I am showing large resolution files to prove that Canon 300mm f2.8 L IS mark1 and Canon extender 2x mark3 at wide open aperture show some amazing results.

Excellent review! I am getting the same (sharp) results with my 400mm f/2.8 III paired with a x2 extender ! According to which nothing beat "real life" shots and let's forget about all these "technical" tests trying to prove the contrary. An extender does indeed increase the focal length but it also intensify the primary lens quality...or defects. If one is dealing with a quality lens and one can handle the loss iof one or two stops, a good lens and a good extender can bring terrific good results!
@markmolker8159

@Csab Auto-focusing will depend of your camera body and how far it can go down the aperture scale before "to loose" focusing. As an example the 1D, 5D and 7Dmk2 bodies should be OK all the way down to f/8.0 - As a general rule an extender will loose 1 to 2 stops and will tend to lower the picture quality. Therefore, the higher the quality of your primary lens is, the better will be your results once you have added an extender. As a rule, a f/2.8 lens on one of the bodies I mentioned above should give you (with an extender of the same brand as your lens) very good results with auto focusing all the way down to f/8.0 (which should be ample margin considering that your aperture for an f/2.8 lens + x2 extender would be f/5.6...)

Great review! This was an absolute necessary review since most reviews on the x2.0 and even the x1.4 extenders were pretty negative but you proved it's certainly possible to take great pictures with the extenders.

I use my canon 300mm f2.8 is on a 7d and occasionally use a 1.4 extender. The old 500mm f4 is now up in the loft and not used anymore. The results between using or not using are negligible, once light starts dropping off you'll need to up the iso or slow down the shutter speed.

How is AF speed and accuracy with the 2x on moving subjects; in ample light vs low light. I think this is the main sticking point and it would be nice to have a comment to that effect and ideally a follow up video perhaps. Tnx for sharing.

I use 70-200mm f/2.8 IS mk2 L with 2x extender with 1D X , and i have to say quality loss is minimal for the extra reach (if you do same controlled test in studio), but on the open having cheaper version of 400mm is big advantage, especially when you shooting wildlife, sport, or airshows. It's well worth it to invest money in extender, eaven in one that isn't Canon, YONGNUO Extender EF 2x III thats what i use and it costed me half the price of Canon.

I have been using it to take photos of birds and photos, with great degrees of success. Having said all that, I am about to pick up the 300mm f/2.8 IS this Friday so wich me luck :)

Here is a question for you! Do you think the new 100-500mm L lens would be as sharp as the old 300mm f 2.8 IS lens with the 1.4x III on it? Do you think the 100-500 would be sharper? I’m debating both options as a travel bird lens. Thanks!!

I would like to help, but I never had that lens in my hand so I can't say. After many years in photography and moving heavy equipment around, I prefer lighter lenses and I am able to tolerate a bit worse sharpness than superior.

Hi Tome, great review with amazing sharpness of 300/2.8! I am using the 300/2.8 L IS MK1 on a Canon 1Dx with EX 2x MK1 for animals and nature. The sharpness is far way from your results, even with wide open aperture! Do you have any recommendations? Thanks in advance!
@TomeRodrigo
@TomeRodrigo 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the great feedback. My only recommendations would be probably 2x extender mk3 version..also I am not sure about 1Dx but 5d mark2 has an extreme sharpness capacity (much better for example than 5d mk3) so some cameras are better in high iso performance but their overall pixel sharpness is a bit less in low iso then some older cameras from the same brand. It is just my opinion of what I tested for myself. I don't want to offend people with new high-end cameras.
@mooffline5831
@mooffline5831 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot for quick and honest answers. Maybe the camera resolution is one issue (1Dx: 18.1MP, 5Dii: 24MP), but there must be something else. For my shootings with 1Dx, 300/2.8+EX 2x i I usually use a tripode. For animals (especially herons and birds) I operate at distances of approx. 50-80 meters with max. aperture 5.6 at 1/1000 or faster. So I have to crop a lot with loss of resolution! Do you recommend higher shutter speeds with increased ISO or vice versa to improve sharpness? What are your preferred camera settings to have optimal sharpness? I am quite not confident with my results and would like optimize my settings to bring out the best of my setup. Thanks for your appreciated feedback and greetings! Moritz
@TomeRodrigo
@TomeRodrigo 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry Moritz, I found your comment just now, as KZbin has not notified me that you have left a comment. I mean shutter speed is a must at some point if the bird is moving fast and higher iso is essential if the higher shutter speed is not possible with lower iso. I must say I am very lucky that 5d km2 is very sharp and I also buy just very sharp lenses so my results are always to my expectations even if I do quite a huge crop. Of course, if I have a photo that is 5000 pixels in length and I crop it into 1600 pixels then I can only use it for web maybe. But even that small image is super sharp. I have seen with newer cameras (I don't know how it is these days, as I don't watch the market anymore) that new cameras had "more resolution" but less quality and full samples looked rubbish. That never happened to me with 5dmk2. Also, Nikon D800E had extreme results at that time.

