Join us for part two as we paddle our canoe from Wawa to the Dog river. We hike up the trail that leads to one of Lake Superiors hidden gems - Denison Falls. A place that Bill Mason used to visit. What an amazing place it is to see. We catch and cook fish along the way and camp on sandy beaches along Superiors Northern Shore.

I enjoyed both of your Lake Superior videos. I had the great good fortune to do quite a few kayaking trips with Naturally Superior Adventures paddling almost all of the Canadian shoreline, over several years. We camped at the Dog River and did the hike to the falls. Another trip we stayed at that same beach campsite, although water levels were much higher so the beach was narrow. It's a spectacular lake, but sadly age and it's related infirmities have prevented me from returning. I have a lot of good memories. It's wonderful that you are just really beginning many years of exploration.

@@CanoeTheNorth, have encouraged people for years to go spend time on it, or near it. It has incredible energy. Maybe you are aware of this, but there is a video and accompanying book called Superior, Under the Shadow of the Gods. Great read and video. It's an older video production so by today's standards ,not that great, but has really good historical and geological information. Book is still available to purchase, but not the video. But thanks to the wonders of KZbin, it's online, so if you have time it's worth a watch. Regards. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oqDJiIaKlq5mY80

Nice trip guys! Too funny, when we paddled Superior PP, we took off from Naturally Superior as well and went to Denison Falls and back. Only difference is we went in the beginning of May. Not a single soul, but we had to wear dry suits and deal with freezing temps. I've been to Denison Falls a second time since and it is always impressive. Ironically my wife who is scared of heights, didn't climb the vertical pitch and stayed back with the dog and missed the upper falls.

That’s funny!!! I would love to see the falls in spring. I’m sure it was really impressive. No doubt you would have had the whole lake to yourself. We happened to be there on the Canada day long weekend during covid so I doubt it’s ever been busier. We were planning to do Pukasaw but unfortunately it wasn’t open when we were there. I’m assuming that’s what you did your second trip?!? Looking forward to your videos!

@@CanoeTheNorth Ah, no wonder it was busy! No, this time we paddled the White River to Pukaskwa. The second time we saw Dension Falls was many years ago in the summer. It was a bad year (bad weather) and water was extremely high. Denison was pumping! (Ironically when we went in May, the Falls was small! lol)

Thanks very much Tom. I normally get it in the states but obviously the borders closed now so that’s not an option. I did see that you can order it on Amazon in Canada. Shipping was expensive but this seasoning is worth it I think. I’ve had multiple people that really didn’t like trout or salmon try it with this seasoning and now they love it. As far as Lake Superior goes what a place. It’s a really amazing place. It really feels like your in another world. Thanks for watching. If you get the spice let me know what you think. I’d love to hear your opinion.

@@CanoeTheNorth that’s awesome. I’ll have to look for it. Salmon and trout are my favorite fish to eat. I grew up fishing for Lakers almost exclusively in winter and summer. I live in a border town now. Hopefully this Covid business goes by soon and things return to normal. I’m adding the spice to my list of things to look for stateside when we are able to travel once again. I’m a part time fishing guide in my area and do quite a few shore lunches each season pre Covid. I’m always looking for new elements to add to my outdoor cooking game. If you and Ashley ever decide to come up this way again to the Atikokan, Fort Frances area, I’d love to take you guys fishing for a day or two. Let’s change Ashley’s mind on eating fish!!!! Cheers. in Algonquin if you need to spend an extra day due to being wind bound , with the park being booked so full what do you do? you have to make it to your next booked destination ? do the parks leave some extra campsites open incase of unexpected stayovers?
@CanoeTheNorth
@CanoeTheNorth 3 жыл бұрын
Well I have to say that this is one of my biggest issues with parks that have designated camping. Algonquin, and even parks like pukasaw on Lake Superior make it hard to deal with weather. First of all I do believe that Algonquin always leaves one site free on most lakes for that reason. Before we book we do our best to try and find lakes that are less popular to make it easier to deal with delays. We always carry an in reach and I can message someone in my family (normally my brother) to see what lakes have open sites along our route. We have paddled in late evening if we need to when the wind dies down. At the end of the day we try to stick to schedule but sometimes weather has other plans. We never compromise on our safety. If it means we have to camp at a non designated campsite to stay safe then that’s what we will do. It’s always a tough call but our safety and others is always first, no matter the schedule.

No life jackets on your dogs while on big bodies of waters? We sail and have canoed for many years. Our dogs are never without life jackets. We don't risk them drowning.
@CanoeTheNorth
@CanoeTheNorth 2 жыл бұрын
Hello. We have life jackets for both our dogs and they always used to wear them. We found though that the nylon life jackets would give them hot spots like crazy. On a multi week canoe trips where they are always getting wet we have found that they simply could not wear them without getting sores. I know not all dogs are the same and some are more resistant to skin sores. We have had to stop trips because of this. Our dogs safety and comfort are too priority to us.
@fireflyrocks1
@fireflyrocks1 2 жыл бұрын
@@CanoeTheNorth Understand. We're boaters, sail. motor and canoe and always have our two dachshunds with us. We've learned that the combination of heat and wet skin, which is almost unavoidable on trips , can be problematic. The danger of a cold , large body of water puts the fear of Jesus in me.. That was my concern. Your dogs are lovely and they sure like the adventures. Be safe, be well.
