Canon 55-250 Lens - Field Test and Review (w/ Canon 90D)

I had the opportunity to test the Canon 55-255 zoom lens using the Canon 90D body. I have tested many lenses (Tamron, Sigma, Nikon, etc.) and many bodies (Canon, Nikon , Sony, etc.) over the years. This is a great combination capable of taking some tact sharp images ... fun to use!:)

I've owned this lens since the fall of 2015, and I love it! Super lightweight, nice and sharp, fantastic autofocus and a great zoom range; the equivalent of 88-400 mm! And although it isn't really a macro lens, it'll allow you to make some great close-up pictures of flowers and insects. Works only with APS-C (like the rebel models and the 70D, 80D, 90D, 7D-II). Now if anyone thinks of buying one, for your own sake make sure it's the STM version! There was an older version which wasn't anywhere near as good. It was cheaper, but much less sharp, and the autofocus didn't work as well. Luckily it's been quite a few years since it went out of production, so there might not be much risk of accidentally buying it new, but if you buy used, look out!

Ahhhh yes, great point related to STM!:) I have used both STM and non-STM lenses - STM lenses are the way especially related to video:). I also used the Nikon AF-S and AF-P lenses. The AF-P is similar to the Canon's STM - both are good/solid for video:).

I use this lens on my T6i, and it's awesome - especially the sharpness and image stabilization. For value for money, I don't think it can be beaten. I´ll be upgrading to the 90D in a few months: I can't wait!

I had that lens on my 77D. I was happy with it. The performance to price/weight ratio was great. One of the better crop lenses imo.

I just watched the Nikon 35mm review, ive bought a cheap d3200, now going to get the 35mm based on your review, I'm usually a Canon guy, I use mainly R6, R5, R3, just getting a few R lens for the line up, but I won't give up this lens for my 90d, good combination for travelling light

I got the same lenses also the 24 mm prime. I got some extension tubes for macro I use with the 55-250. That combo can focus less than an inch from the lense.

hi good day as usual very nice topic but i have a question about something else i use a nikon d5300 love it very much i don't hear much about it but i'm doing a few different types of photographs and i want to do some macro now the thing is i have a vivitar macro 5000 had it some years now never used it now i had to check out if its compatible first off because newer cameras use a flash sync current thats lower than older cameras i checked on the web a site for photo strobe trigger voltages it says the voltage is 6v i only have a pc sync cable with it i'm thinking of using an older flash shoe and rig up a connection to the flash do you think this is a wise move again thanks for any advice .

I was so caught up in the images that it did not click in my brain that it is winter and that your video is from a warmer season. Way to go capturing your audience. I sold my AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm 4.5-5.6 VR lens in 2019 when a new body I purchased came with the newer AF-P DX 70-300mm 4.5-6.3 VR lens. Now your video has me missing that 55-70 range. I decided to sell the 55-300mm AF-S lens for a few reasons. 1. The auto focusing on that lens is so loud. 2. It has a larger diameter. 3. It is a little heavier than the AF-P lens. Every ounce or gram matters to my petite arms. Lol! I do miss the 5.6 max aperture at full zoom, and the auto/manual focus & VR on/off switches on the side of the lens. Oddly enough, I kept the old AF-S 18-55mm lens and sold the newer one because I prefer the heavier weight of the older 18-55mm lens. Go figure that! I just did a test video with that old 18-55mm lens and boy is the focus motor LOUD. I rarely shoot videos though and mostly capture images with my two prime lenses. Have a great weekend!

Thanks for your post/feedback:). I can relate to the weight as well and good point regarding the 18-55. I suspect Nikon made a few modifications related to material over the years causing the newer lens to weigh less. Nonetheless, I was surprised by this lens - the build quality, resulting images, and price all fall into a good place. Regarding focus noise when shooting video - ahhh yes, I have experienced the same. The AF-P is Nikon's version of silent focus which works well. If you are using the older AF-S, the focus is loud and will hunt when shooting video:).

