, then they should put more bonus material on the main album. Why not? I've been to two concerts in the past four years, and they were polar opposites. I saw Halsey in 2019. And just about everyone had their phones up the whole time, and made a huge racket. Then I saw Mariah Carey's Christmas concert last Dec. And very few had their phones up. And if they did, only for a while. And the audience was very respectful, only cheering and yelling occasionally. I guess it being a Christmas concert made the difference. That show had a very "cozy" atmosphere. Almost like going to a classical concert or the theatre.

I disagree about cell phone recordings Larry. Many times after a show I go to KZbin and look at clips that people have posted. It's nice to be able to relive that experience in a way and every live performance is unique, so it can be a good idea to try to capture it. With the new Iphones you can get really cool videos too. As for the word "dated", I usually use it referring to an artist giving in to the trends of a certain musical era. For instance I think Please Please Me is a great album, but very dated, very 1963. Abbey Road on the other hand still sounds modern and fresh to me. Or in terms of the production, Paul McCartney's Ram still sounds great, sounds "organic", it's a pleasure to listen to, but listening to Press to Play I'm just thinking, how could anyone approve this weird robotic abomination of sound? It sounds archaic now, even though it's not as old. I think that's what the term "dated" is supposed to mean.

OK, "Pal"- My 2 cents- Collaborations, "featuring and and and" is especially ridiculous when the guest artists are below the caliber of the main artist. No need to name all in the title...dumbing it down for those who do not read liner notes, even digital ones. Not ALL cel phone recordings deserve release...grainy, distorted, with loud ridiculous attempts at "singing" do not need to be saved for posterity- Leave it to the fans with good equipment and skill. "Look at me" bragging, save it for your instagram, snapface, etc with immediate friends. Yes, be open to different artists....if it does not 'tickle your fancy'. Try again, it may be a different experience the 2nd time around. If not, then move on. Fandom is relative . I try never to 'fan shame' a new fan to a band. Everyone's time line is different. Is one more important if both are now a fan of the band for the long run?
@dcmphotog8452 Жыл бұрын
It's too bad that people are using their cell phones to record shows. It really is distracting and ruins the experience for everyone else trying to concentrate on the performance. But on the other hand, people are paying tons of money to see these artists, so they should be able to keep a memento of the experience. I thought it might work to ban cellphone recording and instead have a one-use code stamped on your ticket that allows you to go to a web site and download a recording of the concert for a keepsake, but I think people would still want evidence that they were actually there. I disagree with your comment about people "arguing" about music. As long as they are clear that it is their opinion and aren't mocking or namecalling someone else because of a different opinion. After all, it is a comment section - not a affirmation section. And Larry, I promise I won't ever call you "dude", dude. From now on I will refer to you as "the muff".
