Canal boat raging inferno - Paddington London

Fires on boats can rapidly get out of control and turn into raging infernos. The London Fire Brigade comes to the rescue and saves the day. This fire raged under the motorway overhead with toxic fumes, and the firefighters had to use breathing apparatus. After pumping hundreds of gallons of water, the fire still tried to keep going, but fortunately, our heroes got this under control. This was a home for someone, and the rumour was that the fire had been deliberate. This was hearsay but something of great concern if anyone had been onboard that boat! The Police turned up and were making further enquiries when I left, so let's hope they catch the culprit!

That isn't a "canal boat". It is a cruiser, we call them "plastics", and they are river boats. It is glass fibre, and canal boat hulls are made from wood or metal.

I am not surprised that the vessel was so badly damaged. Those so called fire fighters are nothing short of criminally incompetent. The one on the far bank was aiming his branch so high that the water was completely missing the fire and merely soaking the opposite bank. And what did that incompetent for on the mooring bank think he was doing by throwing a few buckets of water. Also, noone secured the boat alongside.

The area under the A40, beside Lisson Studios, is used as a casual boat yard. The cover from the flyover allows people to work when it's raining. It's not the first boat fire along there. You can see evidence of the DIY along the wall - lots of timber and furniture. Boat yards are very expensive, and the people who re-build these boats to live on don't have access to the kind of money to access a boat yard. The biggest fear for boaters is the boat will burn through its line and then become a floating fireball, that then ignites other boats. It's a sad story all round.

I believe accessibility was an issue and the initial crew response did show a lack of leadership. Not sure but when the Brigade Commander from North Kensington arrived there appeared to be a more coherent response. Many commentators have questioned the "bucket" which I did find a bit strange. Thankfully the LFB did turn up as this was becoming hazardous to the Westway directly above. I do not live far from North Kensington Fire HQ and wish I could give them a chance to respond to how their tactics developed and why? the bucket! LFB don’t carry light portable pumps on their appliances. One wonders if that may have assisted with low water pressure or even lack of a hydrant jn this situation. They only carry a 300gallon tank

I cycled along there from Paddington station going west Saturday 13/7/24 and noticed this burnt out and now sunken boat also close by a recently burnt out but still floating narrow boat, further up towards Ladbroke Grove a man was dealing with a river cruiser which had it's windows smashed the night before further down near Willow Tree marina a sunken narrow boat was across the canal blocking the canal completely. Is this a coincidence or wilful attacks on house boats?

Thos does sound like arson motivated by an intent to vandalise private property. I trust it is not what was happening in north west London back in the eighties; house boat owners were being sent to court for beaking various laws or by-laws, possibly legitimate accusations, only to return to a burnt out boat; as officials found new ways to reduce house-boats and increase the use of canals for tourism.

With the greatest respect you were not there. I spoke to the Brigade Commander from North Kensington (they dealt with the Grenfell disaster) when they had the fire under control and he deemed it to be "Serious". There were 5 fire brigade tenders at the scene and the flames were up to the Westway above a concrete megalith which is a bad state of repair. If the Fire Brigade had not turned up and got this under control and the Westway had been affected the traffic chaos above would have been unimaginable. So thanks for watching and I stand by my description it was an extremely serious fire.

After they had put out the fire I talked to the Brigade commander who was from North Kensington. One of the firefighters was wearing breathing apparatus but was surprised to see some of the others not wearing it.When the fireman starting using the bucket I found that a bit strange. I waited around to talk to the LFB and eventually spoke to the Brigade Commander from North Kensington, who described it as a "serious" fire to me. My wife is annoyed at me for filming this far too close to comfort; if there had been gas cylinders on board, it would have been much worse. I talked to the Brigade commander of the North Kensington Fire department after they had put the fire out. He was very concerned about that area becoming a weld and repair facility for canal boats under the Westway. Problem is the CRT does not have the resources or money to deal with this situation. On to your point about the LFB dealing with the fire, I believe the main guy with the bucket was a trainee as he was being given a lot of instructions. I understand the LFB using water but the team on the other river bank of the canal seemed to be overshooting and missing the flames? I can assure you this was a really fierce fire and heat coming off of it was extraordinary. Thank you for watching.

@@LogitecUK The bucket allows the firefighter to pour water directly down into the boat on the side closest to him. To do that with the hose reel he'd have to lean out and bend the hose to get it to point directly down...and risk falling into the water whilst wearing heavy breathing apparatus.
