Nailed it Candace. He wasn’t defending her honor. He was trying to avoid the wrath and win the approval of a woman who never really respected him in the first place. The fact he never left her shows his own lack of self respect. Definitely sad.

What bothers me most is that when he smacked Chris, he was walking with a smirked smile in his face and later celebrating like if what he did was right. It was wrong. Chris handled with professionalism. What Will did was just out of place. You do not go smacking people only because you want to show off to your wife that you "care". That is an assault. He laughed at that joke. It was only when he saw his wife rolling her eyes and showing a discontented face that he react like that. He has been humiliated by her and he wanted his dignity as man back. It is sad that this action overshadowed the achievements of many other nominees who worked hard to be there.

I wouldnt say its a mild joke to make fun out of someone who suffers at least psychological from a autoimmun-desease resulting in damaging the most vulnerable part of an actress of Hollywood: her optical appearance. But on every other point i agree with you. Its strange that he got standing ovations after that rude violence against Chris Rock. And its more than cringe that Will Smith refused to leave , when the security told him so. And to put a cherry on the cake: its disgusting that Will Smith danced and shaked in the aftershow-party (making all his tears and wannabe-big-speach meaningless). If i were Will Smith, and i was allowed to stay there after that bad behavior, i would be the most silent man on that night, and right after the oscar i would drive home. But not staying to the aftershow-party, and shaking and dancing and rapping, like nothing happened. That what makes every apology of him surreal and not believable ... even the apologies days after. I even see his movies now in a total different light.. the movies, where he wants to be the strong man or/and the cool hero (bad boys , i am legend, Men in black, I robot, Hancock, Seven pounds, Mohammed Ali )... It gives a cringe light on that. Sad. Jada showed the world how weak he really is. He should break up with her, and use those insights in his true self, to make a better person out of himself.

Bingo, to me that's the real story of the clearly deranged and unwell Smiths. This is an obscenely priveleged family, who've been given unimaginable wealth for one simple reason: at one time, hundreds of millions of people of all races and walks of life liked them. And in return, they see themselves as victims, and the world around them as unfair and oppressive???

Bullshit, this story is a lie wrapped in a half truth. The WHOLE truth is that Will Smith CHEATED on his first wife with Jada and then decided to marry the woman he committed adultery with. Man it's incredible to me how well Chris Rock took that entire experience. Here he could have been selfish and retaliated, causing this huge show to spiral extremely out of control in the heat of the moment, all while putting the final blow in there by doing something that would have removed him as the host for the rest of the event. He didn't do this though, he stuck to his job, stayed composed during a truly hard time, in the most pinnacle of all heated moments, and handled it incredibly professionally during a time where it was truly needed. I have to give so much respect to that sort of self restraint. Instead of being extremely selfish like Will Smith during the biggest award event on our planet, he decided to try and save it all in the heat of the moment. I give my upmost respect to him.

People who are defending Will are giving license for anyone at a comedy club to storm the stage if a comedian says something they find offensive. Just when I thought our culture couldn't sink any lower, we have people cheering a guy who publicly assaults someone for doing their job. The real man at the Oscars was Chris Rock who stood calmly with his hands at his side, absorbed Will's slap on live TV, and then went about his business. That's manhood.

The whole idea of a marriage is you've finally found the one person that is your best friend and the only person you need for the rest of your life... or that you can tolerate (lol)! Leaving out divorce for the point I'm trying to make of course and I know sometimes ish just don't work out... in spirit, that's what marriage is supposed to mean. Are they really trying to make accidental pregnancy and possible abortion normal or communicable diseases normal, because that's part of what makes open relationships disgusting! For twenty some years now I have been blessed with a beautiful and wonderful partner. Early on in our relationship, she started to get into a confrontation with a gentleman that didn't need to, or have to occur.(Of note here is that it was and is atypical behaviour for her) Thankfully, the incident ended before it became physical. A little while later, after she had calmed down, we were talking about the incident when I said the following, "Please do not issue cheques that I have to cash". It was a metaphorical statement that got her to open her mind up and ask, "What do you mean?". With that question I was able to explain to her that if she got into a confrontation with a man and it got physical I would have to protector her; that it would be me in the fight not her. She went silent as she mulled over my comments. After a few minutes she came to the conclusion that my physical safety was far more important to her than any insult from any stranger. She has never put me in that situation again. While the above incident may indicate to I agree with you I don't. While it was done diplomatically with the statement, "Please do not issue cheques that I have to cash" it was still a confrontational, yet very peaceful, coversation with my partner on how her actions affected me. It was a needed conversation that set certain ground rules about expetations in our relationship. And while it went extremely well, it could have gone the opposite direction at which I would have ended the relationship. In short, our core values can never be taken from us. We either have the strength to maintain our core values and walk away from those who would expect us to change, or we give up our core values for something else. Will Smith is a man and as such is resposible for Will Simith's actions regardless who may have influence with him.

100% agree with this take. Been saying similar to my friends. Will is dealing with trauma and is a victim of abuse tbf. His manhood has been surgically and systematically broken down by his master manipulator of a wife. Fear based decision making is NOT the one people!

Sad , his mistake is that he put his wife on pedistal. He can’t free himself from “handcuffs “(love) she put on him, she is ruthless. Have to be sorry for him. Being on the top of the world and in prison.

He consented to being a cuckold and embarrassed stripped himself of all masculinity. Then, b/c he is no longer a man, he decided to take out his anger on a real man, Chris Rock.

Will Smith is becoming unhinged because he can’t deal with his wife’s idea of a marriage.

Thats exactly what it is I think. Regina Hall made a direct joke about their open marriage before Chris came on, but Will cant smack a woman, so all kinds of bottled up emotions and anger about the humiliations his wife put him through, unloaded about a really mild bald joke on Chris. He maybe thought he can win jadas respect back or something.

This is what happens when one loves another MORE than the other gives in love. I had no idea this was the ugly truth about their relationship. Now I can go back to having some feeling for Will Smith again. Because what he did was inexcusably very bad behavior. Jada has made her husband's devoted love actions for her happiness, and at the same time makes her own happiness all for her too. Narcissistic, and emotionally abusive. 🤨👎

I NEVER agree with Candace... EVER. THIS time, she is actually on point. Will should have left Jada's a$$ a long time ago. Kudos to Candace for calling this exactly as it is. I say this as a person who is a fan of both Will AND Chris Rock.
