Just discovered your videos, and watched several of them today. Very informative, practical, and easy to understand. There are many parallels to experiences I've had with the various sailboats I've owned over the years, such as blister repair, snaking a cable through a mast, and drilling or resizing holes in the vessel. But the nugget that's of most value is your recurrent theme about authentically following what you're passionate about. Thanks for sharing your experiences with the rest of us.

hey Shipmate! Was an RM3/IT COMSIXFLT/USS Belknap cg26 and USS Taylor FFG 50 from 93-97...Keep up the good work on the vlog. I've been sailing (mostly race crew) for 2 years now, but I am trying to learn all I can before I get a boat of my own. Your vlogs make the sailing experience a lot less intimidating. And it is definitely intimidating right now. So keep 'em coming, and fair winds and following seas! Hope to see you out there someday!

Get use to the Sounds. Fantastic history when the area was occupied by Native Americans in and around the Albemarle and Pamilco Sounds plus their tributaries. Also insightful history during the slave times where slaves had more freedom than any where else in the South. In my sailing days I spent a lot of time studying the history of the coastal area and found it so enjoyable. Try it. You might actually like it. It makes the passageways so much more meaningful. Like they say, "Slow down and smell the flowers!"

Josh, I am bringing my "new to me" Beneteau 423 up from Marco Island Fl to Annapolis. I plan to do some outside and some ICW. I wouldn't say my boat is a money pit, maybe just a puddle so far.

A much more different vibe than the big sailboat vlogs. I like it. On another note, if you are gonna make those tacos again sprinkle smoked chipotle powder on the chicken it will taste better

Money Pit is a true classic...T. Hanks makes me laugh out loud every time he laughs at the tub falling threw the floor! LOL! Question for you and your followers....(FYI I do not own a sailboat and have ZERO experience in offshore sailing) Why don't you sail in the open water (ocean) for a more straight line journey to your destination as apposed to the ICW? Obviously seas are rougher, but it seems like you have an experienced crew with you. Hopefully my ignorance didn't just get the best of me. Thanks Josh and Crew!

hi there. Not sure if you were able to see the previous episode, but there was bad weather in the ocean, which is why we did the ICW for a couple legs. We then did a leg off shore sailing from Beaufort, NC to Wilmington, SC and nearly died. I learned quickly that the Atlantic Ocean is not a place you want to be in winter, too many cold fronts and heavy winds and waves. Things are a bit better as you get farther south.

Totally agree g75218 about the part with tom hanks and the tub! I think most of us can relate to being caught in a money pit ( boat, car, house). Splash was another excellent movie with Mr. Hanks and then it pretty much went south from there on. Tom hanks will always make me laugh at his stupidity when he predicted while being taped that dinars ours in flying saucers would arrive on earth before Mr. Trump would be elected president... Lol...

Josh, I have a couple of questions. First one is your anchor. I have the same anchor a 85lb Mantus. I just got it and it seems to hit the bottom of my roller a little. I have a Harken system. What size anchor do you have, and how far off the deck is the bottom of your drum? Secondly do you know the mast hit limit of the ICW?
@JoshPostVlogs
@JoshPostVlogs 5 жыл бұрын
Hi. I have a 35 lb Mantus. The recommended size for my boat is actually 45 lb but that wouldn't fit my bow roller so I had to go with 35 lb. I've been very happy (knock on wood, It's quite windy tonight and I'm on anchor). I can't imagine an 85 lb Mantus because even the 45 lb was huge. You must have a very large boat? Regarding ICW, the max mast height is 65 ft from the water line. Many bridges are 65 ft.

I only have a 44 foot boat that weighs around 35,000lb. They say there isn't any such a thing as too big an anchor. I want to say put in a blow. Backup anchor is my old 55 Delta.

Hey Josh. The last couple of weeks I've been watching videos like yours, Tarka, and many others and been getting really excited for the idea of getting into sailing. However, I myself don't quite have the means to buy a boat yet, nor do I have ANY experience. Have any advice you might be able to offer on where I'd want to start?
@JoshPostVlogs
@JoshPostVlogs 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! It all depends on where you live. Do you live near a sailing area? If so, the best thing to do is sign up to help sailing clubs for the typical Wednesday or Friday night races. Most sailing towns have these. Don't let the term "race" dissuade you. These are not super competition but more just for fun. Lots of sailors usually need crew to help for the hour or 2 per week. This is a great way to get familiar with sailing without having to buy your own boat. Also, you can visit some marinas and yacht clubs. There are lots of salty sailor types who love to show newbies the ropes. Let me know what you find. Cheers and good luck!

I just realized you are correct. Shoot. My footage and memory have blurred together. I think we anchored in the Alligator River that night. Then the next night was Hobucken at RE Mayo. Thanks for catching that.

Very cool. Now that I think more about it and examined the map, we went from Norfolk to just north of Coinjock on the first day. Then to Alligator River. Then to Belhaven, NC, then Hobucken, then to Beaufort, NC. There is a nice, inexpensive marina near Belhaven where we stayed for a couple days, it's called Dowry Marina. I didn't get any video from there for some reason. Nice people there though, free laundry if I recall and a nice little clubhouse where you can use the kitchen and relax. Are you on a sailboat? We went very slow. We only averaged about 5 to 6 knots. The good thing is you can drop anchor almost anywhere as long as you get out of the channel. How far are you going?
