I have had problems with wood shelving before, so I opted now for heavy metal shelving. You always have great information. Thank you!

Whatever works for sure! It used to be this would be considered a cheaper way, but I'm not sure anymore :)

@@HomesteadDNA I can't afford the lumber in my area anymore. I'm on a limited income and a sheet of 1/4" plywood alone is $80 per sheet. 4 years ago, it was $17 a sheet. I scavenge around my property and just use what I have now a days.

I would love to have shelving like yours but my basement is old and leaks with every rain. My son has been "collecting" 2x6's to build my shelving but I still fear the dampness factor. He even collected a few 6x6 posts for the corners. My house was built in 1957 and is constructed of oak and brick. I have a working stock room on the main floor right off the kitchen and don't worry about the amount of weight. I use steel shelving in there and my main storage (my home canned goods) are in an upright freezer that doesn't work and in 15 totes stacked 2 high on pallets in the basement to keep them above the incoming water. I know the pallets are not a good idea due to possible mold from getting wet and drying out, but it's the best I can do. Can't afford the French drain it would take to fix the leaking so we do the best we can with what we have...great looking shelves would be nice but not practical in my case.

We feel your pain there, this is just the best corner of our basement that doesn't leak 'much' rain. :) I don't know what you all have tried for the water, but I always try to give info if I can. Often times its just a grading issue away from the house. Our gutters dropped right on a slope that go back INTO the foundation on one side, and that's what's causing the leaks. On three sides we were able to stop it by just adding long extensions to the gutters to move the water away from the foundation. Unfortunately, as I've been told not every basement was meant to be dry and to make one dry that wasn't meant to be is crazy expensive. We do what we can with what we have! You sound resourceful and thanks for commenting and watching!

@@HomesteadDNA now that you mention it, I do have one wall that stays reasonably dry. The side where the carport is attached seems to keep most of the leakage out. I'll have to do some rearranging, but I think I can make that wall work...ooooo, 60 feet of shelves would be awesome 🤣🤣🤣

Thank you for such an informative video, Danny. May I ask if you think the addition of metal "L" brackets are at all helpful for weight distribution on such shelving? Cheers, Ardith

Absolutely, I don't know why I didn't even think to mention those! It probably wouldn't prevent sagging in the middle, but it definitely would be a nicer replacement for the side blocks!
