Almost 4 years later and you have a big thank you from me. I'm totally new at using microphones and your initial white noise is the same or lower of what I am experiencing. Back to my microphone settings in the evening, I really have to check out if this is the solution. In any case, thank you for the proven point. It might not be my microphone after all, it might be just some settings to be adjusted.

Great video. Query: How do we manage if the mic that we have no external sensitivity adjustment?

This makes wireless Lav's waaay more tempting now. I usually put audio in a separate recorder, but this would take away the headache of having to sync audio with the added benefit of no audio hiss. Thank you so much. :)

Best vid ever on how to stop hissing. I bought a yeti n thought it was being sensitive, as it's way more high maintenance than all my other mic's, but no, twas the camera settings. I thank you Sir. And obvs subbed immediately! :)

THANK YOU. For a second I thought ALL recordings of videos had this white noise and post process was always a necessity, but I knew in the back of my mind the 5d Mk 3 didn't have a professional audio preamp built in. I thought buying an external shotgun microphone would solve my problems, but the white noise still persisted! Even with its' +10 db switch. THANK YOU AGAIN.

Excellent tut, mate! I used the Sennheiser Ew100 for almost 20 years and the Canon 5DM2 since it first came out but never bother to use the cam as a video camera due to the poor AF, codec, no headphone jack, etc. etc. But now that Canon got the DP AF, wow! That's a game changer! So, I'm testing my old toys with your suggestion. It works out great! Thanks again for taking the time to make this tut.

Great tutorial. Very informative. I admit I'm new to audio and Canon DSLRs. On the Levels displayed on the Canon LCD screen, I'm assuming those yellow dots on the right indicate peaking? I notice that when quite a few yellow dots were visible, you were saying that wasn't too much peaking. However, on someone else's tutorial video (which used a Panasonic mirrorless) it was recommended to have just a little bit of peaking on occasions. With the Panasonic camera, red bars indicate peaking. And they were adjusting it so that just one red bar would show up now and then on the Levels. I'm guessing that one red bar on the Panasonic would be equivalent to one yellow dot on the Canon. Just a little confused why a whole bunch of yellow dots on the Canon is an acceptable amount of peaking whereas on the Panasonic, just the occasional red bar is viewed as acceptable.

It was the sensitivity of the ew100!!!! Went crazy today trying to figure this out. I had my ew100 sensitivity set to -33!

Hey, so the DSLR is the reason for the audio hiss? I've been having the same problem with audio hiss and I'm wondering if a simple audio recorder would help

Great tutorial on how to adjust the audio settings but as an audio guy I'd leave head room and work with it in post. I'd never suggest allowing the levels to be close to zero.
