I have started taking maple branches about a 1/4 thick and cutting them about 6.5 inches long and drilling holes in them and adding sections of Scenic Tree to them with white glue then shaking on some Woodland scenics ground foam!! Real trees along the former main line of Conrail here in Indiana are up to 30 to 40 feet high!!!!

I don't want to sound rude but could I suggest adding bow and stern line ropes to the coal narrow boat, as you have it tied to the center line which is normally used for pulling in the N/B to the canal side. Also you might have missed a small trick with ballasting, fresh ballast around new point timbers, either timber replacement or a bit of jacking and packing! I now live on a narrow boat (which has a N gauge layout) & spent 40 years on both a preserved railway & worked for BR. I regard Mouldy Raspberry as my relaxing channel. no people chatting a simple bit of back ground music, just great 😊👍👍
@MouldyRaspberry3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Wow that must have taken some planning getting it into a small space. You’re right about the ropes, I could really do with adding a couple more mooring posts at each end to tie it to. 👍🏻👍🏻

I love the idea of the coal transport narrow boat. But I would have moored it on the other side cause on the side it is it can't send the load anywhere. On the side of the cottages it would be easy to add a horse-drawn cart with a half load of coal bags and add a few near the boat as well as a few empty plus two half loaded in the boat near the figures. This would create a coal delivery cameo. And the holiday camper narrow boat would be at its place on the other side, adding for example a camping table and a family eating outside looking the trains pass... Still, I find the layout is getting better every new video and it inspire me a few ideas for my future N gauge layout project I hope to be finally able to start working onto soon.

It all looks superb - one small point - the big barge should also be tied at the bow and stern. These lines are called 'The Spring', and prevent the vessel moving fore and aft on it's mooring. I was amused at the bloke by the signalbox who looks like he has a newspaper under his arm. I have no doubts as to where he's heading...
@MouldyRaspberry3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Brian, always appreciate it. I better get on that before it drifts into the tunnel!

The new canal boat is an excellent addition. I assume the concrete area next to the canal is where cargo would be transloaded to/from trucks or, in earlier times, horse drawn wagons. Potential for a very interesting small foreground vignette there? The Yorkshire Dales really gives the feeling of having visited the English countryside in the '60s. Very nice as always.
@MouldyRaspberry3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Thomas, appreciate it. I think you’re right, definitely more to add there.
@OlivierGabin3 жыл бұрын
You always have some room for a canal, and an iconic narrowboat, on an british layout ! I have the idea to put a railway tunnel passing UNDER a canal on my projected layout someday, I have seen the idea with a video from Network Rail showing how they remodel a canal pass over a railway line to accomodate the use of a overwire system on the railway line. They simply tore apart the overpass and rebuilt it at the right dimension, permitting again the trains, now electric, and the boats to keep circulating. Your work on this canal is an excellent rendition of this "narrowboats and steam railwy engines" scenery. You just have to add a steam locomobile somewhere to have a complet picture of an iconic classical british transportation scene. Maybea already planned by you ?
@MouldyRaspberry3 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much Olivier, appreciate it. That’s a great idea. I wonder if anyone had a way to make the boats appear to be slowing moving, I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before.

Thanks Ash. The trees are twisted gardening wire (I just get a role of Amazon). All the ready made trees you can buy seem way too small to me, so it’s nice to be able to make them any size. I cover the wire armature in DAS clay, stick seafoam on and then spray paint it brown. I did a video on it ages ago, linked below. Although I use a thinner wire now - much easier! kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5rSoXSDfNqtqdE

Some tear it down and build anew.
