I used to pack our two freezers with meat, because we had a rural homestead and we hunted, as well as buying at local butcher. But storms and vandalism took out entire county's electric grid several times a year. We lost so much of meat, which was big financial hit. So, I started buying canned hams, canned chicken, canned tuna, canned stews, manwich, etc. Cost much less, still gives protein and long shelf life. Added jars and envelopes of gravy, Lipton onion soup, spices, herbs, instant potatoes, etc. In hard financial or food scarcity times or shelter-in-place times...you can still make good meals and feed your family. You could also barter.

That was a great idea for a gift. In the Spanish section of food. Knorr has powdered tomatoes. It is a 32 oz jar. Quite large and tastes very good. Also in the same section is powdered milk. NIDO and has the milk fats and vitamins for children. It comes in large canisters. And you can also make butter with it. Because it has the milk fats.

@@joyfullythriving It is actually a flavor of Knorr bouillon which is a mix of tomato powder with chicken bouillon. Knorr also makes a dried soup pouch called SOPA. The SOPA has tomato powder with pasta flavors. I take a Knorr SOPA pouch and add a few other ingredients to turn it into a low cost meal. For example, Knorr SOPA tomato with elbow is a simple start for a Chili Mac. I can just add chili seasoned beans for the meal. Knorr SOPA is 56 cents a pouch in my area.

Hi I appreciate your effort to educate. I wanted to add if you don't know already how to store fresh eggs from people how raise chickens. 5 gallon bucket 2 quarts of water ( I think) 1 ounce of hydrated lime. One bucket will hold about 300 eggs for about 1-2 years. There are screw top lids you can order to prevent evaporation. Also I learned that grocery stores with a bakery might give you buckets for free. Sister stay safe.
@pennysimpson47072 жыл бұрын
I think it's 1 ounce per quart.. also to make vinegar. Use large glass jar put in lots of dried apples, figs or cooked gluttonous rice which ever kind of vinegar you want to make. add distilled water. Cover with cheese cloth and put in cool dark space for about 25-30days. Take out fruit or rice and put on lid and let ferment. Wine vinegar is just to leave bottle open with cheese cloth and it will turn to vinegar.

Nice info.👍. I’ve also heard rubbing eggs with mineral spirits helps to preserve for 1year without refrigeration. Have you ? Just wondering if that was true 🤷♀️
@SirenaSpades2 жыл бұрын
@@notsurewhatscookin8691 Yes, I have done this, it's common to do here in Northern Maine and up in NB, Canada, you still put the mineral spirit eggs in the fridge (or cold cellar), they will last 9 months or so, you can always do the float test to check. Another way is to do pickled eggs - and there are many ways to do that, you can look up recipes. You can also just freeze eggs, by breaking open each egg, and dropping open each egg into a ice tray, once frozen, put them in a zip lock and make more as desired.

You have an amazing amount of food stored. By the way, the pasta should be stored in a clear plastic storage bin because mice or rats can chew through the paper boxes. I saw a video for making non-toxic mice/rat poison using one third each of flour, sugar and baking soda, rolled into balls. That will protect your food that's not in plastic or cans because rodents will eat that first and it kills them.
@joyfullythriving2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip!
@debhouckscraftycottage Жыл бұрын
Wish I had that mouse/rat recipe a year or two ago when we had a major problem with mice. I also store my extra pasta in one of the white buckets. Anything not in a jar or can that is "stockpile" pantry vs. everyday pantry goes in the buckets. That said, I DO shop the buckets before making my grocery list. I have a white bucket for Rice, one for Ramen Noodles ('cause we bought a huge box of them at one point), one for dry beans, one for flour & sugar (there are only 2 of us and I don't like to store as much of those, plus I have some flour and sugar in those No. 10 cans).
@isabelpimentel1415 Жыл бұрын
Do you use any liquid to be able to form a ball??
@Cynthea_Lee Жыл бұрын
@@isabelpimentel1415 just enough water to make em pasty, anything else can go rancid if the rats don't eat all the balls you make. If you don't want to make the balls you can put the same ingredients in small snack baggies and lay them around (they will chew through the baggies), OR buy some dollar tree food containers, cut a hole in the side of them and put the powder mixture in those. Another mixture is cornmeal (jiffy is best because it's sweet), and baking soda 1-1 ratio's, adding sugar later if they are ignoring them, for other items in your pantry. PS 1 place the majority of the bait along walls, and in dark areas, with the smaller amounts actually near the food, if the food is in well lit and well traveled areas. Rodents travel along the walls, and they would rather be in the dark areas, and will mostly avoid well lit, and traveled areas unless they are getting hungry, and or bold because they are feeding young in a nest. PS 2 what kills the rodents is the baking soda, they can't burp, and baking soda makes gas. BUT baking soda is harmless to cats, dogs, and small children making this bait safe to have around them.

Thanks for the tour. I have been canning for over 10 years so it is interesting to see what other people can. This year I was able to can some new things since we had a great garden year. They included pizza sauce, sloppy joe sauce and BBQ sauce. I learned not to waste green tomatoes. If you cook them down with vinegar and some garlic and then blend them it makes a great sauce for on burritos, etc. Also if you grow zucchini you can make them into pickles just like cucumbers. You can also shred or chunk zucchini and can it with pineapple juice to make a mock pineapple. I also canned homemade cranberry sauce with discount cranberries after thanksgiving last year. Just some ideas for you. I have never made cowboy candy but I would like to give it a try.

