One of my favorite 5D owners! Taking out the 40mm 2.8 out in Los Angeles today. Keep up the great work sir. You provide a lot of value to us 5D owners. Thank you.

Been running a 5d 2 for almost 10 years now. My 2 most used lenses are the 17-40 and and an ancient 70-200 F4 ( non IS of course ). Everytime I think I should upgrade to a 16-35 or a IS version of the 70-200 you put out a video like this and change my mind !
@MartinCastein3 жыл бұрын
haha well no harm in upgrading but not always a massive benefit either! 16-35 could be worth it though.
@normanskistreet2 жыл бұрын
@@MartinCastein I had both briefly and found with the 16-35mm F4 IS I could more confidently shoot at all apertures. Add to that the IS and you have a far more hand hold-able camera, albeit somewhat heavier. Also felt 17-40mm was far more prone to flare and it washes out the contrast. You seem to get great work out of that lens though but I suspect that is partially thanks to the tripod and some nice post work. What do you use to merge photos when needing more dynamic range? I have PL5 and Capture One and Infinity Photo..
@MartinCastein2 жыл бұрын
@@normanskistreet Hi Norman, im using photoshop to merge or sometimes just lightroom really. I dont think it matters what software you use really. Regarding the lenses the f4 IS is better for sure but i dont think its that much better for people to really upgrade. id happily still use the 17-40 as well.

@@normanskistreet Norman is is Martin's sheer skill, experience and perseverance! I mean he's using a Classic !!!! I am on a budget, so I push myself to get the 17-40 let alone there 16-35, however Martin has shown me that you need a lens collection before you can really do much (Ive spent the time doing portraits of my kids when they would let me with a 50 etc). I have been photography more seriously for what 16 years, but I have got bored during those periods and sold everything. I have not really used my 5D mk ii yet but am now excited to, mainly thanks to Martin. Professor Hines for example is awesome but he is paid by Zeiss, so he will always push those lenses (OK why not), Martin open the other hand - a 5D mk I FFS! This channel has been amazing.

As a 5d user that shoots portrait and fashion work you get the shock of your life when you shoot a landscape with this camera and see a zillion dust spots! My sensor well over due a clean!

Martin I have been using the Canon 17 40mm F4 for years now and I will never sell it. Wonderful images as well. Great lens. Thanks for bringing this one to us. Cheers

its so useful isnt it, i often find myself going to the longer end of the focal range as well. if you can combine with a 70-200 f4 you wouldnt need to carry a mid range zoom either really just to cover the 40-70mm range.

I saw the 17-40 lens for sale for $250-300 and was looking for more of a review of the lens, but I think the insight you provide on “how to use” this lens is what I needed to see.

thanks for the effort and sharing. i am an appreciative subscriber. your thoughts on the EF 17-40/4L? is it "good enough" or would you prefer the more current 16-35/4? i would use the 17-40 for events and landscape. my two canon bodies are the EOS R and the 6D. thanks in advance. thumbs up.
@MartinCastein11 ай бұрын
The 17-40 is good enough for sure and the 16-35 f4 is is a bit better you should be fine with the 17-40

That was an excellent video and shows hard work getting out there in such weather and time of day. Nice image, looks like you may have lightened up the buildings in the distance, which is nice. Nice colors. It is difficult to get the light where one wants it and it changes quickly. I have but one warning for landscape shooters. The yeti. I was almost attacked by one, here's the story. I was out in the woods shooting this and that when I noticed something next to my jeep on the passenger side. As I moved closer I saw it was a white tailed female marking her territory. A yeti? As I raised my camera to take a shot, she turned and snarled showing her teeth and making aggressive sounds. I shall never forget the noise she made, it sounded almost like swear words. I lowered my camera and backed away slowly. It was a close call. The moral of the story: let females mark their territory without recording the incident, you will live longer.

Your video is very interesting. But the excessive movement of your camera when recording you is too annoying. I couldn't take it
