That was Fabi's game to win. Nepo didn't deserve a draw. This rules are plain dumb and the whole candidates format. I don't know why Magnus is pushing for less time and faster games when the best quality of chess is in thinking and more time. Chess hasn't been solved like people say. Fabi would've won that game with more time to think. In the past you would see games postponed till the next day, today we force someone to draw a winning game with dumb time control.

@@MrIvanUp Do you really think luck is the only thing that made him be able to not lose a single game against these incredible players? Let alone lead the candidates nearly every single time? No it's just that the only wins he allows his opponents to get are extremely hard to find, and he never allows them to transform it in a confortable advantage. So the accuracy at which he forces his opponents to play is ridiculous and obviously this will mean that the clock would play a huge role. Of course he would lose against stockfish, who wouldn't? but every time Fabi was able to play 10 stockfish moves and get an advantage, only one inaccuracy and it was over.

@talionthenazgul3213 8 ай бұрын
True but thats typically easy when assisted by the engine as for their commentating it wasnt the best nor the worst I mean we have seen way worse commentating but they kinda missread the players in many occasions for example when fabi first blundered and the bar went at 0.5 for white they all where like "With this move Ian finally has the draw he wants" which was truly idiotic and missleading not to say dissrespectful to the player cuz Ian never wanted a draw a draw meant that he was out of the tournament for good he was all in and he proved that in many positions where he didnt follow the draw line but the risky one and the worst part about this was that they said this kinda stuff about Ian many times wich was really hard to listen to. 2nd example On the game of Hikaru and Gukesh after the 40th move where it was up to Hikaru wither to go for a draw or continue the game they started saying stuff like "and Hikaru here will propably draw because lets be real what else is in this position other than a draw" which again was truly stupid thing to say even a 900 elo player could tell that the position still had a future players like Magnus Kasparov Bobby Topalov and many others have many times pushed far more drawable positions for win and they have won Hikaru in the end indeed went for the draw but as a comentator and as a GM/IM u cant say "the position here is a draw" while u got a a bunch of pieces in the game and a bunch of pawns of which one was a square away from promoting. 3rd example at one point they found an engine line on Fabis position which led to a draw if i remember correctly then after the move was made one of them asked the others "yeah but why did we declare this a draw I cant see it" What happened then is them awkawardly trying to pass the ball to eachother to answer why the line was a draw till the engine could show them cuz they were just unable which led to the whole chat laughing at them 4th and final example when Magnus joined the call and without any engine help he really presented some intresting lines which they had completely missed making them seem like the kind of idiots they are

The Fabi-Nepo game was actually *extremely* instructional. The idea of avoiding the perpetual by the black queen and knight when your backrank is defended and your king is behind two diagonal pawns in the corner. You move your king in what seems like a counterintuitive way because black runs out of checks and gives you the move. You make your move, and then they can repeat giving checks again, starting with a discovery, but they run out of checks because eventually the knight blocks the queen. Rinse and repeat. There's no perpetual, and you continue to make progress. Edit: For this to work, you need to avoid a simple perpetual by the knight by protecting the d2 square, which is why Fabi had to play Rd1 instead of Rc7.

fabi had so many winning positions to convert. A greatest draw would mean both players thinking of brilliant strategy to outwit each other. Ian didn't do that, Fabi kept letting him of the hook. Fabi will take some time once he analyses his game to see how close he was on so many moves to win. Also Ding is probably the easiest person to dethrone in the history of the game. and fabi is better than gukesh in faster time format. so most likely favorite to win. the younger players are coming through. Brilliant from Gukesh, but Ian is truly invincible in he candidates - if hed only beaten Abasov we'd be looking at a tiebreak Edit: this reinforces the point Magnus makes, in chess you can only win if your opponent let's you - Hikaru had 7 decisive games, that means he made decisive mistakes as did his opponents, Gukesh made very few mistakes but his opponents played worse against him than against Ian (and Vidit was on fire against Hikaru but subpar against Ian) so it's easy for the best player not to win