I bought a used 300mm F2.8 IS recently along with the 5D MK IV (refurbished). This combination, with no extenders, works great! Unfortunately, together with the Canon 2x iii, and in low light, I do not find the images that good. Experimenting with my other options, I tried the 300mm/MK IV with my Tamron 1.4x and find the image slightly better IMO, but not outstanding. Again, my test shots are with not good lighting. I proceeded to try the 300mm on my 7D MK II with very good results. The bottom line is that I'm not sold on the 2x extender in low light. Perhaps it is best used in good light.

I am not a canon guy, so I can't comment on the specifics of canon cameras, however, when using teleconverters with my Nikon gear, Autofocus Fine tune adjustments are usually required. There also also been copy variation between teleconverters in the past.... not sure if this holds true for canon, but take from that what you will.

Did I hear right that you think the 5DII is sharper than the 5DIII? I have both cameras and only bought the 5DIII because my tethering port died on my 5DII. I always prefer the 5DII, I only use the mkIII in studio, partly because of upper body difficulties I’m very clumsy, but also because I know the mkII better. I’ve always thought it was for the latter reason I got better images, but I find that one sentence very interesting. Forgot the 100-400mm does not have autofocus with the 2x extender. I will still play with it but on a trip over to a park it was very tough to do tack sharp focus at max zoom on any birds. Wish I had tried the 1.4x instead. Plus the two stops of light loss really added up to much more grain in the pics in the early light. It would have to be full sun to get anything worthwhile.

With normal camera AF is working fine with lenses they have natural opening up to f5.6, so f2.8 with 2x extender will become f5.6; With 1x cameras, AF should be working up to f8 natural opening, so even f4 lenses with 2x extender should be autofocusing without problems on 1x cameras. Two, your 300mm f/4 be a 420mm f/5.6 with 1.4x or 600mm f/8 with 2x

Thanks my friend ... I use a 500f4 with a 1.4 tele....really great with my Canon 5dsr ...really great but at only 5 fps it was challenging but still amazing ...BUT I got a R5 and holy s---t...what performance ...45mp at12 fps or even 20 fps with unbelievable sharpness. beyond words . I also have a 300 2.8 CanonMK 1 and use a 1.4 regularly@420 f4 with Great ,great sharpness . I use the 300 when I don't want to carry the big 11 pound tank (500 f4) around ( I hand hold most of the time ). but wanted to see if what you tested would help me get 600 5.6 and have as good as my other setups ... with the R5 ill bet it just might be great ... hope so . Give me some feedback if you can (.. DURSOJR..instagram.. Jimmy Durso Jr. on Facebook .)Loved your video..just what I wanted to hear. Thanks again .

I am sorry I don't have this setup anymore so I don't remember it that much, but definitelly slower than 5-10 percent..at least 30 percent.

@@TomeRodrigo Thank you SOOO much my friend for taking the time.....no worries. ....I appreciate your help......wow 30% is slow.....I just ordered this set up.....If its too slow I will just use it with the 1.4x only.....was hoping I would get the extra reach at 2x......600mm F5.6 or 6.3 would be really nice for birding....anyway the lens is on its way.....hope I am not too disappointed. Thanks for your help. Cheers.

You would be better off using a crop camera with that lens. Extenders have their place but that extra glass will degrade the image and cause other problems.

Shutter speed on birds? I used a 70-200mm with 2x extender today. Tripod. shutter 400 and the whole thing is blurry.

Very nice review. But why you shoot wildlife with full frame camera? You are loosing a lot of detail than using 24mpx, 1.6 crop factor camera and get mach better magnification. Than you gone a see even much more details. Personally I will never shoot wildlife with full frame unless I am not in a zoo. I the real life you always need more magnification :)

You forgot about the 5dsr. Enough pixels to crop AND sharper because of the lack of AA filter.

hi guys today i am going to show you, how much of a review plonker i am, i will call these birds kingfisher and robin, these are plastecine/plastic moulded/clay, fake just like my review. maybe if i got out more i might actually capture the real thing.
@TomeRodrigo
@TomeRodrigo 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, they are plastic birds, is there any problem with it? Any person can see that. Even they are plastic there is some lovely structure where you can see the sharpness. As I didn't have a chance to photograph any live birds here around I have decided to do so this way. But I understand that not every person will be happy as some people have loads of expectations..No problem at all.

It is a better test than with a real bird because the subjects are stationary and it is very easy to compare crops vs. teleconverters, etc. thanks for an awesome video, very helpful for me!
Canon Teleconverter - or should you just crop your image?
