Homeowners wanting to grow vegetables face many challenges .. city ordinances, home owners associations, even obnoxious neighbors can be problematic .. but there are things that a savvy homeowner can plant and grow that everyone else will just assume to be flowers (and in the case of Canna Lily, pretty and exotic looking ones, too!) WARNING!! Not All Lilies are edible: Day Lily and Canna Lily are not true lilies, and they are edible .. but other plants with the common name 'Lily" may be. If you are not confident that you have properly identified a plant, don't eat it!

I can't get rid of cannas in a space I'd like to repurpose. They propagate from any little bit of root of lower shoot matter no matter how chopped up I make them. Crazy easy to grow.

Crazy easy to grow is a plus, as long as you want them there .. You might need to completely cover up the spot where they are growing for a full season to get them to die off .. Maybe even 2 seasons, given the amount of starch they store in the roots

Wow! Well Jason, after viewing this IRIE Video we know the answer is YES, Canna Lily help us grow more food. My Mom and her sisters considered this lily an expensive ornamental, to not waste any time or money on growing it but they were wrong, not only beautiful flowers and foliage on three parts of the plants are edible! After viewing David The Good's Namé Yam 'stream and now your Canna Lily vid....well, pays to be always on alert for the opportunities out there awaiting us. Being the botanical genius that you are you've probably heard of the root/tuber Malanga? Saw it on sale at the supermarket so I'll be copying DTG, buying some for eating and also for planting. Uprated, thanks for sharing and hello from Mexico. :)

They call it "Taro" up here, but I'm a little too far North to grow it - great source of starch for everyone who can grow them, though .. takes a bit of processing to get rid of the oxalate in them from what I hear. I HAVE seen them for sale as indoor ornamental plants.

FYI, I understand that hostas have edible shoots, with flavor variations between varieties. You might want to consider them as edible ornamentals, especially since they tolerate shade. How well do cannas propagate?
@Green.Country.Agroforestry

I'm about to learn how well they propagate :) I have plans to add some Hosta and ferns into the garden as shade develops .. there is ONE spot right now where I can get away with planting some!

Sure! Prepare some short grained rice, and steam your prawns .. while those are cooking, put coconut oil in your pan at low heat, and add slivers of garlic and ginger, a small pinch of cumin, and a few peppercorns. Sautee at low heat until the aromatic oils have been released, then add scallions and wood ear mushrooms. Chop some coriander greens (cilantro) and cut your Canna shoots into bite sized pieces, and add to the sauté. Make a bed of short grain rice on a banana leaf, and arrange the prawns on top. Continue to sauté the canna lily until tender, then deglaze with lime juice, and serve on top of the prawns. Garnish with a lily flower, and Bon Appetit!

How much harvest can you get from a single plant? Are they prolific like sunchokes?
@Green.Country.Agroforestry
@Green.Country.Agroforestry 3 жыл бұрын
I'm just finding out, myself .. at the moment, I'm planning on treating them a bit like asparagus - give them a year or two before I start harvesting shoots. I can take flowers right off, of course. I've noticed that day lilies need about 3 years between divisions, so I imagine that they will probably be similar - but we'll find out!

@@Green.Country.Agroforestry we grew canna in Fayetteville AR. Never knew they were edible. We only had them die in the ground once and that was a cold year. Dont think ill try them up here though. Too much work digging and planting for an unknown harvest. Stick with sunchokes. They are beautiful though. Good luck and we will be waiting to see the results

I'll be sure not to ask you for directions. Haha. Got a bunch of... rhizomes? Are they technically rhizomes? I feel like this was one of the ones that looks like a rhizome but is actually a stolon or tuber... from a friend. It's still too cold here. They're not even thinking about sprouting. But I'll be happy to get them in the ground this year and see how they do. Don't know how much I'll be eating the first few years. Planning on them being one of my big sources of biomass in these early years so I gotta get them spread around. I tried one small bite. I don't recall it being particularly fibrous. At least nothing compared to something like cattail, which I've absolutely fallen in love with. But my roots are also much thicker than what you showed... I don't know if that's down to my friend's growing conditions, the age of the root, or if you received a different species than what you thought you were getting (was this a rescue, or a purchase, or...?) I'd love to compare results at the end of the season and try to get you hooked up with better genetics if your crop doesn't perform as expected. I don't know that I'll be able to spare any, but I can probably hook you up with my friend.

Cool beans! These ones, I believe are of the species 'Edulis' .. but You're correct, there are a few different species. Root age may very well be a factor, not only in size, but the degree of fiberosity (just made that word up) These ones were purchased from the local ranch store, and I'm guessing that they are Edulis from the picture. I don't know how they were grown, but they came packed in peat.
@stonedapefarmer
@stonedapefarmer 3 жыл бұрын
@Jason Avers Yeah. I only tried a sliver of one of mine, so I don't know if the "fiberosity" might be higher in a larger sample size. In any case, it'll be cool to see how our respective patches compare. Could be mine friend was just being generous with the ones she sent. 🤷🏻‍♂️
