Thank you for this. I’ve been taking cuttings for 30+ years, but I learned something. Although I’ve had some luck, I think in the past, I’ve left too much greenery on. Also, not about cuttings, but about the “Chelsea chop”. I had some phlox which the deer ate the tops off because I forgot to protect it with deer spray. Well recently I noticed, lo and behold, it put on more blooms than it would have and now it looks lovely. I thought of you and I guess the deer knew about the “Chelsea chop”. 😊. Gave me a laugh.

Great video. In order to get three new limelight hydrangeas, I pinned three low hanging branches of my mature shrub into pots of soil early in the spring. By fall they each had enough roots to cut the branch free of the mother plant. I put them in the ground, mulched them well over the winter and they are now two feet tall with flowers. In a few years they should be 8 to 10 feet tall. Without a greenhouse and extremely expensive electricity, it's the only economical way I could find to make new plants.

Love this! Love your personality and clear, straightforward explanations. Unfortunately, many of the plants you mentioned were toxic to pets and I TRY to keep those out of my collection. What toxic ones I do have are only in my front yard. I KNOW dogs shouldn't eat plants, and perhaps mine wouldn't, but I have a Jack Russell puppy that eats every stick, stem, or piece of wood he can get his paws on. And NO, he won't figure out "Drop it!" yet....sigh. I am a Salvia LOVER though and have several different variaties in my own yard in Florida. I now plan to try the one you had. What beautiful flowers! In fact, I DID just take some cuttings of some of mine as well as some Gomphrena recently and lost them all because I THOUGHT I had put them in a shady spot. Alas, too much sun actually hit it. Soooo, this video inspired me to go take more!! Thank you again. God Bless you for your time and talents you are sharing with us.

Hey,this is my first time here.. I would love to learn more about taking cuttings,I have rooted rosemary & one piece of lavender 😅😅,my tomato plant, passion flower,yep I have rooted more than I thought🤣🤣..But you never stop learning.. I'm so excited to be here & gardening really helps with my mental health,also feeding the birds,I can't get over how calm I feel,all my anxiety gone,it does you the world of good.. Fabulous video. Thank you Georgie. I love propagating plants- especially my roses. I find I get lovely strong plants from cuttings. I want to take cuttings from my salvias, but have been frightened to do so- worried about damaging my precious babies. I am going to be brave following your great instruction. Thank you. I have collected 100 dahlias over the past few years. I get really annoyed when I order a plant I really want, wait 4 months for it to grow and start flowering, only to find I've been sent the wrong variety- so frustrating. This has happened most years over the past 5 years, from different retailers. Happy gardening 🙂

Plant propagation was what fascinated me about gardening when I first started gardening some 30 years ago. Brilliant stuff. I need to take some penstemon from my garden. Do you not use rooting powder? Oh and if you take a pop bottle and either use a fine drill bit or hot needle you can make some holes in the lid, makes for a fine watering system.

Thank you. I watched avidly…..learning what I had done wrong with my first attempt at taking cuttings! Two questions….. 1. Can I remedy the penstemon cuttings that I didn’t leave the heel on…..I cut the wrong end to make the cutting shorter? 😂 2. How do you know whether to put them in water or soil? I tried the penstemons in water first and nothing happened……maybe as I had cut the heel off? The cuttings are amazingly still alive (I subsequently popped them in compost in a pot)…I need to go and cut the leaves and snip out the middle though. I very much appreciate you posting this, thanks.

Great ideas there, I need to do my penstemon as it's got quite woody. I'm a bit worried about your clematis cuttings, you normally take a leaf node cutting, it looks as if you just used a leaf in which case there is no bud to grow on. The same with the Akebia. I hope I'm wrong and you get some great plants for next year's sale.

Georgie! Thank you! I’m saving this one. Bye the way, when am I going to read that new novel? I really enjoyed your first one. People find and read her book All Desires Known.

Thank you Georgie,this was such a helpful video, if I put my cuttings in the greenhouse for the winter, when could they come out? I’m limited for space and I need my greenhouse empty for March, is it ok to put them out then, do you think?

Depends where you are - usually I'd wait till later - can you set up a kind of cold frame?

Very interesting. I love taking cuttings but recently found peat free compost doesnt always give good results. Is the sylvagrow your 'go to' medium or do you use a more cheap type at times.
@theflowerfarmer

I just use sylvagrow - always peat free here x

Georgie, I do adore you and how much I learn from you! Do I have to use compost to plant in? Compost is expensive for me or can mix it with something else? I do have small greenhouse but I am zone 6a and it gets quite cold here. I do overwinter some plants in my basement. Would this be adequate light with grow lights?
@theflowerfarmer
@theflowerfarmer 2 ай бұрын
you need some kind of growing medium - do you have any garden compost you could mix with the diggings of a mole hill for example to make something to dib them into? So long as they don't get too warm the basement/grow-light system sounds good to try x

Zone 6 in Connecticut, US and no greenhouse. Can I over-winter the rooted cuttings under lights in my 60 F basement?

I live in Maine and I keep my cuttings in the house near a window all Winter long. I have had success with hydrangea, clematis, buddleia, hampton daisy and cotinus grace. Georgie, love, love, love all your advice. Your enthusiasm is contagious.

I'd say a bit late for biennials but have a go and if they don't flower for another twelve months you'll feel as though you're very ahead the following year x

I laughed at the "guaranteed to run in winter" part 😂 I use plastic labels with a 6B pencil. Sun and rain proof. I wash the labels in soapy water and then erase the pencil to re-use.
