After seeing this, I'm convinced that shutting down both tunnels is necessary. The headache that would be shutting down only one tunnel is worthless.

What if you saw another video explaining that 1 tunnel could keep trains running every 6 minutes in each direction and that a shutdown between Lorimer and Bedford is not actually necessary?

@ferociouslettuce

Kenny J that's not true. L train currently runs every 3 minutes (at peak) with 2 tunnels. If some construction is done in front of the 1st ave and bedford stations over the course of 2017 and 2018, 1 tunnel can be optimized to continually send trains every 3 minutes rotating between brooklyn and manhattan bound.
@BeenSauce
@BeenSauce 8 жыл бұрын
Andy Okuneff So the way you look at it, is that if only one tunnel is running therefor service should only be reduced by half? Then you're stating that it can be optimized to run even FASTER in your following post? I don't think you have any concept of how the system operates, especially when there's crews doing major construction. It's not just "some construction", an entire tunnel being shut down is a massive undertaking and requires major resources, which will require the track to have flatbed cars to hold construction equipment likely as far as 6th ave all the way into Lorimer. The reason the trains likely have to end at Lorimer is for layover of both passenger service trains, and construction crew's diesel and flatbed trains. This does not allow for any switching of tracks to "optimize" anything. Besides, why the hell would you want to take a train through stations that will be massively crowded with at least half of Bedford Ave station being closed off and used by construction teams, with all the fumes of the equipment and the dust in the air?
@ferociouslettuce
@ferociouslettuce 8 жыл бұрын
If over the next 2 years, construction was implemented on Bedford and 1st Ave, trains could run half as frequently (every 6 minutes) as they currently do. I don't think you have any concept of how the system operates, especially when there's crews with exorbitant budgets doing major construction to dismiss this.

Hopefully while repairing the tunnel, maybe you can renovate some of the stations in Manhattan as well (And not just add new elevators and stairs at first avenue and Bedford avenue) For example: Look at 6th avenue. That station is falling into pieces. Pieces of the walls have chipped away, there are dirty stains from spot to spot, and even some rats appear from time to time. It's just in a horrid condition compared to Union square and 8th avenue. Hopefully you guys can refurbish it during the tunnel repairs.

I should also mention to ease crowding problems during the l train shutdown, they should bring back the V, this time have it run via the 63rd Street branch while the F can run via 53rd with the E like it did in the 1990’s, and even extend the G back up to Forest Hills (or even further to either Jamaica 179th or Jamaica Center).

Finally MTA is caring about educating the public on what exactly happened. It would be helpful for an engineer to get into more detail on how the duct bank was so easily penetrated by salt water. Was it the duration of time of submersion that led to it? It's understood that the water had to be pumped out. I remember it took about a month. As a result to prepare for future Sandy's should we be using another material? I think engineering quality and flexibility must improve for the MTA to not break down under it's own weight both physically and politically. The city is completely dependent upon this system and we need to do something that can future proof it and create stop gap measures to improve conditions NOW.

For everyone saying that they shouldn’t do the 3 year option, that one would only close one track at a time, meaning trains could still run through the tunnel but at a slower rate. So either you get no service for 18 months or you get limited service for twice as long. Sounds like a more reasonable option to me given how many people rely on the line.

why can't trains continue to run every 6 minutes with just 1 tunnel? why does route between bedford and lorimer need to shut down during the 1 line at a time plan?
@BrIaNMeRcY1022
@BrIaNMeRcY1022 8 жыл бұрын
+Andy Okuneff It is logistically impossible. Under the one tube closure, a train at Union Square can't proceed of a train is either at 1st or 3rd Avenues or at Bedford Avenue. This severely limits the amount of trains that can run. Additionally, under the one tube closure, the 8th to Bedford segment can only run at 4-5 TPH (trains per hour).
@ferociouslettuce
@ferociouslettuce 8 жыл бұрын
BrIaNMeRcY1022 can you rephrase your 2nd sentence please? Also, each tunnel runs 20 trains per hour typically. 1 tunnel can run 10 trains per hour in each direction.. Very disappointing that the mta is not seriously considering the 1 tunnel at a time option.
@BrIaNMeRcY1022
@BrIaNMeRcY1022 8 жыл бұрын
+Andy Okuneff I don't have to rephrase anything. One tunnel CAN'T run 10 TPH at all. It it logistically impossible. The reason for the proposed 12-15 minute headway's is to allow breathing room. Anything over 5 TPH would lead to bottle necks. In the end, (L) riders are going to be forced to deal with it. If they want to continue to ride the (L) line for years, let the TA close both tubes. People think the (L) closure is isolated to Brooklyn, people in the East Village & Lower East Side have to put up with it as well.
@ferociouslettuce
@ferociouslettuce 8 жыл бұрын
BrIaNMeRcY1022 "let the TA close both tubes" No. These trains can be logistically optimized to run every 6 minutes in each direction - a digital logic design class (freshman/sophomore level engineering) at Cooper Union can do it for the MTA if they're unwilling to do it themselves.. Interestingly, MTA's Peter Cafiero, the former president of the Cooper Union Alumni Association, once insisted President Jamshed Bharucha and Chairman Mark Epstein were the future of Cooper Union (both are long gone). Though Cafiero once insisted ‘transparency’ meant ‘I don’t want to hear what you are saying so I will just shout and not listen and maybe I won’t hear it anymore’, he was proven incorrect before and as we flesh out who came up with "plan b" and how to optimize it, we will again realize this plan has not been fleshed out.

Around 1963 I travelled on this line at night with my parents and brother from the last stop in Canarsie to its last stop in Manhattan near where we lived. It went through some of the worst and most dangerous slums in nyc. The train and the stations were literally fallng to bits, with most of the lights out and not replaced. Passengers looked like obvious violent criminals. This was the scariest ride I have ever been on. I am still surprised we made it home in one piece, after nearly 60 years.

