@@3lo196 actually he has no clue what he is talking about. First you do not need to dissolve the cell structures, instead you break them open using sonication or silicate. Second, when doing large scale, you do not do batches, you do continuous flow systems. A variable geometry auger will compress CO2 to super critical pressures. Third, 5,000 psi is nothing. My engineering apprenticeship was at the company that created waterjets, think 120,000 to 200,000 psi, 25-40 times the pressure he is talking about. Lastly he needs to figure out his solubility issues. Is he looking for polar extraction, non-polar, both, what are the fractions in the solvents at the temp/pressure curve. It really sounds like he is buying equipment in China and rebadging it and marketing it via Google translate.

Good information but also pretty clear this company doesn't supply CO2 equipment, hence the fairly clear bias against CO2 technologies. Its important to remember for ethanol and hydrocarbon extraction that its not only the equipment that has to be build to the explosion safety requirements for the solvent but the entire environment and even the building the equipment is placed in. Although cost of equipment may be lower for ethanol and hydrocarbon extraction systems you may find yourself paying for this in your building design. However, he is correct that even if you use CO2 you will find yourself using large amounts of ethanol during the winterization process so the explosion requirements will likely still apply if you choose CO2 extraction. Not:, i don't sell equipment I use it, and all technologies have their benefits and drawbacks. I am in R&D for a medicinal cannabis company specializing in the extraction and purification process. Take caution when receiving advice from manufacturers especially if they dont sell the full suite of extraction technologies (CO@, ethanol, hydrocarbon).

You explained it wrong Buddy :) Co2 is not like solvent percolation , At Supercritical state Co2 diffuses into cell structure of plant material and carries away oil which can selectively extracted at separation stage plus Co2 extracts are safe as they dont have solvent residues . Also the Operational cost for Co2 Extraction is really low as it can be reused repeatedly and wastage is max 1% per batch

You are incorrect on a hydrocarbon extraction having zero PPM residual solvents. I see test results regularly showing residual solvents. Yes the results are below legal limits set by the states but the results don't back your statement of hydrocarbon extractions having a zero PPM result. At least not every single time... Maybe a quarter of the time at best.

It's rare for a person to have the scientific knowledge and ability that Mr. Tennant has and to also possess the ability to simplify the explanation so that the non-scientist can understand and learn. I was looking for exactly what was presented - what the difference is between CO2 and solvent extraction -- and is CO2 safer. Safer meaning many companies market their CBD saying that CO2 is the safest and all processes with solvents are unsafe because of residuals that are then contained in the final product. Thank you for such an informative presentation and for addressing some of the myths that have been generated in the field. Now I'm on to learning about Propylene Glycol vs Vegetable Glycol

I manage and extract at a lab that does butane/propane , Co2, ethanol and distillate. They all test solvent free when done being processed 🤷‍♂️. Co2 is great for terps though. For crude it’s just easier to run decarbed material and get better yields and do simple winterize than turn to distillate and re add the Co2 cannabis derived terps. Ethanol takes way more post processing to make into a project. That being said if you can lock water solubles in frozen state at -80+ you can extract ethanol and pull minimal fats and waxes. I’ve made diamonds and sugar wit ethanol that rivals some butane extracts and even had amazing flavor and terps. But I’m a butane guy. Hydrocarbons do better job of grabbing the goods without pulling water solubles like chlorophyll

Great knowledge, but SHOULD anyone be looking to process 2000-10,000 lbs per day? I'd imagine once built you would want this facility to run 5-7 days a week, so now you need 2.6-3.65 Million pounds of raw material annually. So that rules out any real quality standards, it'll just be a hungry monster, consuming biomass, any and all biomass. I know this isn't your job, but who the fuck is going to consume this crap. Sounds just like the big companies in Canada, left sitting on a 400 ton pile of unwanted cannabis. I assume you are selling this technology rather than providing the extraction as a service, meaning presumably, you'd want to sell more than one system. Good luck to all the companies looking to by a 10,000 lb per day system, maybe you can lobby governments to have it put in every product like corn is in the US.

Although CO2 is a safer medium (being non-flammable), I find that using excellent ventilation and glass containers for collection that butane is better for the extraction. A simple rig made of thick glass or PVC to hold the cannabis, coffee, sassafras root or vanilla beans for extraction is cost effective and easy to maintain and produces a pure product with good flavor.

