One of the simpler ways to explain the excellent sharpness is that it's an L series prime lens while the 70-200mm is an L series zoom lens. Prime lenses are famous for their sharpness, and the flat plane of focus of that macro lens combined with it having fewer moving elements inside give it a strong performance. Also, you seem like a very charismatic person with your bubbly personality!

I was not signed in when I found you. After 10 minutes of your video, I had to grab my device and sign in to comment and give you 10 thumbs up! You are witty, real, and informed. Your delivery is perfect! I have been deep diving into the 100mm since I decided that I like to shoot nature and food. My sadness was that I would need another lens for photography, but no I don't...thank you for your amazing review of my new product. I can't wait to receive it and get started.

Both the 100mm macro and the 70-200 that you showed, has built-in IS, Image Stabilization, you means you don't have to strictly adhere to the focal length/Shutter speed rule. You can at least 2 stops of stabilization, so 1/25 sec for 100mm and about 1/50 sec for the 70-200mm would work if you keep the camera still. That was important to mention.

Thank you for the great video. I took up photography when I retired and focused on wildlife and sports which is mostly telephoto. So, I am now dipping my toes into portrait photography and researching lenses. I was recommended an 85mm by a friend, luckily I already own the 100mm L 2.8 Macro, so the 85 won't be a useful addition to my kit, guess i will look at purchasing a 35mm instead.

Thanks for the video but I can't agree with some of your conclusions. I own this lens and it's "OK" for portraits but obviously the 200mm at f2.8 will have better Bokeh and compression than 100mm at f2.8. The 135mm f.20 will obviously destroy the 100mm f2.8 for portraits. This requires no explanation. Similarly, the 85mm with a much wider aperture will give much shallower depth of field and creamier bokeh. This lens will work as a portrait lens in a pinch but acting like it's in any way comparable to the 135 f2 or 85 1.4 is silly.
@rainerwunderlich8023
@rainerwunderlich8023 Жыл бұрын
Agree to prefer the 85 as well as 135 2.0. Further on, 135 2.0 with 1.4 extender gives you a proper 190 2.8 .Greets

The way I understand it is that Lenses have different qualities at different focusing distances. One of the problems is field curvature. A lens may curve the surface in focus at one end of the focusing range.If it happens at infinity, it's a tragedy. For example imagine that you are shooting a view far away from you so that you just focus at intinity and expect to have everything in focus, but instead the edges are past infinity and blurry. So lenses are designed to have flat surface in focus at infinity. Then as you focus closer, the edges of the field curve in or out. At most of the range it's fine, but at some close distance it becomes ridiculous. Macro photography has that problem that it's so close, that this kind of distortion really gets out of control. For that reason, manufacturers add a complication to the design - a so called floating element, which is an optical piece that moves at a different speed compared to the rest of the lens when focusing. A lens with a floating element is usually called 'FL' or 'macro'. You don't need a macro lens to do portraits, but if it happens to be optically good overall, then why not? IMHO the best optics for portraits are not well defined, because every artist has their style and look. For example the optimal optics for portrait seem to be 135mm, because they're the sharpest wide open lenses that you can buy with honest money. Samyang 135 1.8 AF is amazing wide open and it has a huge, 75mm aperture.The thing is that not everyone wants to shoot at 135. You need to take a couple steps back and it's more shaky and gives you a distant and flat-ish feel in a portrait. In a way it's too vanila in it's look. I'm personally into 135mm on full frame, but on a crop sensor I prefer the look of 50-80mm in most pics, but of course it's up to the artist.

Funny video :) I have both lenses, and really love them both, and I agree. The 100mm is a really fantastic lens.The compression from 100mm is great, and it is very sharp.One thing you said was that the best focal length for portrait is from 85-105. I would say 85-135.I have a Zeiss 135 Apo Sonnar f2. This is an amazing lens for portraits. It is manual focus, but insane sharp, and blur the background in a way that is soooooo nice.I also like how it looks on a portrait. I even use 50mm for portraits, but more like you could see their arms. But as I say. Funny video, and you have a very nice way to explain things. Like it!!!

@jamesjackson4264
@jamesjackson4264 4 жыл бұрын
Both.
@Thehappyfilmcompany
@Thehappyfilmcompany 4 жыл бұрын
yes, both. "Classic Portrait Length" is referring to the lenses we're choosing to shoot with and it has nothing to do with the full frame/crop sensor of the camera. That's an issue of the camera body and what it's able to capture. The lenses can go on all different kinds of cameras and the resulting images will look different of course, but the lens themselves are what I'm talking about. Traditionally that 80-105 kind of range is a 'portrait lens' range. Not a rule though. I totally shoot portraits with 35mm and 50mm too!

LOL ... loose lots of light due to many glass???? what about glass quality and type of glass elements? Yes less glass is usually sharper, but what does that have to do with taking picture in low light? 3 factors exposure/aperture/iso (camera sensor generation/Pixel size)

Yeah,.. I saw that too. 😂 50% of her "explanation" about distortion, focal length, shutter speed, the "tunnel" and aperture are plain wrong, almost nonsense. 🥴
@Metaloutofcontext
@Metaloutofcontext Жыл бұрын
Agreed, seemed mostly credible to that point but that explanation is far from accurate. The tunnel analogy doesn't make sense as the light gathering power is determined by the aperture and assuming she is comparing the 100mm f/2.8 to a 70-200 f/2.8, it's the same and both are less than an 85mm 1.8 or better.

