Great great job!!! You brought back fond memories of my childhood. You made me think about Grabsteins Deli, LH Martins, Blue Flame Ally record store on Rockaway Pkwy and Ave M. I look forward to your next KZbin video . I here a couple a times a year people go to Original Pizza on ave L to hangout and reminisce about the old neighborhood. Thanks again.

I enjoyed your video very much. Thank You! But I just have to make a small comment. I am 24 years old. I grew up in Canarsie, and I currently live there now. I want everyone to know that Canarsie is still a safe area! I hope no one assumes that the area is unsafe just because it is predominantly black now. It is filled with hard working honest middle and working class Caribbean people. I'll admit that the neighborhood is going in the wrong direction economically since the 1990's, but the area still feels safe. Nobody has to fear anything in Canarsie. Many areas still feel like a suburb (check out the E105 & Ave L, Paerdegat 1st-4th, E 80 & Ave J, and Bergen Beach). I walk around with my iPad everywhere I go in Canarsie, and I never have to clutch any of my possessions. Only part of Canarsie that feels sketch is near the L train station (Remsen), but never enough to make me feel targeted. Having returned to Canarsie after college and Grad school, I realize that these days there's been an increase of lower income people in the area. Canarsie used to be a coveted area for middle class and well to be Caribbean families. Now, a lot of people are struggling to make ends meet, thats all. Crime is still low, and the spirit of Canarsie is still there! It used to be Italian, now it's Haitian & Caribbean. Anywhere you go, you will get a warm greeting. Try it one day. If you say, "Bonjour," I'm sure you will get a, "Bonjour cheri," right back. (Haiti is a Francophone nation).

Btw, I want to emphasize that the video was very good. I am just overreacting to small comments in the video because lately I've been hearing a lot of negative things about the community. Especially from my colleagues who had parents who lived in Canarsie. The community has changed, but it still merits defending!

Great job on this video. Seeing this in May of 2020, and glad you were able to capture some of what was left of old Canarsie back in 2014. The old neighborhood has changed even more today. God bless.

Jonas and Audra great job! Your pictures and commentary brought back a lot of memories. I lived on E. 102 between Flatlands and Glenwood in the 60's and 70's. Then lived on 94th between N and Seaview until 1980. Sorry to see your house is gone - I used to play with my friends in the vacant lot behind it. Glad to see Original and Armando's Pizza are still there - your commentary about Armando's square pizza is spot on. They also had great grape drink out of the Jet Spray. When I used to sell Couriers they were a dime. I used to feel badly about what happened to the neighborhood, but now I realize that a new generation gets to build their childhoods there. It's a different culture, but what they have now has meaning for them. Be as happy with your sweet memories as I am with mine my friends.

I didn't grow up in Canarsie but have some familiarity with it. Went to singles dances at Le Parc, called "Calculated Couples". You'd fill out an index card then they'd match you up. That got me a few dates and not much more! I had a girlfriend who lived near South Shore HS and before I'd get to her house, I'd pick up a pizza at Original's. Delicious! Glad to see it's still around. And yes, I do remember the Christmas display at Guarino's! Last and certainly not least, the Seaview Diner where they made great omelettes. During the disco era, lots of young women from Canarsie would make the trip to such Long Island hot spots as Fokos, Uncle Sam's, Channel 80, 231 and others. They were always the hottest women in the place! Sad to see such a closely knit, beautiful community change so much.

Nice Job guys! Wish it was still our neighborhood. I live in a town where everyone grew up together and stayed there. Canarsie used to be a place like that, unfortunately our generation never got to raise our kids there.

It’s just different now. I grew up their in the 80s but to be fair the 80s was a different era all together. I’m sure a lot of Brooklyn neighborhoods were like Canarsie in the 80s but it’s the childhood memories we all miss and Canarsie was a part of that for me. I finally left in 2000
