A friend of mine had their leukaemia relapse and stem cell transplant didn’t work. Now with immunotherapy they are in complete remission after a year. In leukaemia immunotherapy is already such a big hope as a cure after a relapse. The research into immunotherapy for all types of cancers is really such a great advancement!
@tammyslaughter95872 жыл бұрын
Actually immunotherapy is the first and second line treatment before a SCT since it’s cheaper than a SCT and very effective. Don’t understand why they did the transplant first, then immunotherapy.unless they just have a different protocol in the UK as opposed to the US. Immunotherapy for blood cancers have been around and very effective for 20 years.
@ThatOneMom742 жыл бұрын
@@tammyslaughter9587 They didn't offer me immunotherapy at all. We asked about the CAR T-cell therapy and they don't offer it in the US to anyone over the age of 27. I got very strong rounds of chemotherapy that put me in remission and I turned down transplant because I could find nothing good about it. The hematologist told me about a medication trial that was doing well and when I asked to try it he told me no because he wanted me to wait until I relapsed and start chemo over and then try the drug. I fired him and my new hematologist let me try it. So far it's working, but I'm also doing other things besides just want the doctors have told me. I found that they are very stingy with information and just expect you to take what they are willing to give. A former oncology nurse at the hospital I used told me that the hematologists/oncologists there never look at a patient and think about what is best for them. They look at the patient and figure up how many dollar signs they are worth. She said there were so many patients who could've done alternative treatments, who could've taken chemo that wasn't as strong, or who could've done everything out patient, but those don't make as much money. I fully believe her. My bill from May 2020 to December 2020 was over a million dollars. My medicine is $47,000 a month. My trust in the medical community is at an all time low. If the cancer comes back, I have asked my family to just let me go. I honestly believe I have some form of ptsd after all of this. I don't think I would survive it again.
@tammyslaughter95872 жыл бұрын
@@ThatOneMom74 Unfortunately you were also given the wrong information that CAR T-cell therapy is only given to people who are not over the age of 27 in the U.S. This is simply not true! Other health comorbidities play a larger factor in the evaluation and eligibility and also sometimes the standard treatments of chemo and immunotherapies have to be used first in some cases but not age. According to the Moffitt Cancer Center, the Mayo Clinic, and other cancer hospitals do not use age as a factor when considering treatment. My hematologist/oncologist and I have already discussed CAR T-cell for the future and I can assure you I’m well over 27. I’m so sorry that you’ve had so many negative issues with your oncologists I know it can be frustrating at times. I’ve been very fortunate in the 8 years of dealing off and on with first stage 4 colon cancer and now stage 4 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma I can tell you out of four oncologist I’ve used over the years I only had to discontinued one, and it wasn’t because of her it was an issue with her staff. Regardless they were all good people and good physicians and I never felt as if I were nothing but dollar signs to any of them. I guess that can be any individuals perception, I just choose not to have that type of perception. I never felt that my oncologist were stingy with information I just realize that cancer especially hematology malignancies are very complex and complicated and they just can’t sit there and bombard me with all the information about hematology that’s why I do my part and do extensive research about my disease to know what type of questions I needed to ask at that point of treatment. We do discuss many different aspects and options for treatments and he has let me decide whether I wanted to use chemo or not along with my immunotherapy treatment which did work well at the time. Personally I don’t know what type of alternative treatments the former nurse was talking about that could have been used on hematology malignancies instead of chemo immunotherapy perhaps she should share it with the world. If you want to try different medical trials there are different organizations such as Trialjectory, or Mass Bio who can help you find suitable and eligible clinical trials for your type of blood cancer you don’t need your oncologist referral. I won’t even get into how much it cost my family to deal with two stage 4 cancers including multiple high risk surgeries including having half my liver removed and ileostomy bags placed then removed etc. and now treatments for lymphoma but you just can’t put a price tag on life. My whole family wants me here and I love everyday of life even though some days can be tough. I just choose not to live full time in the rabbit hole of depression and despair, even though sometimes it is necessary to feel and embrace the sadness and medical PTSD that these terrible diseases inflict on people, it just does no good to live in that negative space for too long. I do understand how sometimes our illnesses can feel like we are adding such a burden to our families but we just can’t give up and give in to the dark side of this illness. Please do what you can to hang in there and know you are loved and appreciated and life is so worth the trouble it may bring from time to time. I wish you the best, and I hope you find peace and health. ❤️
@ThatOneMom742 жыл бұрын
@@tammyslaughter9587 Thank you. I've definitely done a lot of research. I've talked to so many cancer survivors and read so much information that sometimes I just have to walk away from it. My first hematologist gave me anxiety to the point that I had to take medication just to go to my appointments. It was his nurse practitioner that suggested I switch to someone else, because she didn't think he was treating me very well. He was the one who told me that the CAR-T was only available for certain age groups. My current hematologist is a much better fit for me. I'm actually his only leukemia patient, as lymphoma is his specialty. He's been much more honest about things and he's much more willing to try things other than just Hyper CVAD and transplant, so I have to appreciate that about him. It didn't help that I was diagnosed at the start of the pandemic and confined to a single hospital room for 28 days. I am a very family oriented person and definitely not used to be isolating myself like that. My husband finally got to come stay with me, but I still wasn't allowed to leave the room or have other visitors. I know there are good doctors out there, unfortunately, my initial experience was not conducive to trust or a good relationship. I'm working on doing other things to be healthier and continuing looking for information in case I'm ever out of remission again. One thing I learned is that one of the side effects of chemo and the medication I take now is other kinds of cancer, as well as leukemia. I'm working to keep that from happening. I wish you the best and pray that we both get to move on without worry of these horrible diseases again!

