My Momma didn't survive breast cancer, but I love seeing the survivors. It makes me feel that my Momma lives in these women. We are all beautiful with or without breasts.

I did not get reconstruction with my preventive double mastectomy. Thankfully, my surgeon went over all available options very thoroughly (which I know is not always the case), and she went into detail about what to expect if I did get implants: the spacers, the injections, the surgery, the way the implants would feel, the potential for additional surgery, and also risk of my body’s rejection of the implants. I decided to do a flat closure, and I’ve been happy about my decision. I find lots of freedom with it as well.

I just has a double mastectomy about two weeks ago, at age 59. It was not suggested to me to get implants, which I would have turned down anyway. Once I found out I had breast cancer, I told the surgeon I was open to a double as a precaution. At first he said it's rare, in spite of what I may have heard. A month later they found a cancer on the other side and again I said I wanted a double. This time they listened. As I explained to everyone, I found my breasts to be nothing more then a useless bother, causing pain, drawing unwanted attention and making many clothes I liked something I couldn't fit properly or at all...not to mention feeling 20 lbs lighter. If I really want an hour glass figure after this surgery, I'm a crafter and sew, I can make something to wear under my clothes for shape.

I was diagnosed and with further testing (MRI) they found LCIS in the other breast. I already wanted both gone (i hope to never go through chemo again!!) but it was still kind of a shock to have two different breast cancers going on at the same time. For me, it was like my body betraying me.

So I have short hair and don't wear girly clothes often I went to a concert recently and ate in the train station before I was about to go I went to the bathroom and a little child yelled at me saying I couldn't be there and the mom did nothing. I ignored it and went to a stall to pee and I still herd the boy screening saying " there's a boy in the bathroom mom take him out" and I wasn't mad at what he was saying but more at him trying to call me out while I was taking a piss and the mom not even trying to quit him

Hearing this has made me feel so happy that I didn't listen to everyone telling me that I had to have reconstruction after my double mastectomy for breast cancer. I am only 10 days out from surgery but it's nice to hear that I'm not only in my choice to go flat.

Here I am 10 days out! I'm flat right now, maybe reconstruction in the future...who knows. Reconstruction at time of surgery wasn't an option. I thought I'd be totally traumatized when I saw myself breastless, but I'm ok with it! Hope you are continuing to do well

I also have this genetic disorder. Had breast cancer. Had both breast removed as well as total hysterectomy. I did choose to have breast reconstruction. I don't necessarily feel feminine but I feel that it evens out my body which is very curvaceous. I made this choice to maintain my own sense of aesthetics. I am in my 60s.

Had double mastectomy and flap reconstruction due to BRCA2 + status January 29 of this year. I didn't want implants. I've been off work for the duration due to open wounds on the undersides of my new breasts. I dug the fact that I'd get a tummy tuck out of it at the same time but the recovery has been intense. My advice to women facing this is do what works for you. And know it takes time to recover. Not necessarily 6 weeks like they told me initially. I'm proud I'm a previvor and encourage others to fight dirty with cancer like I did but know it's a journey.

I had a double mastectomy without reconstruction (which I saw as the surgeon wanting a bigger paycheck without any regard whatsoever for ME, both as a psychological person as well as the endless 'revisions' and 'removals' that often result). The insurance paid $100,000 for the double mastectomies, I wonder what she would have gotten for the plastic surgery because 'the insurance will pay for it'. Yeegawds. I'm concave, I wear clothes that hide it, no one seems to notice or care, no one would ever mistake me for a male because I'm very petite and wear my hair long. This woman is being mistaken for male because of the clothes and hairstyle. If it's a problem grow your hair out longer. It's not a big deal.

Because there are trans gender people in the world my mother tends to ask me when she sees a person with short hair and looking a little femine if they are female or male. She does this because they dont have boobs. It offends me to think if i didnt get lucky with my boobs would she be able to tell if im female or not. What society has become today is sad. You are a beautiful woman

I don't know if she had short hair when she got told "I'll be with you soon sir", but her hair right now look kind of like the hair of a gay guy I met during my under grad days. If she had had on a dress or skirt or been wearing some pants that showed her feminine shaped hips, perhaps that mistake of calling her sir would not have been made. Or perhaps the guy had very bad eyes and was not wearing his glasses right at that moment. All that said, I don't know what she was wearing or what the guy who made the mistake could see so I can only speculate as to what happened that day to cause the mistake.
