Canon 5D Mark III Audio Tutorial

Used my Mk3 for a few jobs now that required audio. First one didn't go so well. Used a Sennheiser G3 wireless kit, AF out set to -12. The Mk3 record level was about 50% & I got tons of noise. Later read somewhere that Canon didn't put a very good preamp in the Mk3. Suggested solution was to turn Mk3 volume down to 1 notch above 0 or OFF and then raise your AF out until you get decent levels on the camera thus using the G3's preamp instead of the Mk3's. Working ok so far. Thoughts? Suggestions

Perfect video. One small note you need to be in video mode to adjust the audio.

yes you can, you can even do it silently so camera does not pick up on noise, but I am wondering how the audio levels show up on the screen with all the other info when you are recording. On the mark ii they are not available at all while recording so you cant see when you are low or high during an interview.

Do you need a special audio in cable for external mic input or does a standard 1/8 aux cable work?

Thanks for the the tutorial ,are there still issues with having the image stabiliser on, i get a weird sound when i have it on with manual recording .

so am I the only mark iii owner who has Sound Recording on the menu but just an On and Off capability? Having a meter and other adjustments sounds like a dream! Am I in need of a software upgrade or something?

Dave Hansen You're not alone, Dave. Even when they mention "red camera, sub menu four," I only have three sub-menu's. Sound Recording for me reads "On and Off" with no "Manual" option.

+Michael Feerick, you need to have it set in Video mode to get the 5 sub menus. Then you will have the options.

Does this disable AGC? I find that to be the biggest setback for filming with the 5D series.

Your instructions for adjusting the headphone output are frustrating because I couldn't figure out how to make the rate button apply to the headphone out levels (holding the rate button adjusted other elements not headphone out). But thanks for the other information.

When I use my external mic, when playing back the video on computer/phone etc you can only hear it when wearing headphones! Any ideas as to why it might be?

Yeah! I converted the video to an audio file and split it into its different channels using audacity. I then deleted the left channel, and copied the right channel and pasted it into the left. Hope this helps, it works perfectly for me now!

Hello, are you familiar with "Photo SFXart Tricks" (do a Google search for it)? On their website you can watch a useful free video showing how you can create brilliant pictures. It made it easier for Matt to create pictures which leave you with that wow-effect when you take a look at them. I hope it will help you also...
