Historically, this was a subproduct of fencing learning (16th century). Then, it was practiced by the ones who were not allowed to have a sword (only for the nobility class) ; also in times when swords were banned (too many duels). Also, at some point in time it was learned in police and military schools, like "savate".

I could get used to this style of dueling. Kendo and fencing just doesn't cut it for me, since the rounds end too quickly whenever someone gets hit. I personally like the more theatrical style of sword-fighting, and I don't care much for realism and practicality. So discovering that there's a style of fighting out there like this, where the round doesn't end the moment someone gets hit, and has tons of jumping and spinning, it was a very pleasant surprise for me.
@jacoblucas42597 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I love fencing for all the mindgames, but this stuff just looks so cool.
@kurok1sh1705 жыл бұрын
Except as much as these men have trained if they were to be matched against a traditional fencer or bushido fighter they would lose simply because they may be fast but those swings wouldn't cause a lot of damage even on lightly armoured opponents. Kendo, HEMA, fencing and any kind of shielded style would thrash this style in minutes at most. I understand your liking of more theatrical and fluid motions and longer lasting rounds but please don't allow yourself to consider this a viable martial art in any regard
@trusevich5 жыл бұрын
Ahem... what a stupid thing to say. In Kendo and Fencing rounds end quickly (for those without skills) - only during competition. Which doesn't happen every day. You are free to spar as long as you want or sensei/coach decide during training. But it's much easier just sit on the couch and post random comments :)
@gesshugh99765 жыл бұрын
@@kurok1sh170 Um that's an unfair comparison. Kendo and fencing and HEMA are sword arts. You realize this isn't a sword art right? This is cane fighting. It was developed for street fighting in a time when most people carried canes. So yes, real fight, one person with a sword and armor vs another with a cane, sword guy wins. but give them both sticks, and then it changes drastically. If anything, one could argue this holds more realism and use in a modern era. A guy with a cane(who isn't too old to do this anyway) would certainly stand out, but not nearly so much as a dude walking around with a sword.
@gesshugh99765 жыл бұрын
@@trusevich He's talking about continual engagement. As in touching the opponent doesn't reset. Breaking the touch reset in fencing would sort of mess up the whole point of it. It represents getting stabbed with a sword. The reason they are more forgiving to strikes here, is because they are simulating striking your opponent with a gentlemen's walking cane.

Can you use Canne de Combat techniques with a SWORD!!??? o_O That will be awesome!!!
@Jetman1239 жыл бұрын
That was actually the reason it existed. When swords were outlawed on the streets of France, gentlemen started using canes with the same techniques they had used to use with their rapiers and smallswords, adding more swinging techniques over time to take advantage of the bludgeoning effect. Then it grew into a martial art on its own, both for self defense and sportive combat.
@4zerking9 жыл бұрын
Jetman123 Why is it that I have never seen any fighting style similar to this ? The dexterity of these guys is anormally good and I doubt a sword's weight is what keeps other swordsmen from moving the way they do. Even olympic fencers don't do that shit even though they have foils.
@Jetman1239 жыл бұрын
4zerking These weapons ARE a lot lighter than many other weapons, because they're intended to hit and not do much injury. It's kind of the same way with a foam sword versus a real one. The real reason, though, is that like any martial sport (since it is a sport, in this case), rulesets promote this kind of behavior over more cautious or conservative approaches. Sports aren't a bad thing, but in real combat you'd use a wider range of maneuvers and face threat from a wider range of maneuvers in turn. It's quite a spectacle, but the real street-proven techniques of La Canne are a little different. Fencing foils are very whippy and you tend to lose your ability to parry if you flail them around, let alone the fact that olympic fencing doesn't allow you to move off a straight line with your opponent, and it forces you to parry before attacking with your own weapon. This promotes a much more conservative mindset, for example.
@4zerking9 жыл бұрын
Jetman123 Damn, I forgot to take the weight into account. And the sport thing. Well, the reason I never do sports is to avoid these bad behaviours. I damn wish I could find some real sword instructor, but there isn't any in my town ( whether sport oriented or not ). But also, sports simply don't appeal me. I don't mind some football but I don't have any attraction for sportish fights.
@Jetman1239 жыл бұрын
4zerking Games and sports ARE really good at training up certain mindsets and reflexes, but they have to be combined with additional training regarding the real world, indeed. I don't mean to shit on them, it's just a fact of game vs real life. Have you tried HEMA Alliance's group finder, by chance?
