My wife and I, both American, me in the Air Force, and she the daughter of an AF Officer, met and were married in England on Aug. 2nd, 1960. Since then, we have returned for one-month visits several times, and now that we are old enough that we can no longer travel, you have been kind enough to show us why we love England, Scotland, and Wales so much. I must say, kids, that I am insanely jealous because we have never tried the long boats, and now we see what a fantastic experience we have missed. By the way, in my two years of living there in the Midlands and East Anglia and our many visits, we pretty much looked forward to summer being around the third Thursday of August.

Those little quaint cottages by each lock were houses for the lock keepers who used to take care of each lock when the canals were primarily for commerce. Some were still occupied by lock keepers in the ‘60s.
@AverytheCubanAmerican Жыл бұрын
Yup, those are indeed Highland cattle! The thick fringe of hair that covers their eyes protect them from stinging hail, lashing rain, insects, and biting winds. So it helps them survive the Scottish winter! They use their big horns to rake away snow in order to get to food...as well as for a good scratch as shown here! They were important to the Scottish economy in the eighteenth century as thirty thousand of them by the 1720s were sold to the English. In 1954, the late Elizabeth II ordered Highland cattle to be kept at Balmoral where they are still kept today! Though the breed is actually considered endangered in the UK as there are around 3,000 left in the country. Worldwide, there are 40,000 of them with most being in either France or Finland. Those houses by the locks are old Lockeeper's cottages. Men used to be employed to operate the locks when it was only used by commercial boats. The beauty of the British canals is you can just park and hop of to explore peaceful nature, quaint towns, and more. It's just so cool to drive the boat in cities like Manchester and London and then be in scenic nature the next. Truly a wonderful part of British history.

If you happen across HOLLY THE CAFE BOAT just ask for a coffee and slice of Lemon Drizzle - Jo and Vic. Resetting the locks for the next boat is the most social aspect outside of the pubs. Narrowboating is amazing and the canals are wonderfully relaxing and historic!

You’re channel continues to pull at my heartstrings and mess with my mind. Many years ago as a young boy from Wales I was taken on a canal trip and since then had a desire to travel on or even liveaboard a narrow boat. My lifeline didn’t take me on that journey other than a short trip on the Avon river system near Bath in Somerset, England in my 20’s. Fast forward to today and we’re sitting on my recently purchased 48 foot sailing yacht in Yacht Haven Phuket Thailand watching you guys living that dream of cruising the Welsh canals. BTW we’re having terrible thunderstorms and heavy rain as the start on the rainy season here, looks like your weather is a little better. Cheers Mac and Moon.

This was my home for 25 years. One of the loveliest and unspoilt parts of the UK - where Wales and England merge... The junction is with the Montgomery Canal which is being restored from Frankton Locks through Llanymynech (half in England, half in Wales) and onto Newtown in Wales.

But the Panama crossing brought back so many memories for me, again. I was in Mia Flores on a Sunday, in Panama 2008. Nice to see the tower, layers, and remember my view from the Museum floors of the Lock. Always a joy to see what you guys are up to next! Thank you for the Tour, the Education, and the delight of the Daffodils. Love them, it is always Spring when I see them. Brings back so many memories for me personally. Miss your kitties. I love the Trevor basin, the aquaduct is amazing and Chirk tunnel is so cool, we walked form Cefn Mawr (We stayed with Family) to LLangollen and back again on numerous occassions, we only did the Chirk walk once and visited the castle, it was so amazing. I don't know what it's like by boat but walking gives you time to stop and enjoy the beauty of your suroundings, I would love to go back but I can't walk far now. Everytime we went to the Basin we walked over the aquaduct to our Friends home just up the hill on the other side. The pub before the aquaduct is fabulous, they are so friendly and hospitable, well worth a visit.

I've seen a Canadian KZbinr called DownieLIVE (who does videos usually focusing on trains) do this adventure months ago, and I'm glad you got around to doing it too since it's definitely your style! You're probably shocked to see Mallards in the UK too but they are quite everywhere! Their native range is from Alaska to Japan, and were introduced to Australia and New Zealand. Love how you have to do the locks yourself. So not only do you get to enjoy the scenery, but also get to exercise and work your muscles whenever there's a lock. Fun fact about Highland cattle: They originated in the Highlands and the Outer Hebrides islands of Scotland as early as the 6th century. These days they can also be found across the south of Scotland, in other parts of Europe, as well as in Australia and North and South America too. Highland Cattle can even be found foraging 10,000 feet up in the Andes!

That’s some tight maneuvering for such a long boat. For their age, those canals still look very well kept and appear to have quite a lot of the long boats still on their waters. Based on one of your videos last year I sot started taking the AG1 too and have been very happy with the results. I seem to have more energy and haven’t gotten sick during this time…yet. At my age (73) proper nutrition is so important and our full-time RV lifestyle doesn’t always lend itself to eating as healthy as we should. Stay safe and stay dry, or as much as that weather will allow you to stay dry.

All are welcome but honestly it doesn't need any promotion. There were loads of narrowboat vloggers even before lockdown but it has exploded since, partly because folks were not going abroad for their holidays. The hireboat firms are rushed off their feet and the waterways are exceptionally busy. There is also an expanded community of boat owners trying to live on the waterways because someone told them it is cheaper than a house. They'll learn...
