We had this exact same noise happening in Manchester UK, it could be heard for miles. I've encountered this noise before as an industrial HVAC technician. We completed an upgrade on a schools boiler plant last year and shortly there after neighbors began to complain about a harmonic hum. It ended up being the exhaust off of the new high efficiency boilers we installed. If the exhaust venting is too short mufflers need to be installed. After the mufflers were installed the noise went away.

This also happened in San Francisco a couple years ago . It occurred after adding a new feature on the Golden Gate bridge. Depending on the direction of the wind and wind speed, the noise would be created which was audible for miles in each direction. It would come and go much like this instance. In this instance, I would think it's possible that this could also be the result of a new architectural feature of sorts on a building or a bridge 🤔. The Golden Gate bridge issue was eventually mitigated after over a year of spooky/eerie sounds heard throughout all of the surrounding cities. The issue gained so much traction that an artist created a musical album with the sounds, which is on Spotify to this day.

If I had to guess, it's probably something like a big cistern as part of the sewers and when it drains or fills the displaced air moves through some ventilation piping to make the noise. It's the same principle as air moving through an organ pipe to cause noise. If you've ever worked with big industrial tanks or on a ship with ballast tanks, you know the displaced air moving through pipes can make particular whistles or hums when the fluid is being moved about.

Continue detecting and plotting the direction from a multiple of points around the city. Gradually a radial direction should emerge, with some single or general point of origin. This will take a lot of plotting because of echos off hard surfaces around the city, but gradually a source will emerge.

I recall, in another state, there was a loud deep humming sound that only 2-3 people on the block would hear throughout the night, and sometimes in the day. No one, and none of the utility companies, nor police, nor firemen knew what it was. So the neighbors who heard it began to look at what they had in common. And what that was was a satellite antenna on their roofs, that was picking up signals from some kind of radar device that a common neighbor, who's house they surrounded, must have had. (A device such as a police radio radar.) But in the case of an entire neighborhood hearing it, it could have to do with either a new cable system, or the wind against metal in a new construction. And the mystery goes on! 🤔

@d Proof: In the Book of Revelation, seven trumpets are sounded, one at a time, to cue apocalyptic events seen by John of Patmos (Revelation 1:9) in his vision (Revelation 1:1). The seven trumpets are sounded by seven angels and the events that follow are described in detail from Revelation Chapters 8 to 11. According to Revelation 8:1-2 the angels sound these trumpets after the breaking of the seventh seal. These seals secured the apocalyptic document held in the right hand of Him who sits on the throne.[1] The trumpets are referred to in Koine Greek as σάλπιγξ (sálpinx, salpinx); this was a straight, narrow bronze tube with a mouthpiece of bone and a bell; they do not resemble modern trumpets. We have a similar issue in our town…a pulsing wave of sound being emitted from turbines on the roof of a local manufacturing plant. They finger going around the crystal glass describes it quite nicely. They are “trying” to fix it but it has been nearly 2 years-often keeps me awake at night. Good luck getting to the bottom of the issue. Some neighbors have purchased white noise devices to help them sleep. The wind direction and air density also factor into the intensity of the sound.
@christiedawn76632 жыл бұрын
I was just leaving a comment about how some of the houses in regular neighborhoods are being used as ventilation houses for the subway system and your wind turbine description sounds like it’s possible one of these as the culprit. I just saw the news segment this week and they were showing how the houses are in regular neighborhoods but they are used for ventilation and some have emergency exits! Normal houses all around, it could be the problem!
@lakesnake20052 жыл бұрын
They are not trying to fix it as long as profit is involved. The worship of money precludes caring about Human Beings. Whomever profits from the situation is not exposed to it and does not care. That's just where things are anymore. We allow corporations to dictate policy and this is the result. Government should be by and for its Citizens, but we made this problem ourselves and until Profit is removed from Government we will live with this and it WILL get worse until we are nothing but cogs in the machine. Perhaps they could pinpoint the frequencies, measure how many decibels it is at that specific frequency, and then move around to see where it reads higher. If you had the equipment on multiple vehicles it should be easy to pinpoint the source rather quickly. I’m not sure how much other city noises would interfere, but as they are not a constant, it should be easy to separate those from the constant oscillating hum when looking at the readings.

