Canon 580exII - Setup for Master/Remote Trigger/Slave

2:07 After all these years, I finally realise while looking at this closeup of the LCD screen that when you switch from Master to Slave, the little zig-zag arrow icon actually changes direction! When set to Master, the arrowhead points away from the flash icon, and on Slave, it points towards it! So subtle I never noticed.

Thanks for this helpful video! My on-camera 580 ex II still flashes even though I set it to off. The slave is a 430 EX and it is flashing properly.

Thanks, I don't know what the programmer and designer used for simple logic or good common sense if you need more controls that might help? You did a great job, it would help the buyer a lot if Canon sent a CD or DVD explaining in simple common sense what we need to do to make it work? Thanks

Gary, I held my 580EX II up and tried following everything you did... could cycle through the groups though (A B or C) What could be preventing me from switching to a different group ? I'm using it with a 7D Mark II.

I have the godox Xpro c trigger and the Canon 580EXII speedlite and I followed all the steps and the light still won't sync to the trigger, not sure what exactly im doing wrong 🤷‍♀️

So you have to have a flash on the the camera in order to use any others off camera?

I've found out you don't if you have a shoe adapter or the right cable to plug into the flash. That way I can have off camera flash!

urgent question. I want to have two off camera flashes where one is the master and the second is the slave. The master will be triggered by a receiver on it from a trigger on the cam. Can the slave flash run based on the master flash even if the master flash isnt on the cam? I havent tried this before, so its new territory for me

Yes and no! Yes IF your receiver on master flash is connected on the bottom of the flash and not on the side where there is a PC socket. The master unit must be set on Manual mode and never on ETTL (if you leave it on ETTL it will not even fire while it's connected on the side and if it's connected on the bottom it will fire but always at constant power of 1/128). No IF you wish to use ETTL capabilities and again no if you don't plan to buy a trigger which will connect on the bottom hot shoe of the master flash (U can also hack the flash soldering the same wire which goes to center pin on the bottom...). Last note: slave flash unit must be set on Manual mode as well. Basically Canon gives you some infrared capabilities but also wants you to buy Canon products like the ST-E2 Speedlite infrared transmitter in order to control ETTL. If you go on manual you save money and you still can do your job.

The slaved flash can be set to Manual mode instead of TTL.

So I tried using the 580 as a slave and have my canon 40d's flash to trigger the speed light. But it isn't working. I put it to slave. But when my cameras flash goes off the speed light doesn't flash . Can anyone help meeee

The flash in the 40d can't Trigger the 580. You need a 7D, 7dmkii 5d and above to do that. Or use the 580 als a master and a second flash as a slave.

you need a flash with multiple slave settings i have the yongnuo 565 III and i can set it to SC SN S1 and S2 SC is what you would use with a master flash or a popup flash like the 7D (not40D) SN is the same but Nikon S1 IS WHAT YOU NEED, it will see your 40D's flash and flash along no matter what brand S2 IS ALSO WHAT YOU NEED its like the S1 but it ignores pre flashes (dont know for sure) i use S2 if i only use my own 40D (put a card in front of the popup flash so it doesnt come in the frame) and S1 if im shooting along with canon 580's
