Canewdon, Essex, WitchCraft, Ghosts, The Devil | Stories Of The Supernatural

Canewdon Is Believed To Be A Centre Of Witchcraft. Legend Has It That While The Church Tower Stands, There Will Always Be Six Witches In Canewdon.
Local folklore also says that if you walk around it seven times on Halloween you will see a witch, and 13 times you will become invisible. Both these stories have made the village a popular destination on Halloween, to such an extent that the police often seal off the village to non-residents on Halloween!.
Essex was the starting point in 1644 of the worst witch hunt ever initiated in England, led by the witch-finder General Matthew Hopkins, with its inhabitants suffering indescribable horrors at his hand; and; Canewdon, this small isolated village believed to be a centre of witchcraft, as such it has become known as “The Witch Country”.

Canewdon is located on the Crouch Estuary, the village is sited on the highest hill of coastal Essex. Its name derives from the Saxon meaning “hill of Cana’s people”. Local tradition has it that a camp near the village was used by Canute during the Battle of Assandun.
Even today Canewdon has a lonely feel to it. Surrounded by the mudflats and marshes of the Thames Estuary it is easy to imagine how isolated the community must have been in the past.
Dominating the village is this 14th century Parish Church called St Nicholas. The church stands on a ridge overlooking the River Crouch, its most striking feature being the 15th century tower which was built to commemorate Henry V’s victory at Agincourt.
A number of ghost stories abound in the area giving it the reputation of being one of the most haunted places in Essex. The most widely seen apparition is that of a grey lady with a poke bonnet and no face who has been spotted floating on moonless nights from the church’s west gate towards the river. Another popular story refers to a headless ghost seen in the church who has a tendency to pick unwary victims up and deposit them in a nearby ditch. Locals also reported in the 1980s that a man on a motorbike was chased by a small demonic entity that was just as fast as the bike.

I'm really enjoying your witch stories, Stephen and Yhana. I loved hearing about the history of the area and about the ghostly tales that abound. I wouldn't want to meet the headless ghost who picks the unwary up and deposits them in a nearby ditch! The demon that chased a man on a motorbike at full speed was also super scary. In fact, all the apparitions are very creepy indeed! 🧙‍♀🧹👻👻

I don’t think I would want that demon chasing me either, the experience the biker had (what ever it may have been), must have been super scary for him. Oooo, so creepy! I don't think I would be brave enough to visit at midnight on any night. The stories of the sightings themselves are enough to make the hairs on my neck stand on end!

It is a creepy place to be honest, stark is a better word. the locals are very wary too, of people hanging around the church. I guess they have had their fare share of trouble over the years. Probably why the police close of the road at Halloween 🎃 The stories of Canewdon have been popular since Victorian times, the folklore may go back further then that too. Journalists and ghost hunters have reported punctured tires whilst driving home. I was aware of that before I visited. Luckily my car made it home lol 😆

It randomly started raining as I walked around the church. Even though it was a nice day too. I think the police have had a big presence in this area for many years now, especially on Halloween. I’m not sure what kind of trouble the village have dealt with, but I can imagine it’s a very noisy affair. Especially if many different groups turn up to take part in the superstitions that surround the church. 👻
