Special thanks again to the G.O.A.T. Tom Olszta himself for providing the tape of this show that originally aired on 7/24/1993. (Again I apologize about the grainy footage, and a couple of small parts of this match get cut off during the first string.) This was the debut match for Chuck Vozzella on Channel 5, having to take on Tom Olszta after Tom had defeated Mike Morgan with his big 446 triple the week before to get into first place for that year's Championship show.
This was a very fast paced match, as both bowlers were really firing each ball down the lane, and there were also some pretty exciting moments throughout the show too, especially in the 2nd game.
In case you're wondering, the next match following this one can be seen here that was posted by Alley Chat: • Alley Chat Classics - ...
Hope you all enjoy, R.I.P. Don Gillis.

I remember watching Chuck V bowling on Bob Fouracre's WSMW Ch 27,earlier /mid 1970s. One of the tallest bowlers you'll see. Amazing Tom gets a 20 box in the final frame to get q 402 triple

Tommy says it's very hard to get on the show. Sure it was, but he always made it seem VERY easy.

According to the "Worcester Telegram" article entitled "20 years after loss of TV show, candlepin bowling goes online to reach younger generations", qualifying for the "Candlepin Bowling with Don Gillis" show was very difficult. In fact, Bowlers have to pay a high entry fee and Bowl five strings in an attempt to qualify. Top Bowler for that week earns a right to challenge the defending champion. Proceeds from these entry fees were used to cover the cost of broadcasting the show, and pay the basic prize money of $700 for the winner and $300 for the loser, winner or string bonus money, three consecutive marks bonus money. What you might not know is the "Candlepin Bowling with Don Gillis" matches were not aired live. These shows are actually taped on Tuesday mornings for the Saturday broadcast, which explained why a majority of the spectators were seniors. Using a wrong target audience and not airing the matches live hurt Candlepin Bowling in the end.

When Don is describing that utterly improbable spare in the first string, you can hear someone in the peanut gallery quip "Never in doubt!" Let none say that New Englanders don't have a wicked good sense of humor.

Those in the Maritime Provinces in Canada probably have New Englanders beat...our sense of humour is off the wall insane. We'll say ANYTHING we cook up! XD

@@SimuLord I prefer the format used by ATV in Halifax from 1986-1993....4 bowlers a week, Top 2 move on. I think WNDS had that too. X-)

I'm wondering if Don Gillis is wearing a Nova Scotia tartan tie. Since my home town is Halifax, I noticed that the tartan is similar to Nova Scotia's.
