@@marywall6114 Hopefully I'm not too late, but put it in direct sunlight and water only once the soil is completely dry (2-3x/month). They DO NOT like a lot of water. I killed my first yucca by overwatering it. Yucca's are very forgiving but they need lots of time to recoup. It takes a lot of energy to maintain their image lols. Be patient & good luck!

I have to say that this winter my cane yucca stand outside for 4 consecutive days with temperature reaching down to -5c at night to 0c at day here in North Greece. It was snowing for a hole day and then the frost came! Not even a leaf has been damaged and I am really impressed on the grounds that this was selling as a "houseplant only" plant! I have grown it outside since 2 years now and it is doing great in a pot! I can't wait to transplanting it this march into a bigger pot.

I love this plant. I live in Louisiana and they’re common here. I had one at my old house and it was probably 20 feet tall. Very hardy too. Mine would take occasional frost no problem. I live in zone 9a, but we sometimes dip in the high teens every few years. They would burn at this temp, but survived. In northern Louisiana (8a/b) I’ve seen mature plants killed to the ground at 13 degrees, but they’d come back in spring from the roots.

oh they are very root hardy! I planted one in my garden when I was a kid and it would die back and return each spring here in zone 6... but was near a brick wall and the asphalt driveway.

My yucca is struggling. I see a lot of gnats on the yellow sticky trap. I got it 3 months ago and the leaves are turning yellow and brown. Some are spotted and most have a powdery white thing on them. It has 3 stalks and the smallest one has only about 7 leaves while the tallest stalks inside leaves are all dying turning brown.

Really nice yucca. I actually purchased one very similar, it's about 5'5 ft tall,it also has 2 canes, one very thick like yours. Purchased about 3 weeks ago, I haven't watered it, I noticed some yellowing leaves near the bottom. I was wondering if I should check to see if its root bound when I water it this weekend for the first time. I am a bit heavy handed with the water, so I deided to wait and let this one get really dry. I believe it had just been watered when I purchased it. It is currently in about a 3-5 gallon pot, I have a really big pot, may double that size, I want to repot it into, It is ok to repot these plants in a really big pot, or do the roots like to be somewhat crowded?
@TropicalPlantParty
@TropicalPlantParty 6 жыл бұрын
Hello Theresa! Yuccas grow well when their roots are somewhat confined, but if you notice that when you water the soil is being wetted ( water just runs right through the pot ) then it might be ready for a repotting. Also look to see if there are a lot of roots on the surface where there should be soil, that is another indication of being overly pot bound. The yellowing is likely just from some thirst if the plant has been dry for more than a week. In general with most plants, yuccas included, just bumping up the pot size about 2 inches on the outer diameter is sufficient. With these yuccas specifically you would probably be alright to move it into your large pot but it might be a good idea to wait until late spring or early summer when the plants are in active growth and will respond to a repotting better. If you are apprehensive to make the big move in the pot size you can always set the entire plant with the nursery pot into the center of your larger pot (assuming it fits) and fill in around with soil and plant succulents around the base or just fill the gap with stones or water bottles, lol, anything that will keep it stable if stability is even an issue.

I bought a tiny one several years ago, now it's almost as tall as I am. Sadly, after I moved I thought it tolerates lower light since it wasn't in the brightest spot in my old place, and I have lost a lot of leaves which is really sad. It looked so awesome before, I had like a yard of foliage growth, maybe more. I am contemplating cutting it back and starting over, but where to put the other propegated parts? You must have filmed this a while back, I notice the Hydrangeas are still lush with blooms and the sweet potato vines are still in the palm pots. 🙂 But talking about fertilizing, what fertilizer(s) do you use? I started using the Espoma brand organic fertilizers this year. Not because I care about organic or synthetic, but the rose formula was recommended to me by a rose grower and I find it very easy and effective. Sprinkle it on once a month, my roses have never looked and bloomed better (there are only three because most roses don't last here). I bought the Palm Tone and Flower Tone formulas later for my hibiscus and other flowers, gotta say I am pleased. The plants actually seem better than when I was using Osmosote or Miracle-Gro slow release pellets.
@TropicalPlantParty
@TropicalPlantParty 6 жыл бұрын
I use a variety of fertilizers, but espoma is my main brand. I like their blends because they not only feed the plants through a release of micro and macro nutrients, but they enrich the soil which long term, via fungi and bacteria helps to grow nice strong plants with balanced health. I have never been dissapointed with any of the fertilizers I've used from them. Now i do have some plants that i typically grow more as an annual, like elephant ears and bananas that I sometimes just go for high nitrogen once they have set their roots out, and then I just use a homemade beer, ammonia epsom salt mix. But that's not something I use for perennials like roses, hydrangeas or shrubs in general. Only other brand I'm a pretty big fan of is J.R Peters, they have some nice blends too, especially when I want something with a lot of potassium for the petunias and hibiscus. I miss my roses! There just isn't enough sun for them in the late summer and fall for them in my yard anymore. I may try potting some up next year so I can move them around seasonally to stay in the sun, but they just do so much better in the ground. What kind of roses are you growing? ... wouldn't it be nice if with all of the hybridizing they are doing if they would make some roses for hot and wet climates!?
@michaelmccarthy4077
@michaelmccarthy4077 6 жыл бұрын
I have two very old hybrids, Clotilde Soupert (very fragrant) and Old Blush (mild fragrance), and one Double Red Knockout Rose. I like the Knockout because it grows and blooms steadily but it has no fragrance. The other two tend to produce a mass of blooms, rest, regrow and then another flush of blooms. All three are suited to growing in south FL, very disease resistant and heat tolerant (though the blooms on Clotilde Soupert can suffer if it is very hot and wet). The thing about growing roses well in Florida is 1) they need to be own root 2) they do better planted in containers because of nematodes in the soil here. There are some newer hybrids (like the Knockout line) which are supposed to be suited to growing here but I can only ever find them grafted. I've been trying to find a Belinda's Dream, which is a gorgeous pink, for over a year. I think the trick to growing roses well in a container (at least here) is to use a ridiculously large pot comparative to the plant which gives the roots room to expand and keeps the soil more evenly moist, use a rather heavy potting media (50% potting soil/50% garden soil) and fertilize well. I can see how sun is a problem in your yard with the trees maturing (and roses do love their sun). If only you could create a garden on the roof for the sun lovers 😉.

@TropicalPlantParty
@TropicalPlantParty 5 жыл бұрын
Hey! If they are like the one in the video where the growth is coming from the sides of the trunk, then there isn't much you can do to thicken it up. If it is a single growth with no offshoots then you can cut the top growth which will encourage it to branch and to thicken, but will only make a slight difference with the girth. I've read that with some succulent type plants, you can plant them in a very wide and shallow pot to help thicken them up. I've never tried that with a yucca before. Usually with plants like yucca the trunk's thickness is determined by the hydration the plant recieved when it was smaller and just starting to develop their trunk.