@jamescamarillo47272 жыл бұрын
Honestly this could happen whenever there there a long, hollow tubes planted into a solid base- piping into the ground, construction sites, on rooftops, etc. where wind gusts can create a harmonic resonance as it blows across the tubular structure. The pipe or tube begins to vibrate as it’s fixed on one end and open on the other. You hear this with metal because it has a relatively low natural resonant frequency characteristic to the longer length of pipe- longer wavelength- lower pitch capable of amplifying and traveling over long distances.

It’s most likely a single cable which is very long mooring a crane or some equipment to a building being built. The cable is tight and metal but it has just enough give to swirl in a continuous “jump rope” type style when the wind hits it. When it’s far more quiet at night and the cable equalizes it’s spinning it sustains a constant resonance. It’s wind on a cable when it’s quieter at night !

Most likely the wind is vibrating something to resonance. Take not of the wind speed and direction when you hear it. You can then get an idea of when to expect it based on weather forecasts. Using a directional parabolic microphone from a high place would help to get a fix on the direction it is coming from. Do that from multiple places and you will triangulate a location of the sound. The Weather Underground website has historical weather including wind direction and speed on particular dates and times so that can be of use to figure out what the wind was doing last time you heard it. The Golden Gate bridge makes a sound in certain wind conditions too and people are complaining about that as well.

The Golden Gate Bridge here in San Francisco makes that exact sound on windy days. It’s known to be wind blowing through slats on the bridge. The sound in Brooklyn is perhaps wind glowing through scaffolding - a phenomenon I’ve also heard in SF.

Good example, Mr. Arnold. This could also be due to the high riser buildings in close proximity, coupled with the wind tunnel effect between these high riser building and aging or loosened building rain screen or exterior metal panel system on any one of these high riser building thrown into the mix and this humming noise might be due to happen only when the wind blows… Just a thought.

I've heard/felt subwoofer bass from an unknown source. The resonance will carry up to a mile and the sound/vibration _increases_ further from the point of origin. The worst thing is you can't identify where it's coming from because it's less pronounced at the source. Very, very, very annoying at 2:30am.

I have severe very loud very high frequency tinnitus, I don't think there's any more room in my head for more mysterious sounds...and yes, trying to sleep when my head is screaming so high pitched and the pressure build up like a kettle about to boil is daily and nightly torture. Although, my little 3 year old granddaughter has been complaining about a bee in her ear lately, a buzzing sound I guess. And it's progressed to her heard hurting. Maybe she's sensing this mysterious noise. We live in Australia, so not sure if it's localised to your area or everywhere

I've heard this kind of sound in two different cities in different parts of the world. The first time it was in a big city, and I thought it was a pretty loud concert happening at a distance. That city has never had any seismic activity in the last million years. The second time was in a smaller city that has some seismic activity but has no buildings higher than three floors. This time it couldn't have been live music because I was in a suburban area where people are very sensitive to noise.

I live in a small town and hear this type of humming occasionally. It’s the street signs/light posts, the wind hits it like if you’re trying to play flute on a bottle, so it’s just the right angle to make a humming noise. There has to be something (maybe multiple something’s) in that city that when they get hit by the wind just right, it plays it like a flute.

We were hearing the same sound in a rural subdivision in the woods 12 miles away from the nearest town in northern Arizona. It would go on for a week or so, then go away for a week or so. Went on for about a year and us locals were searching everywhere for the source but never found it. That was over ten years ago and I can still remember exactly how it sounded, and that was definitely it. A neighbor of ours swore it had something to do with the magnetic field around the earth being somehow disrupted. We never found out if that was it, but it was the most plausible thing we could think of, so we went with it.
