The reason the Austro-Hungarians wanted to make deals with Romania for fuel was because Romania was largest producer of oil in continental Europe at the time and was a prized possession throughout both World Wars because of it.

As a part of the Russian forces in Dobruja there was a Serbian Volunteers Division. These were Serbians from Austria-Hungary that deserted from the A-H army and defected to the Russians. They were given Russian uniforms and equipment but since they were allready trained to use Mannlichers and Schwarzlöse MGs, they were given captured Austrian weapons. So, in short, Serbian deserters from the A-H army fighting in Russian uniforms, with Austrian weapons, in Romania.

In the 80s, in full communism in Romania, I was a child. Then I first heard about this weapon. In the years after WW2, it was still used, in small quantities, for equipping the civil guard of factories. If I am not mistaken, the Romanians did not pronounce the name of this weapon correctly. They called it "Malincher". We Romanians tend to simplify the overcomplicated foreign names.

Hello Othais and Mae! I'm Alex, the guy who helped The Great War with their episodes on Romania. I must say I'm insanely jealous of you right now for having gotten to fire this rifle. Being a native Romanian who is also an active reenactor I got to handle it a few times, but I've never shot it, not only because my country has incredibly restrictive firearm laws, but also because ammunition is nigh impossible to get. I'm really impressed that you managed to find an M1892 and that it was in such a great condition, so kudos to John for lending it to you. I personally know of only one other M92, in the collection of the Military Museum of Bucharest. Also, I'm glad you think my country made the right choice with the M93 - like I said, I never got to fire it, but I've shot some of it's direct competitors and I loved the M98, liked the Mosin 1891 and absolutely hated the Mannlicher M.95 (although, truth be told, most times I was shooting 1938-43 surplus ammunition out of Bulgarian or Hungarian rifles which saw action in both wars, so they were "a bit" worn by this time), the Lebel 1886 and the Berthier 1907 for reasons you know very well. The one rifle I never even held in my hand but would really like to try is the SMLE, but we never used them around this neck of the woods. Oddly enough, one unexpected rifle which we did use and which I've handled (not shot though) is the Type 38 Arisaka in 6.5X50SR, because just before the start of the Second World War we were so strapped for guns and ammunition we bought some 20,000 from Japan (we were allies after all) - unfortunately, with only about 500 rounds of ammunition per gun, so utterly useless for anything but rear echelon duties. Oh, and some interesting things about the 6.5X53 R - I collect inert ammunition (collecting live ammo is prohibited) and over the years I have found a few oddities - for example, I have in my collection an exploded 6.5X53R case made by Keller & Co in 1898 found on a battlefield in the Carpathians and quite a large number of fired 6.5mm bullets that have intact noses but squashed tails, meaning that those particular bullets presumably hit flesh and started tumbling (other bullets which deform weirdly are the solid brass 8×50R Lebel "Balle D", of which I've also found a copious amount on Romanian WW1 battlefields). Finally, a rather unique piece, an unfinished 6.5X53R case marked PAI 1915 completely full of molten lead. It was found during a dig at the site of the old Pirotehnia Armatei; the plant itself was moved to Moldova prior to the Fall of Bucharest and all the stocks of unfinished ammunition were put to the torch - interestingly, the same dig yielded an intact, unfired 11,43mm cartridge from the 1879 Romanian Henry Martini, also marked 1915, so we know ammunition production for them kept up during the early part of the war, which is surprising, to say the least. Ah, and another semi-related anecdote - I was walking with my brother in the Trench of the Alba Carolina Vauban fort in Alba Iulia, Transylvania, when he spotted a cartridge case just lying there, on the ground - it was an 8X52R black powder cartridge from the Mannlicher M.88 made by Cornides and marked 1891, something I have never actually found before or since. The 1891 date really threw me for a loop, because I assumed they had switched production by that date to the 8X50R M.1890 "scharfe Patrone", so for the longest time I thought it was actually a 7.62X54R (the case dimensions are so similar it's actually hard to tell them apart when placed near each other) from an Austrian contract I've never heard about (earliest I know of is 1904, during the Russian Japanese war, and the headstamps are different from the standard Austrian pattern). But enough of my rambling. GG on the video and I can't wait to see the next one!