Thanks for this video. I've been debating whether or not I need an 85mm or not. Appreciate your input and sub'd : )

Thanks for the sub! Have you decided to get the 85mm yet? Personally, as I said in this video I'm down with the 100mm. I find it's way more versatile. I'm curious what you've chosen :) Chamonix

The 85mm portrait prime is pretty useless if you shoot pictures of children or pets. The Canon 85mm f/1.8 has a minimal focus distance of 2.8 feet; that is so far away. On a full frame, that means your imaginary picture frame around your subject is 14.2" by 9.5" or larger. You can get even closer with the 50mm f/1.8, which focuses at 1.5 ft, giving you a frame of 13" by 8.4". In fact, you can fill more of the frame with a 50mm prime than a 85mm portrait prime. If you've ever tried to compose a good portrait of a child or a pet's face with an 85mm, you'll find it very limiting. That's why I ended up getting rid of my 85mm. Use a macro if you plan on taking pictures of children or pets.

Totally I relate. I love photographing kids up close and my favorite lenses for that are 35, 50 and 100. The 85 is beautiful but certainly a lot trickier :) Thanks for commenting! Chamonix

Very charming but quite a bunch of nonsense in the video. 1) Both are 2.8 lenses, so same light intake. Ot s a lens my dear. It bends light ... 2) There is such a thing as image stabilization and the 1/focal lenght rule is only a rule of thumb. 3) Classic Portret focal lenght is 50, 70 to 85 mm. 100mm is on the lenghty side: background flattening from tele lens characteristics is kicking in. And to get full head, torso or body shots you have to get some distance. Which can be an issue in busy environments or tight spaces when zooming with your feet isn t alleays an option. 4) Don t forget to mention to use it on a full frame camera. With a cropped camera you re looking at a 1600 mm focal lenght lens, which is truly a tele option. It s a brilliant lens - I do own and shoot it myself - from a cropped 77D and a full frame R8. But compare it to it s true competitors in Portret: the nifty fifty 1.8 and any decent 70 or 85 mm 2.8 lense.

So I am not even a rookie yet but coins arw whybI spent the money to take great photos. Light seams to be my enemy here. I need a great photo of a near perfect Lincoln Cent. It has an error thats beautiful. A golden wave like a ribbon of coin material coming from the inner rim out and over the letters to the middle of the coin. If I can get this I should be able to get great photos of any coin. I would love to have a sorta 3d type photo that shows the ribbon wave coming out and over like I see it thru microscope. So Light is my enemy besides settings. I am trying auto but no satisfied. Can you give me settings manually to start with. Light? Have an LED lamp I put saran wrap over the light lense. This coin is shinny clean and reflections are killing me. Light ideas please? I know its long but here to learn. Thanks so much from a Dad with 4 daughters. I cant even consider myself as good as a rookie yet. Any help would be loved. From North Central part of Eastern Washington. In the mountians of out Great State.

Hey you know how they say that a picture is worth a thousand words? Like especially with visually oriented people , like oh i don't know... Photographers, maybe? Thanks for the effort though....

When you see dots on your image, it does not come from dirt on the lens. It means your sensor is dirty and has to be cleaned. 🥴 But don't do this yourself! ☝🏼😦

Lol, it's time to upgrade to the RF lenses! The RF 100mm f/2.0 macro lens is coming out later this year and it's going to be an interesting lens.

Lots of word salad here. You need to be more technical when you speak. You say big lens several times but implying different meanings. Good video tho.

Sorry, I'm a boring old nerd, but I have to say: there is no way that even a single speck of dust laying on the glass is visible on the photo. You can only take a macro photo by moving the camera back using an extension tube. The closer an object is to the lens, the further the distance between the lens and the camera increases! Photographing specks of dust on the outer surface of the lens is effectively impossible. Small smudges are possible on the image when something comes into contact with the digital camera sensor or on the surface of the film if dust settles in the sensitive gel during film development. For sureThe quality worsens when there are greasy finger prints on the glass surface or... if you sprinkle flour on the lens before frying it, and merging beaten eggs themselves don't help. My advice is: never touch the surface of the lens if you want to keep the anti-reflective treatment of the lens safe. If you really have to clean your expensive lens, blow and brush or better just yet only blow air... But DO NOT BREATHE on your lens glass!!! After removing dust from the lens, you can clean the surface with a specific liquid from a reliable manufacturer AND use disposable soft wipes made of non-woven fabric, usually made of lint-free silicone. DO NOT use microfiber cloths or other stupid dusty rags like the ones you find at the bottom of an old box, great stuff only if you want to sand away the expensive treatment on your expensive lens... AND... DO NOT USE t-shirts, socks, towels, sweaters, wool gloves, rugs, blankets, Brazilian jute coffee bags... and so on... RESPECT your photography lens almost as much as you respect people and pets!