The only argument against CO2 is the high pressure right? But why do you say 5.000 psi is high? LDPE processing for all the plastic bags and bottles is done at up to 50.000 psi. There are a lot of industries which work at this level. That is just easy stuff if you know what you are doing. You also forgot to mention the advantages of the versatile CO2 process and please don’t say that others want to sell equipment if that is what you intend to do with your video. Peace
@PrecisionExtractionSolutions
@PrecisionExtractionSolutions 4 жыл бұрын
We know those facilities operate at much higher PSI, but their processes, equipment, and the environment they operate in are completely different than a cannabis lab. That information aside, CO2 systems are typically 1/10 the throughput of organic solvent-based extraction, at 3-8x the cost for similar-sized equipment. Also, with Hydrocarbon and Ethanol, you can make 90+% of all extracted products where CO2 limits you to only a few. In an industry that is constantly evolving, you need to be able to make pivots, and solvent-based extraction allows you to do so.
@seiti7
@seiti7 4 жыл бұрын
@@PrecisionExtractionSolutions Okay, but what do you do if you don't want to extract just everything but want to have a selective high quality product without any unwanted reactions during the extraction process and any effects on the end products? Then CO2 is the rigth choice. I know that everything comes with a downside but there are also good reasons for using CO2. ;-)

Cool stuff. Thanks. I use 151 rum to make a cannabis tincture is small personal-size batches. I bake the flowers first before combining with the ethanol in a small pickle jar. The baking, if done correctly, decarboxylates the flowers and gets rid of the chlorophyll. I leave the cannabis in the jar with the ethanol and spoon out whatever dose I desire. When the potency drops, I drain the ethanol and run the leftover plant matter through a potato ricer to extract whatever goodness remains. I used to use 151 Everclear, but I can no longer get that in California. I have been able to make an ounce of flowers last 16 weeks with this method. Great pain remedy.

Would transesterification solve the the ethanol problem in your opinion ? As in removing trace solvent from the end product ?
@nicktennant7458
@nicktennant7458 4 жыл бұрын
Most extractors take the path of least resistance. Because almost all oil is decarboxylated post primary extraction, the low residual ethanol is chalked up as a loss and evaporated during decarb. This would make transesterification potentially viable but unpractical for this application.

Right now I have a few 5 gallon buckets of 99.9% Isopropyl alcohol that was used to soak a bunch of scrap herbs. It's nice and filtered. Figure I'll run it through my moonshine still until I have a few gallons of extract in the still and about 6gallons of recycled solvent. From there I'll be mixing the concentrated extract with activated charcoal and refiltering it through a fine mesh nylon bag and allowing it to thoroughly dry. As in a few weeks. The activated charcoal removes all of the chlorophyl making it clear instead of green BTW. Later, I'll do a room temp rinse with acetone and keep the acetone layer and dump the rest which is just wax and crud. This doubles the potentcy easily. From there I'll dry out the acetone thoroughly as in a a few days and bake it in the oven at 210 f several hours to purge any remaining solvent. Then I'll probably redissolve it in methanol and pour it all into a smaller glass baking pan and once that's dried it's basically shatter without any solvent residue. It takes forever but is low budget and effective. The results are as good as BHO extract. i've taken the final methanol stage and dried it in cotton balls and used them for a BHO extract with no improvements to it at all. It was pure already.

CO2 is not a weak solvent. It is not being used properly due to the expense and difficulty to use it. A true liquid phase solvent that matches the polarity of your target while still being able to boast of a 100F lower boiling point than your target is what you use. Does not matter what media, political controversy or market strategy is used to change your mind. You cannot change molecular physics. Boiling point of the solvent and Polarity are the criteria for choosing a solvent. Cost and safety come into play as well. Safety is about flammability but labs are equipped for that and is an acceptable mitigated risk now so cost is the number one factor. Solvents with boiling points that do not go so far far below the boiling point of the target are going to be easier and cheaper to boil away. Cost to boil/recover solvent and replace them if the systems leaks them out is the constant cost that haunts you after you buy a extraction system. Matching solvent boiling point and polarity to the targets is what makes the solvent and system work or not. Being able to modify that solvent used to adapt to a new target is what makes it work even better. Extraction is not the time to be fucking around with creating a finish on the output. We are all adept in post processing by now or should be. Forget about cold super fast extractions to create vape pen oil. As the scale goes up so do the risk involved in losses to efficiency when extracting. You cannot afford to throw 20% away in your plant column every time you empty it. Get it all out and focus on post processing to refine into marketable products. Hell we dont even make tea or coffee with fast cold processes. We use heat and time and when it comes to the expense of loading a column or making products we should be using heat, contact time and 2-3 solvents with varying polarity as well. Still in their infancy.

