MUSHA really is worth the price of entry. It's such a beautifully balanced game and has ageless aesthetics and style. A good tip for beginners is to have your options set to 'reverse', power up the blue special weapons and put the ship speed up to 5. The section in Stage 4 or 5 where you first encounter a flying battleship at high speeds and the music switches up in tandem.. that's one of the rare moments in video games for me where the synergy between the elements of game, visuals and music bring on intense euphoria. This is only heightened by using headphones and cranking the volume right up. It's fucking *magical*.

This game was pretty obscure back in days. It came out when people were already getting tired of shmups, looked "weird" and had a weird name too. So, it went largely unnoticed. I had a chance to buy it for $20 a number of times, and didn't. Back when I got into Genesis emulation in the late 90's, I finally played it based on Internet advice and it quickly became on of my favorite Genesis games. Amazing graphics and sound, especially for an early Genesis game and plays great. Aged very gracefully. Compile definitely made some of the best shumps of all time, especially if you consider their entire body of work. Space Megaforce was one of my SNES favorites too.

It reminded me of that Macross game (Scrambled Valkyrie) on Super Famicom which seems to be as chaotic, yet manageable like Musha is. If I remember correctly, you can play it in such a way that you can actually get enemy ships to join your side and fight for you. I've never heard of any other shmup do something like that. It's interesting.

Ohh, I am *so* jealous that you have a physical copy of this game. ^.^ That aside, great job on the review; I really love how you pick games that don't always get a lot of attention but are well worth playing. You're totally right about the soundtrack, too. The Super NES gets the lion's share of attention when it comes to 16-bit music, but the Genesis had nice audio as well. M.U.S.H.A. was one of it's best.

I LOVED this game as a late teen. I had several import systems then. Like the Neo-Geo, Pc-engine duo...anyways for the duo was "Spriggan" which was very similar. Was that also made by the same developer? Spriggan Mk II, was amazing, as well but did not have the MUSHA feel to it. Amazing review.

I'm assuming that you used the Retron 5 to capture footage for this. Did you get the music straight from the game? When I play it on the Retron 5 the music sounds "off". Some of the sound channels are practically muted so that the music sounds flat, which annoys the hell outta me, cuz MUSHA's soundtrack is one of the best things about the game. I noticed that you like your ship really slow. I thought I liked my ships slow! I also noticed that you really like the Free Roaming options. I prefer the 3-Way. The laser is also my favorite weapon. And I feel the opposite in regards to the myriad of weapons that most Compile shooters offer. Games like Gun-Nac, Blazing Lasers, Space Megaforce, etc, just have numbered weapons 1-8 and I always lose track of which weapons correspond to each number. But that's just me. As a kid I actually had the Mega Drive version, Aleste, but now I have the American version. Other than text they are exactly the same. MUSHA is one of my all-time favorite shooters by far! It has a ton of nostalgic value for me, but I think it holds up really well and is the best shooter on the Genesis--even better than Thunder Force IV. Glad to see you give this game some love!
@Cannotbetamed17 жыл бұрын
I did use the Retron. The intro and the beginning of the first stage (where you can hear the sound effects) are from that recording, then I switched to tracks I downloaded after that. I didn't actually read the game manual until I was a good ways into the game, so all that time I was at speed 1... I didn't know I could pause the game and change it >.> And formation changes were accidental.

I also dig Truxton or Zero Wing.
