As a Widnes supporter this is my all time favourite game against a fantastic Canberra team who played sublime rugby for 25 minutes . Thanks for posting this Aussie view and thanks for the game and for all the gracious sporting post match comments from such classy sportsmen . Widnes did deserve the win .To a man they played out of their skins that wonderful unforgettable night .

He went on tour in 88 and was massively average . Tony Myler the finest GB stand - off in the 1980’s .

Very true. That year he invented a penalty that didn't definitively exist in the rule book at the time to steal a grand final off a team.

@ and they got a piggyback to 12-8 :) bottom line Canberra were a champion team regardless but unfortunately 89 will always have a bad taste in the mouth for me. Maybe the 2019 phantom six was karma? Who knows. I love football controversies!!

I'm a Souths fan,a referee and was living in Uk in 1989/90 so missed the 1989 GF until recently. I was gobsmacked at the call from Harrigan probably one of the worse Grand final calls I have ever seen.