Wow, I took the L train for years and I never knew the tunnel went under the river besides since the tunnel is in bad shape; it's crutial to even close it. I understand us customers need service but life is more important. At this point the shuttle should everyday until the tracks and tunnel can be completely renovated. I think all the customers in Carnarsie needs to see this video so they can understand. I mean a tunnel since 1924 definitely need to have a full repair. Some Express shuttle buses and local shuttles with common sense route. Some of the shuttle route MTA chooses doesn't make any sense actually more of an inconvenience but needs a better strategy for shuttle routes.

When they shut down Montague St. a few years ago, just before that they shut service across the Manhattan Bridge for N and Q trains for several weekends. The D could not be rerouted but that presented no problem. This was done to stabilize the bridge as they would be heavily dependent on it for the next year and a few months. If they shut down the Canarsie Tunnel - by far the better plan - they would have to do the same with the Williamsburgh Bridge for the same reason, just before the tunnel work gets under way.

Andy Okuneff I don't think you realize the costs of construction these days. Yes, they can be lower and more efficient than they are now, but we don't have time to squabble over that, if the L train is going to get fixed. The 3-year option requires the shutdown of one track, as mentioned in the video. The first crossover switch west of the Canarsie tubes is just to the west of 3rd Avenue station. The closest one to the eastern end is just to the east of Bedford Avenue. That means that an L train would have to travel from 3rd Avenue to Bedford Avenue in under three minutes for your 6 minute per direction headway to work. I checked Google Maps, and it says it currently takes 5 minutes to travel that distance via the L train, and that's with both tunnels open (less queueing). There is no way to get them to run every 6 minutes per direction without skipping at least two of those stations. And if they were to skip two of the three stations on the single-track segment, they might as well shut both tubes down.

it would be expensive to build an extra tunnel; however, mta got an extra $1B from the state last year. If they used a chunk of that money and started Jan 1 2017 on a new tunnel, they'd have 2 operational tunnels for the duration of construction and a 3rd which could expand future routed!

Mihail Vovk It would take longer to build new ones then shut down the old tunnels. Also, why build new tunnels when the tunnel is structurally safe? All they have to do is demolish the duct bank and replace the communication cables. The work would only disrupt service for 15 months.

There's always another option. I'm not an engineer, just a problem solver. What if the MTA constructs a tube tunnel offsite? Just like the construction on Boston's Big Dig project. They submerge these new tunnels section by section, then when everything is connected, they remove the old sections.
@JeffDeWitt
@JeffDeWitt 8 жыл бұрын
+Aneudi Diaz I expect if they had to replace the tunnels that's exactly what they'd do, but here it looks like the tunnels are structurally sound, just the cable channels are damaged. It would be a LOT more expensive to replace the tunnels instead of fixing them.

Some people try to come up with half-baked ideas to make things easier for the entitled. The work on the (M) & (L) line must be done. If the TA does nothing, prepare to face delays and create an hazard for the riding public.
@ferociouslettuce
@ferociouslettuce 8 жыл бұрын
"the entitled" = employees who give themselves millions to not minimize impact on community. 2 transitional elements is such a ridiculous "half baked" idea lol. How dare we ask that $2.75/ride entitlement + $1.8B in fed+state funding to do a job of laying down 3miles of new buswork (in a list of typical costs - it would cost the same to construct brand new tunnels pedestrianobservations.wordpress.com/2013/06/03/comparative-subway-construction-costs-revised/ ). Estimating the cost as double for demolition as it is to lay new cable into the space (demolition is not a specialized field - anyone can do it with limited training), this doesn't even come close to the $1.8B that has been allocated. But whatever, let's take the side of the people that are disappearing money because we're cowards and want our kids to grow up in the same environment we did.
@Hypestrike1

While the Manhattan section of the line is shut down, one potentially feasible idea could be to extend the tail tracks west along 14th Street to the Hudson River. A new terminal station could be built that better serves Chelsea and MePa residents, relieves some congestion along 14th Street and allowing provisions for a future connection to the 7 train, if it is ever extended south from 34th Street-Hudson Yards. Brooklyn residents would also have a direct one-seat ride to the Chelsea Piers, Hudson River Park and all the excitement of the new far west side. Only three or four blocks worth of tunnelling would be needed from Eighth Avenue and part of the tunnelling would be incorporated into a new terminal station anyway (and new tail tracks), so it doesn't seem so far-fetched from an engineering point of view. In reality there's money and ridership issues, but I see all over the system opportunities where (relatively) short new tunnels could make big differences in knitting together the Subway to enable better mobility.

This would be a good idea if L trains still ran in Manhattan, but if there is no service in Manhattan for a whole 1 and a half years, it would be temporarily a waste. Speaking about service in Manhattan, why couldn't they close both tunnels, and limited service between 8th ave and 1st ave? Therefore using the quickest possible way to repair the tunnel but also having the train run in Manhattan. Also, the new tunnels you were talking about could serve as places that trains can sleep at night instead of the Canarsie yard which is not accessible by Manhattan trains.
@TheRailLeaguer
@TheRailLeaguer 6 жыл бұрын
Jr2 Trains If one of those trains in Manhattan breaks down, there would be no way to get to East New York Yard (where the L train shops are) or even 207th Street or Coney Island Yards (where heavy maintenance is performed) for repairs. They are shutting down service in Manhattan because it is better than risking trains breaking down between 8th Avenue and 1st Avenue. Why can’t you embrace using a bus for 15 months between Manhattan and Brooklyn and along 14th Street?
