Canelo initially delayed the GGG fight, even vacated the belt to avoid the fight when GGG was mandatory. It was in his favor because GGG was aging out at 35 and Canelo 26. Now Canelo is on the opposite end, the longer he waits the more he ages, Canelo turns 34 in July, and he’s been fighting since he was 15, with 65 pro fights, knee surgery, wrist surgery, etc. David is 27, bigger, longer, heavier, and hungrier. So that’s a big risk for Canelo this late in his career. I understand why he wants an absurd payday (200 million). But what I don’t understand is why he doesn’t vacate the belts and let the top contenders get a shot. While he continues on his selective money fights. But he just continues to claim he’s the best, nobody can beat him, this is his era, etc. While avoiding the fight the fans are clamoring for in Benavidez.

Benavidez only took an actual title eliminator last march against Plant and they were set to rule on his status this march but just weeks beforehand Benavidez suddenly rushed to sign a fight with Gvozdyk at 175 and requested the WBC name it an eliminator instead of activating his mandatory at 168. Also it's comical when Benavidez fanboys claim the WBC did him wrong when they repeatedly pulled strings for him but he keeps ducking out on opportunities. Just to give a more detailed breakdown: David claimed his first vacant belt by being allowed to cut in front of Callum Smith who was the actual WBC #1. Smith complained so he was made mandatory but David dropped his belt instead of taking the fight. The WBC then gave David another shot at the same belt and let him cut in front of the Dirrell-Yildirim rematch, so what did David do this time? Publicly rejected a Plant unification and dismissed Smith who had been petitioning for the fight all along just to fight randos like Angulo. Finally the WBC ordered David to fight his years backed up mandatories Smith and Yildirim but David dropped his belt like a hot potato. The WBC then gave him ANOTHER title shot at 175 but David ducked out on that too despite coming in overweight by 3 pounds. And the WBC put him in line for an eliminator vs Plant but Benavidez requested an 175 eliminator instead of activating mandatory at 168. Now the WBC is allowing him the option of choosing mandatory between 2 divisions, either 168 or 175 if he gets past Gvozdyk, but going by David's track record he'll probably cherrypick another rando.

Honestly, if anyone can beat Canelo it is David Benavidez. Canelo knows that too. So, he has not taken on that fight. He wants to stay undisputed champion. It is that simple. There is the fact that Benavidez weights a lot and is more of a natural light-heavy weight -- but Canelo should be able to handle light-heavy weight like he did with Bivol. The issue is this guy can beat him. By the way, Bivol vs Benavides is a fight I want to see.