@@Thor.Jorgensen I know this was not invented in a church and i know to give credit to scientists, and the word miracle doesn't necesarely need to be a religious expression. You should probably stop assuming things of what people think
@Thor.Jorgensen2 жыл бұрын
@@_sam29 You ignored the question so I will repeat it: What does "Times of redemption are here!" mean? But since I love assuming, I'm going to assume that you're not going to answer it, so I'll answer it for you. "Times of redemption are here!" is a reference to the religious Christian idea that we have all inherited the sin of our ancestors, all the way back to Adam and Eve, with their sin being the reason why we suffer death in the first place. If Adam and Eve had not eaten the forbidden fruit, there would have been no death. Christianity preaches that we need Jesus to redeem us of all of our accumulated sins. Because if we don't, we'll suffer the worst imaginable torment for all eternity. So that implies that God is rewarding us by giving us cures for cancer, not the scientists. It's a divine gift, a miracle, not anything we can give scientists credit for. That is what it implies.

Watching this broke me a little. My mom just passed away 2 years ago from colorectal cancer that metastized everywhere. She went through every treatment she could, including an experimental immunotherapy through M.D. Anderson. Everything was ineffective. If only she had lived a couple years longer, or the cancer had happened a little later.... she might have been cured by this treatment. She suffered so much, and she was so strong and optimistic through all of it. She deserved better. I hope that with this immunotherapy, no one else has to go through what she and I went through. It breaks a person. I know will always carry the memories of that misery within me. No one should have to watch their loved one slowly wither away and die in agony, all while being helpless to stop it. And no one should have to die like that, robbed of their chance for a future and left writhing and crying out for their mother on their deathbed.

I’m terribly sorry for your trauma and loss of your mom! It is a terrible disease, this type of immunotherapy was studied on people without metastatic colorectal cancer it may not have helped her anyway, and it has to be a certain mutation to work as well. Immunotherapy has been around for over 20 years for blood cancers and more and more different immunotherapies come out all the time. Hopefully more successful studies with immunotherapy and CAR-T cell therapy will help cure many people. My dad benefited from immunotherapy for his stage 4 lung cancer. He was diagnosed in 2017 and still alive in 2022. Since over a year he only has chemo therapy as a treatment as the scans didn't show any cancer anymore. Stopping with immune therapy was difficult but the immunotherapy was quite tough with the severe side effects he got from it. So far so good with a milder therapy, but all the years going to the hospital is taking its toll too. I hope he lives for many more years. Quitting is not an option (yet), the risk it will come back quickly is apparent. When it comes back there is probably no way of stopping it again.

I have had immunotherapy for a melanoma that had spread to the rest of my body. I had 7 or 8 small tumors in different parts of my body. The therapy removed all of them. I had very little side effects, some muscle aches and a light skin rash that was gone with a few weeks. It also wrecked my thyroid, so i will have to take a pill with hormones every day for the rest of my life, but that is a small price to pay. i was told the immunotherapy worked only in 25% of the patients, but for me it was a miracle cure. I hope medicines like this will not be so expensive that it will not be available for everyone.

@@stacybailey8961 The first medicine i had was Nivolumab. That did a little, but not enough, Then i got Ipilimumab (who invent those names?) I had it in jan. 2019. Scans showed all tumors shrinking, some are gone completly. As i understand it, some of the larger tumors will leave scar tissue, so they will always show up on a scan. That is why the doctor never can give me the all clear, but as long as it does not grow i am good. But even if it does come back patients have reacted very good on a repeat of the treatment. It really is a miracle cure compared to radiaton or chemo therapy. Good luck.

My ex husband worked for a pharmaceutical company. His job was to fly around the country and sometimes the world, and when scientists found a drug or a breakthrough for Alzheimer's / Dementia (as this was his department, others had to look for cancer, autoimmune diseases etc). He then offered the scientists enough money until they couldn't say anything but yes, to buy that drug off them. The pharmaceutical company then took that drug, put it into a safe and never released it. Same with the cancer drugs. There is a lot more money to keep someone sick, and for them to have to buy insulin every month, or have cancer and need to buy rounds and rounds of chemotherapy, then to cure them. "A patient cured, is a customer lost" . These companies are not there to help you, they are there to make huge amounts of money for themselves.

If they go around finding cures, there are hospitals and doctors and pharmaceutical companies that will go out of business. I've seen and learned too much in the last two years to even be hopeful that the medical/pharmaceutical industry want anything more than to get you well enough to go home, but keep you sick enough to come back.
