I can tell why it was so expensive/cancelled...WAY overblown cast and crew. Worked on big budget, HUGE cast and crew (Superman, Superman 3...etc.). This was ridiculous, what you get when you put Spielberg on a TV show. HUNDREDS of crew standing around, and hundreds of extras...equals a huge "cost-cutting" risk when the bean-counters decide who gets the axe.

I actually composed the musical score for this show and it was an amazing experience. Every week I would also conduct a full orchestra at Fox For the show which is extremely rare for a tv show. My memory is very faulty at times, but I think that Alien Nation was something of a First Contact sort of thing where Earth meets Aliens and try to overcome their racial differences. I believe there were at least two movies. I know there was one. I think there was a sequel and then the television show that followed. I am sure there is an imdb.com for it...

The problem with Terra Nova was it didn't spend enough time building up the bigger story arc that was revealed at the last few episodes. From what I remember, it spent way too much time on the family drama problem of the week formula without balancing the bigger story to keep people thinking and talking. I lost a lot of interest mid way through the season, but stuck with it, and the last episode actually made me want more and kind of hooked me.

It’s a shame this show was cancelled, I found it streaming an binged the whole thing in a couple days. Then watched it again! It had some fantastic work by cast & crew, and was much higher quality than many other shows of the time. I’m off to rewatch it!

I do have to note that Fox, while trigger happy with cancellations, is also very lenient with producing shows to begin with. Many shows got a start on Fox, that the more traditional channels would never produce.

Also when CBS agreed to a season 2 after the Fan campaign, they gave it a short season 2, placed it in a bad time slot during the summer, during the summer all shows suffer a ratings drop. Also The time slot was at the same time as American Idol which was a ratings juggernaut at the time.

Great idea for a new series! I do remember watching a few episodes of Terra Nova but never got into enough to realise only one series was made. Based on the big budget and what the series was about, seems like it would have been better to have made the series into a few movies which could have made more money and got a much bigger audience. I have a few suggestions for other Cancelled TV shows: Odyssey 5 (I watched the whole series at the time and was hoping we'd find out what caused Earths destruction but it was just left on a cliffhanger), Jake 2.0, Tru Calling, Firefly, My Name Is Earl, Dallas (2012-2014) and Stargate Universe.

I think Terra Nova was deeply flawed. Their weapon technology meant that they were never seriously threatened by, nor needed to adapt, to the environment & the fauna. I think it would have been much more interesting if they had lost most technology, and had to contend with the dinosaurs using spears, bows & arrows, and their wits. Survival would not have been ensured, and would not have required super intelligent dinosaurs to create drama.

That might have been what did the show in: lack of overlap between the "yay dinosaurs" crowd and the "I don't understand my teenage son" crowd.

It became really good at the second season, but it was too late already. It was quite clear SyFy (jeez, that effin- name change) wanted to kill it since the middle of the second season by moving the broadcasting times. They just gave up on it. The problem is they didn't accept the first season as a "setup" to something bigger, which the next seasons would be. You can still find interviews with the creators saying some of the ideas they wanted to put into the next seasons and boy, they were awesome. People sort of weren't ready for a more serious Stargate series. However today it would work just great. Just look at the Star Trek, how it has literally just risen from it's grave. There is still great chance for reviving the whole franchise. It seems though MGM simply doesn't want to or it would have happened already.

Or if you're interested in something with a more interesting history, then Muppets Tonight (1996-1998). Also, a famous one is Invader Zim (2001-2002; 2006)

equarg I agree. I just hate it that whenever a story has a potentially cool or interesting villain, that villain would instead be replaced or outdone by a human enemy. What kind of idiot would want to hear a story about humans fighting dinosaurs anyways? I loved the show when it first premiered (still do), and like many, I was disappointed that it didn't get a second season. I *am* wanting to pick up the DVD with that motion comic. I for one would like some closure to the story.

Well, it wasn't cancelled for "unknown reasons". In short the show wasn't generating the rating numbers CBS wanted, even as it wasn't doing poorly, and it was an expensive production. The second season triggered by the audience had a final episode shot in two different ways which the network could choose to play depending on whether the show was renewed for a third season or not. It was an awesome show but it was cancelled for the same reasons as most other shows: costs and ratings.

Both Extant and UTD got decent endings, UTD could have continued as a 'Alien Chase' series but the dome was down and it had strayed so far from the book it was in name only Would love to have seen The Event continue [as well as Flash Forward, Revolution and many others] but alas, sci-fi on network TV usually self destruct: see how CBS is handling Star Trek: Discovery

The Event suffered from Horrible acting and really stupid writing at the start, it was no surprise it got canned, thats not to say i'm not interested in a what would have happened, UTD never got away from what I call the "STUPID factor", I mean my god the one lady gets shot in the leg, keeps the bandage on the OUTSIDE of her jeans and is RUNNING in a matter of DAYS, just completely lacks common sense, Flash Forward definitely deserved a second season, it was FAR superior to UTD or The Event

Shows like Terra Nova, Flash Forward, Jericho, etc. are why I'm hesitant to invest my time in a new franchise. Once I see that the network is willing to commit three or four seasons, then maybe I'll binge watch it on Netflix. But if they're going to cancel it on a cliffhanger at the end of season one, it shows how little they care about the viewers who did give their show a chance.

fox is notorious for this though. this isn't the first absolutely great show they've canned after one season FIREFLY ANYONE? fox has this love hate thing with sci fi. they love it while it's the flavour of the month then they ditch it just as fast. it seems like fox was beting on dinosaur being the next big thing then superheros zombie and medieval fantasy shows were the in thing. yes a 4m budget was big but now thats the norm. hell stargate SGA and SGU were pushing 2-3m per episode if not more towards the end and they predated this series. i was super hyped for terranova when it came out. to me it was my next show after the void stargate left.
