CANON 1DX Mark III | 120fps and 5.5k Raw Test Footage

In this first look video with the Canon 1DX Mark iii, I test out the video features of the camera. Specifically looking at the electronic image stabilization, 5.5k raw video, 4k 10 bit 422, and the 120fps slow motion.
I will be comparing the Canon 1DX Mark iii vs Canon C200, and the Canon 1DX Mark iii vs Canon C500 Mark ii in future videos so keep an eye out for those in future videos!

Another OC video guy here - Always look forward to your content! Subbed some time back - I got my 1DX M3 about 4 months ago and have really enjoyed the performance from it. Dependability, battery life and form factor are great. 9/10 my clients can’t tell the difference between this and when we shoot on a RED or other high end cine camera. I have really come to the point where I believe the only people that concern themselves about 1 or two more stops of DR are people like us on the production end. By the time footage is graded and the edit is done I feel like nobody but us seems to notice or care. That realization has caused me to “downsize” from heavily rigged out setups with a 1st AC to a production kit that has a 1DX3 on an RS2 using DPAF for 80% of the work I used to schlep all that other equipment around for. You know what - my clients don’t notice a difference and it’s not like I don’t have demanding clients, many are international consumer electronics companies who have pretty high standards especially for their broadcasts spots. The only area I wish the 1DX3 was just a little better on is it’s RS ... but I’m typically not doing any crazy whip pans or other moves where it’s been a problem but it’s always something I consider during shot choreography. Regarding the 10bit H265 - it’s what I shoot in 90% of the time and the new Mac M1s have dedicated hardware for HEVC / H265 and they edit smooth without needing a proxy workflow if anyone is interested. Fantastic man. I shot on clog once i got the 1dx3 and was surprised at how hard it was for my imac to edit the 10bit 422 codec. I even have a very beefy machine too! Subbed.

Didn't know that I couldn't use 5.5k footage directly to Final Cut Pro X or Premiere. What program do I use to import/export video files so I can edit smoothly in Final Cut Pro? Do I use Davinci?

At the time of writing this comment you can use it natively in final cut and davinci. Premiere will probably have an update soon to allow it to work natively as well.

Eisi I think if you’re primarily a photo shooter there isn’t enough of an upgrade to justify to much added expense of the body plus cf express but for serious video work, yeah it’s worth it.

Hi Griffin, nice video, well done! Curious about how hard it is to edit that RAW codec, let’s say with an iMac Pro? Do you feel the need to transcode to ProRes or just edit straight away with the RAW footage? Greetings

The raw from both cameras gives a tough time to my imac pro. I would reccomend a proxy workflow. However, if you edit in final cut or resolve your experience may be better. I am a premiere editor and it is not as well optimized as those programs

I think that's just underexposure for the 120p shots? The thing at 4:42 is something going wrong in NLE translation though...

This is the reason why I like to use my cameras on a few unpaid shoots first before I use them for client work. There is definitely some noise in the 120p in 10 bit 422, specifically when you underexpose and push the shadows up. Also, I was shooting at higher ISO's as the sun had just went down and there was still an ND filter on the camera that I had been using for the clips we filmed when the sun was still out.

looks to me that is regular sensor noise during low light shooting... i'm anxious to see how much better the 1DX3 performs over the 1DX2 in the same situation. Seems far better than 1DX2 lowlight video footage. But, we'll see.

I shot some super fast action using 35mm 2.0 IS lens about 3-4 feet from subjects and the output and color science was jaw dropping. Oh Raw runs without breaking a sweat on the new Mac Studio raw through resolve or Final Cut Pro(using the canon Raw plugin)

Calilookbook Real Estate Photography & Videography there is a mode in 4K 60p with a 1.3 crop that has autofocus, and there is also a mode that has uses full frame but it loses autofocus. In 5.5k raw mode it is full frame in 60p but it loses autofocus as well

Question, did you have a problem with 120fps LOG? I was unable to use LOG 120fps, however 120fps without LOG worked fine.

I think not just that this would be a worth while test but probably will the 1 DX Mk3 at 5.5 K Raw seems to me the perfect B camera to the C 500 and with Apple releasing this year the more powerful M1X chip in their new Macbook pro 14/16..,,the video grading of this footage should get definitely easier

I actually love the motion JPEG and find it is in line with most other compressed 4K codecs. However, the h.265 at the time of writing this is not well optimized for most NLE’s. I suspect that will change soon with some software / computer hardware updates

The footage is clean, it is mostly youtube compression and where there is noise it is because I was shooting at high ISO. Keep an eye out for my next video this week. I will be posting some 1dx mark iii footage that is more vibrant and saturated.

I agree. There is a lot less visible noise but youtube encoding wasn't too kind to this video. That being said, I did shoot at some higher ISO's and push the shadows up to get the exposure where it needed to be.
