Although, there weren't sets or costumes, it had been a fabulous 'concertante' performance with a Iot of 'on stage' motion & expression. It's amazing, how June Anderson, a very experienced and successful opera singer, pays attention continuously to every KS/Chr. Ludwig's gesture or movement. L. Bernstein also, moved his hand characteristically, emphasizing on the phrase, "me muero, me cae una hernia". 'Candide' was, undoubtedly, one of the 2 lyrical cornerstones of the versatile maestro, along with the the revised 'West Side story', a few years earlier (1985-86).

When this was taped a virulent flu was decimating member of the cast and on the tape of the complete performance Bernstein makes reference to it. There is an earlier performance of Ludwig singing this--the birthday fete at Tanglewood and she is in better voice. Also the entire show is vastly entertaining and Bernstein enjoyed all of itl

Finally! Since I first heard this in 1961, I have been trying to figure out the French. Je ne sais quoi. It is impossible to understand in the original cast recording. Unless Archipova sang something else.... So many of the great original lyrics have been changed and not necessarily for the better.

I was at these concerts at the Barbican, December 13 & 14, 1989. There were cast changes for the second concert due to a flu epidemic. Thankfully both Christa Ludwig and Nicolai Gedda were unaffected, and I was able to meet them both after the second concert. Lenny did a signing session at Tower Records, Piccadilly Circus the next day, and I travelled down again to meet him. Special times. Lenny was ill too, and I'm sure that bout of flu contributed to his decline in health that led to his death the following year.

She's not singing in french. The Chorus sing spanish then she replies in Russian and German then finishes in French. Easily assimilated.

The refrain is in Spanish and she also sings some small phrases in French and in German at 01:50. The only Russian word used is "da da" (well, not counting "Rovno Gubernya" which is a reference to a city in Ukraine).

Bernstein is dead in 1990. So this can't be 1997. But yes, she is amazing.
