Burn Cycle theme is so good. That game alone is a reason to get the CD-i. Cool trivia, developer of the Atlantis FPS on the CD-i stated that he did everything that was theoretically possible to port Doom and Wolfenstein. He started Atlantis as an attempt to port Doom, but it proved to be impossible because there's no way he could add height to the levels. He then thought about porting Wolfenstein 3D, but the graphics (especially the swastikas) wouldn't look right. At first this engine ran at 1 fps, but then he optimized it to run at 12-15 fps. Such a talented programmer! There's no way to go beyond it on the CDi.

Hi, I worked at the company doing Discworld, I saw it and played it. Untill recently I thought it HAD been released. It did chug like a bugger, scrolling the screens was just awful ( the poor CDI couldn't seem to handle the huge backgrounds) so it might have been a quality issue that got it cancelled.

5:57 Well, I just noticed that the publisher for the game was Psynosis... & it was scheduled for release in 1995! Hmmmm..... What does that remind me of? The PS1!! Who owns the PS1 IP? Sony! Who owns Psynosis? Sony!! 😮 Yup, Sony did the same thing to the CD-I.... like what they did to the SNES, Genesis/SMD, & the 32X!!! What was that? Buyout a company, & force them to either transfer said games to the PS1.... or scrap it entirely!!!! Clearly Sony was bloodthirsty for revenge against Sega & Nintendo, & screwing over Philips was just another box on the agenda sheet!

Jenovi, just want to say that i'm a huge fan and your content is consistently high quality. It boggles my mind how your channel isn't much bigger than it is, but it'll get there and I wish you all the success in the world when it does. But until then, while there's still a good chance of you reading this comment..... please cover Burn Cycle! You ignited some major nostalgia in this video!

About the Lost Vikings, I forgot exactly where I read it but apparently Interplay hired some outsourced studio to work on that port, it was basically a remake of the first game with animated cutscenes in between. Interplay were very uncooperative with the devs and it had a lot of hardware issues like Battle Chess did. The one not mentioned here that interested me was The Crow, they didn’t get any game design done before Phillips shut it down but the planned concept art looked great

You've done it again! Great video. As a teenager I remember going into Montgomery Wards -- the only place that I ever saw a CD-i. I played it once or twice while in the store and within a few weeks the system was gone from the store and I never saw it again anywhere else. It was good to see some of the possibilities that could have been...
@Jenovi6 жыл бұрын
The real story with the CD-i is there were nearly 200 titles released for the system and of those, less than 10 were financed and published by someone other than Philips.
@vince19games6 жыл бұрын
Are you saying that Philips is the ultimate first party?
@Jenovi6 жыл бұрын
Maybe, but I also think it speaks volumes on how committed they were to making the hardware work. Without Philips, the CD-i would have almost no games. It's crazy to think that Philips paid for the development of the entire game library.

Actually the CD-i launched within the USA in December 1990, and the MSRP was $699.99, with some stores even selling the original 910 system for as much as $999.99.

Great video, however, Voyeur on CD-i is NOTHING like 3DO's Plumbers don't wear ties. Voyeur is actually a very well made FMV game that's actually very good and it uses professionally produced FMV throughout the game. Plumbers don't wear ties is a horrible piece of shit "game" that, with exception of the FMV intro, doesn't even have any Full motion video through the "game", it uses still images (rather horribly) and the "game" (if I can even call it that) is just horrible in every way.
@Jenovi6 жыл бұрын
I didn't really mean quality wise (Voyeur is kind of impressive), I was referring to notable games with adult themes. I fully understand and agree with what you're saying.

6:35 Microcosm is another Psynosis game, meaning it was best Phillips canceled it. Otherwise Sony would've anyway!😂 Think about it, why would Sony release a game for their competitor's console... the same year their own console was released overseas?! 😅 Personally I would've just let the game be released, if I were in charge of Phillips.... just to get a reaction from Sony. For that would've meant the game would be on both platforms, though the CD-I would've still be dead in the water by this point. So maybe Sony would laugh at me, for their port would sell more copies!! 🤔 But then again, I may have saved the Phillips CD-I... for my management decisions would've been different!!! My motto is = If a project of any kind is nearly done, or entirely finished... It gets released no matter what happens!!!! Only a legal issue could've stopped me then.
@htdmc20106 жыл бұрын
Apprentice 2, Dead End and the Mario games seem to be Historically interesting but i doubt them being interesting games. Out of all the Consoles released back then the CD-I is probably the worst. The CD-I was actually going to be a Nintendo Console at some point. As far as i remember after the feud between Nintendo & Sony leading them to make PlayStation a Sony Console instead of Nintendo they made a deal with Philips. For some odd reasons they didn`t wanted the CD-I but Philips did get the rights of Producing Nintendo Franchise which were awful.

Thanks god, Saturn and Psx, destroy this tendence of " hyper 16 bit " ... those consoles, were definitely bad evolution of 16 bit's : Amiga CD 32 , Atari Jaguar ... Panasonic 3DO has a bunch of good titles, but still, 85% of those games, were just crap, never understood, how they could not realise by themselves. .. the only glorious was 32X, which had a big ammount of master pieces