I'm glad you enjoyed it! We've actually handled a pair of the Romanian Martini's but have not found one to fire just yet. If we can we'll roll it into the overall role of the Martini in WWI as a single episode. You're not missing all that much on the SMLE.

The Martini is actually one of my favourite firearms ever. I've shot original M.1879s and the action is absolutely superb even after all these years. Another black powder rifle I thoroughly enjoy is the M.1867 Russian Krnka in 15.24x40mmR (we used that one for territorial troops in the 1877 Russian-Turkish war, while the main rifle was the M.1868 Peabody martini) which also has a very crisp action. Sadly, it's replacement in Russian service, the M.1870 Berdan II (10.75×58 mmR) is nothing to write home about - it has a really weak extractor, so most often than not you're trying to pull out jammed brass out of the chamber. The only weapon I hate more is the Degtyaryov DP28 machine gun with it's cumbersome pan magazines because not only are they heavy and slow to load, but the feed lips get easily deformed causing the cartridge to fall at the wrong angle and get jammed halfway out of the ejection port rather than being fed into the chamber. The only way to clear that is to take the magazine out, work the bolt a few times and put it back on, by which time not only you've lost time, but also a few rounds have fallen out of the magazine - and with only 46 of them in there to begin with, that's really not a good thing.

I am still using one of these (almost). It is a Dutch Mannlicher carbine - KNIL (Koninklijk Nederlands Indisch Leger, Royal Dutch East Indies Army) model, probably a WW2 bringback, made at the Hembrug arsenal. Admittedly it's been rebarrelled in 303-25, but it's basically the same action, I believe. It is a sweet little carbine for shooting goats in the mountains; I could carry it all day long, and it's accurate too!

OEWG also provided two Trials Rifles in 1890, one with Rimless cartridge, and the second one with a Rimmed Case. Italy adopted the Rimless Version with Mannlicher's Clip ( 6 rounds), and a Mauser solid bolt with Carcano's Safety. Italy paid OEWG Charger Licence fees. OEWG then used the Rimmed 6,5 cartridge from Italian Trials.and This became the 6,5x53R for the Md 1892 first Romanian Pattern ( ejector blade in Bottom of receiver) The Md1893 Bolt used the Sliding Ejector on the bolt, and lost the receiver located ejector blade. I have a Md1892 Action, but with Md1893 Bolt, and the Md1892 Mag/TG. Built by Pape of Newcastle ( clean Barreled Actions through Belgian OEWG Agent. Mine is marked Md1892, but Steyr 1893 ( manufacturing date). Also has Rom. Phoenix Acceptance stamp. Others, a comparison of Portuguese Romo. 93s( Mo.896) show features of the 1892. Still a confusing set up...does your Md1892 have the Sliding Ejector, or the supposed Receiver Blade Ejector? And have you examined the Portuguese contract Mo.896 guns? The Dutch M95s, of course, have the Sliding Ejector, and the Flat sided mag/TG. Check Marten and DeVries book one the M95 Netherlands Mannlichers. I don't have any Romo Md1892 or 93, except for my British Sporting Rifle. Regards, DocAV Australia.

Pretty cool to see the difference between the Mannlicher 95 straight pull and the usual turn bolt. I happen to have a Hungarian and Dutch M95 straight bolt carbines in 8x56R with the same enbloc clip. Of course he top of the receivers are stamped with a big S for the bigger round. Both have the stacking rod.

Oh I am spoiled because I get to shoot everything that comes our way; I just can't move for long periods of time while shooting them. I've learned it takes about 1 full hour in my shooting stance of no movement for my feet to go numb.

Wow that collection of rifles was impressive. I feel special we got to see such rare guns this episode, it makes me proud to be a patron of C&Rsenal. Those rifles were absolutely gorgeous. I know you just posted this episode and it was great seeing such rare rifles but you mentioned next episode and I'm really excited for that one because your poster listed it as one of the most advanced rifles of the war so I've been looking forward to the episode explaining that. You guys hit it out of the park with this episode though, bravo.

The extra effort is appreciated. I'm no expert on these rifles but this is the most comprehensive source of information about these rifles I know of. It's impressive. By the way, you said the Portuguese 1896 short rifle might be the easiest one of them to find but if there were only 4,000 of the made how would that be? Did the Portuguese just keep more in storage than the Romanians?

Most of the 4,000 went into surplus I suppose vs. almost none of the Romanians surviving.