Not disputing the process.not the point.just simply pointing out that while the solvent is removed,do we absolutely know for fact it did not alter the end product in any way,or is it simply assumed? How much analysis and chem break down was done on these products? I mean just speaking from experience in a few applications of distillation,I know that there are certain volitals,or metals or chemicals that may or may not boil off with everything else.some boil off very early on.and any time your boiling a substance like that there is a possibility of it breaking down into smaller components as a result.just food for thought.

Disagree with your co2 opinion. Co2 is much better are targeting cannabinoids far better than pulling a buck of green black chlorophyll our with ethanol. I think you need to do more research before you talk about something you don’t understand. And your key analogy is stupid.

Very informative video. However, the background music is totally distracting attention. Why did you choose hardrock or whatever this is? No connection to the content and not supporting anything...

The company where I get my oil from have changed from c02 to ethanol, and personally it's definitely feels not as pure and I wake up with a headache and the colour is dark and tastes strange. And the c02 extract was a nice golden colour and tasted much better. But most importantly waking up with a headache is not ideal and tells me the process isn't as good as c02 im really not happy with the ethanol extracted oil.

Basically the speaker is advocating Butanol as the best way to extract from Hemp material compared to all other technologies and secondly marketing their expertise in fabrication and design on how to overcome problems in butanol extraction. Right ?

These positive comments scare me but also show why it is so easy to mistake your way to the top in the cannabis industry. I see a kid in a lab coat leading the blind. So many mistakes in his presentation but love the polish and shine. Clean cut kid..

yeah these methods they show on these post waste like 70% of your green. just boil the bud in water a few mins . then filter like always .and leave on a candle warmer . the dry the bud out . and either smoke it when it dries out in 3 days or rewash it for the left over oil the first wash didnt get out . i found washing it one time . you get higher than the non wash for some reason.

Really misleading. CO2 is an extremely versatile solvent, which can be tuned to almost any non-polar application (or indeed polar with a small amount of co-solvent). In our experience, in 45 minutes, CBD extraction is complete (with 20x solvent to biomass ratio) and with in-line fractionation, there is no need for winterisation. Supercritical propane/butane has advantages indeed, especially the fact that there is no residual moisture in the product, but almost impossible from a compliance point of view. Ethanol will not work with many non-cannabis applications, so you are locked into a monoline CAPEX heavy business. And with regards to costs, I doubt that a solvent extraction plant with a capacity of 2 tonnes a day would cost much less than $1M. Nice promotional video, with mostly correct thesis, but very biased in favour of the product that you sell.

You could practically repost what you said with each solvent system replaced by as they all have their upsides, are modestly versatile, with tunability, the ability to create speedy outcomes with the proper engineering and optimization, etc. etc. The Broader point made in the video about the unrealistic, downright false, claims that are routinely made within this space about residual solvent impurities are CORRECT. In the context of legal, regulated cannabis industry, there is no issue of solvent entrainment.... just as there is no issue of solvent in ALL chemically adjacent natural products that have been extracted via similar mechanisms and solvent systems for the last 40+ years. The only legitimately "novel" or "new" techniques in Cannabis are also "new" in natural product extraction, such as the shift to continuous/flow chemistry and purification and away from batch, technologies that complement that design (like the various types of countercurrent partition chromatography and rectification, simulated moving bed column chromatography, and membrane solutions like OSN for ethanol recovery and membrane partition/separation as an alternative to winterization and other polishing steps).

Question: If you are purging out the solvents in the end through decarboxilation or distillation, aren't you also altering the terpenes and cannabinoids you just extracted by "cooking" them to some degree?

I'll buy two of everything that your company has to sell as long as I can hire three people who know's as much as this guy does. Last year's profits reached well over five million just for dry flower here in just one county and there's over a two hundred county's were I live. But there is no local places in my state to do this kind of processing so the market is most definitely here and there is a fortune waiting to be made. I just wish I had the investment capital to start offering this service to all our local growers and distributors. It just might be time to sell some bit coins to get this up and running but to be totally honest I don't have the foggiest idea were to start other thing selling some of my bitcoins to raise the money. But I definitely going to be doing some research on this and hopefully come up with a complete plan. My only wish is for the federal government to go ahead and legalize weed across the whole country. It would be a great benefit to the US economy and might even help get us out of this depression we are in.