I ripen green tomatoes in my root cellar, but I have also put them right in my salsa batch before and canned them up when I haven't had enough. But preferably, they easily ripen with no problem in a cool dark place, enclosed - I use a crate fully lined and covered with either cardboard or newspaper, with at least one reddening tomato, but I have heard you can put a banana in with them, the enzymes ripen them.

I rinse then slice firm green tomatoes, put the slices on cookie trays and freeze for several hours..then put 6-8 frozen slices per freezer bags. When ready to eat, dont thaw them, just rinse while frozen, dip in flour or bread crumbs, do salt and pepper or any batter combo...and fry. MMM. Can do same with squash and zucchini. Quick side dishes option.

Yes, indeed! I have canned applesauce before...but with the price of apples lately, it has been cheaper to buy it! If I can find a good deal on apples, I will can some myself.
@SirenaSpades2 жыл бұрын
@@joyfullythriving I do think it might be cheaper to buy like you're doing, unless you have orchards like I am fortunate to have. It seems silly to go to the trouble do to the work to put it up after buying fresh apples at the store :)

This is a great tour! We actually keep a bunch of applesauce too. It is for our donkeys. I just did a pantry org tour and my goal this year is to preserve more from our garden so we have a stock pile of healthy food. Water is a great tip- perfect to use your empty jars. You need a 5 gallon bucket plastic wrench to remove the bucket lids. It's a special tool ;) Your pantry looks great! I canned 29 quarts of applesauce in September, I am in northern Maine so we have lots of apples, but it looks like it would take your family no time to work through them lol I have a Saucemaster so it makes quick work of it, it works good on tomatoes, too.

Just to reiterate what others have said, that date is the best by not the expiration date (you mentioned it with the olives and the can says best by). As long as the can isn't damaged and it isn't bulging then it'll basically last forever. Smell it first as that is your best guide. Honey lasts forever. They found some in a tomb in one of the pyramids and found it was still good. Same goes with pure maple syrup. BTW once you get your stockpile to where it's "like having your own grocery store", you have to be mindful of replenishment. My wife constantly forgets to let me know she's taken things until they're empty which defeats the purpose.
@joyfullythriving2 жыл бұрын
Yes! I am regularly restocking and adding...but that is an excellent reminder!

It is so true. I opened a jar of peanut butter last week (expired 2017) that is perfect. Barely had oil spots on the top. I am in a cold environment, your results may vary.. but Alaska Prepper, another channel, does a lot of tests right on the channel opening stored food that's perfectly fine. My theory is manufacturers stamp the food just so people will toss it and they can sell more. I can remember when cans never had dates at all.

Since you have such a big family, it would be beneficial to invest in a pressure canner and can your own meat. It’s so easy to throw meals together with home canned ground beef and chicken. Liesa at Sutton Daze (KZbin) had so many how to videos.

How do you keep track of the experation dates on all items, especially food
@joyfullythriving11 ай бұрын
Everything you see are things we use regularly so I came continually going down to get things from these shelves to use. But once or twice a year, I do go down and look through things to make sure I am staying on top of it. And when I get new items, I make sure to put them in the back so I am always using the oldest first. These things help me stay on top of the expiration dates.

Just be careful of the weight. I started in an upstairs room when my son moved out. I put two five shelf racks and had a ton of canned goods. There is a limit to how much the floor can hold, which I believe is 300#/sqft. It adds up quick with canned food.

First thing I read, when preppers has open shelves, what if , a earthquake took place , then what ? I know a few preppers who has a board going across the shelves to hold in the glass jars with food in them. Normally in my Region we don't have earthquake , but back in 2008, we had an 5.2 earthquake and shook everything. Just something to think about !! *Providence Prepper from Utah, they have a lot of information on this topic and more* !!! I keep hearing ( not sure how true it is , wait and see ) *For the next 2 years, it will be harder to buy food , it might be hard to find the food at the stores* .
@joyfullythriving2 жыл бұрын
A good point, Debbie. Fortunately, we live in the Midwest where earthquakes do not happen. But if it was even a slim possibility, I agree that the shelf with boards for my canning jars would be an excellent thing to do. And as for the next 2 years, we shall certainly see...but I think it is wise to stock up while we can now!

Awesome tip about storing water and unused ball jars that you use for canning! Going to keep that in mind really great tip. I love the shells your father-in-law bills you. I would love some just like that but I would like to put at least a half an inch lip on each of the shows just in case you have a small earthquake things have a tendency of moving and that little small little lip is going to keep the jars from actually toppling out of your shows. But if you don't live under or near where you get earthquakes that's something you don't have to worry about.
@joyfullythriving Жыл бұрын
Agreed! I have come to really love the shelves too. I think the lip idea is a great one. Thankfully, earthquakes are not at all likely for me (blizzards yes, and losing water yes, but earthquakes no!). If anyone were to build them, the extra edge is a great idea. I'm glad you found the water idea helpful. It is so simple but so brilliant, that I love sharing it!

@joyfullythriving Жыл бұрын
I know it can be difficult, especially with inflation increasing for all of us. I do have a video of how to stockpile for only $5 a week. Yes, sometimes it means switching around what we are buying too, but it can be done - even one extra box or can at a time adds up! Here are some of my tips and resources for stockpiling with only $5 a week, and if that seems overwhelming, try one extra item at a time. We all have to start somewhere! kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJDRZqKhaM2AeZo