@@anonym0us980 Hi, I really do not use the 70-300 lens as I mostly shoot portraits and use my two prime lenses (35mm f1.8 and 50mm f1.8). What I can say for certain, is that the AF-P lens' motor is almost silent. No loudness when focusing like with the AF-S. This especially matters if you shoot video and the lens is refocusing during the recording.

The 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 STM is a good lens to have also. Both of these lenses can be had second hand at a good price. I have both and they’re excellent. Can’t go wrong with either 👍🏾

Mark I sent a sample of my work to the email address you gave me but I don't know if you ever got a chance to view it. It was a bulb exposure that I took more than 30 years ago using just 35 mm 200 Kodak film way before digital arrived. It was an exposure of my cousin in a shroud of light. I really hope you get to see it.the camera I was using was an old model called a Chinon and I don't even know if they make them anymore.

Hello Mark, just want a quick suggestion from you; I have two top-end crop sensor bodies. Which camera should I keep and which one should I sell? 1:) Canon 90d 2:) Nikon d500 Now the issue I'm facing is about choosing one between the two. Canon is with 55-250 non-stm lens and unfortunately for the nikon its only body without any lens. I tried many forums but no one answered.

That's for you to decide, man. They're both great cameras, but very different. Why not keep them both? Or ... if you don't have any lenses for the D500, maybe you should sell that one? Not much fun owning a camera with no lenses.

the 55-250 provides good versatility for various sporting events, however the aperture may limit light so you might need to increase the ISO:).

i have the canon 80d and i want some good lens for that camera i was told to get the 24-70 and the 16-35 but they're for full frame cameras but i have a crop sensor but they seem to take great pictures i want to get better but i'll buy lenses that will work with my 80d i don't want to be buying the wrong camera lenses. i only want a few lenses. i have 2 full frame lenses and no crop sensor lens but i'm trying to see what happens. i do this as a hobby So i'm not rich like that i paid 500 for the 80d camera body with no lenses and then i bought the 16-35 and the 50mm i took some nice pictures but i want to take sharp pictures everytime that's why i'm learning all of the camera modes to see which one i'm going to like. so can you tell me about the 17-55mm 24mm 10-18mm 55-250mm and the 18-135mm which one do i need to buy for the 80d

24 stm, 18-135 stm, 10-18 stm even this 55-250 stm are all fine and I like them. It depends on your needs. The most versatile is 18-135 and I have used it in most situations. From my point of view it has a solid ratio of zoom and image quality. I have STM version, but I would prefer newer nano USM version. All is quite the same except much better AF (2-4 times faster than STM).

@ I have the nano USM version, and I haven't noticed faster AF! As far as AF speed goes, nothing beats the 10-18 in my experience.

Your 16-35 and 24-70 aren't in any way wrong for the 80D! I've never tried them, but it's my understanding that they deliver excellent image quality. So if you buy Canon EF-S lenses, you probably won't get the same quality. So my recommendation is to keep the lenses you have and possibly add the 55-250 STM to your collection. I own all the EF-S lenses you mention, except the 17-55. I understand it's a very good lens, but also quite expensive. And I doubt it that it will surpass the lenses you already own. I think the best value for money is the STM "trinity": the 10-18, 18-55 and 55-250. They're also lightweight which is nice. But as I said, for you it'll probably be a step down in image quality, although they're not exactly bad. The 18-135 I only bought because I found on a special "weekend offer" at Canon's web shop for half the normal price, and I don't think it's worth the full price. The zoom range is fairly good, but not nearly as great as the 18-55 + 55-250 combo, it's rather heavy, and it's sharpness is only okay. Another lens to consider would normally be the Sigma 18-35 F1.8 Art which is superb. (The image quality always makes my jaw drop!) But the fact that you already own the Canon 16-35 probably makes it less relevant for you. (Although the aperture of F1.8 is really nice, as in lets in over twice as much light as F2.8).

It seems you could use a course in photography, where you get some personal guidance. It's impossible to give you advice without knowing exactly what you're doing. Like, how good or bad was the light when you took the pictures (super important question!), how good is your camera hand-holding technique, did you use a fast enough shutter speed, etc. etc.
