Thank you for those useful tips in maximizing the buffer capacity for my 5D3! Now my buffer allows me to take as much as 13 RAW at a time instead of 7!

Thanks Grant. I've just ourchased the 5d iii from someone who wasn't using it. Almost 5k shutter count. This info is very useful on me.
@grantatkinson81084 жыл бұрын
It still an excellent camera Matshete, and that is such a low shutter count! In most real-world use, the 5Dmk3 hardly gives up anything really significant to even Canon's newest cameras...!

Thanks for the step by step guide Grant. I'm looking forward to field testing these new (well, new to me) settings this week!

Also Safety shift reduces the buffer! its when you for example max out your shutterspeed at 1/8000s but in Av it is still too bright for the camera. then the iso can actually be lowered by the camera all the way down to iso 50. for some reason it takes quite some processing power

Great set of tips Grant and very well explained too. Would I be right in thinking that by making these adjustments (and using the faster card as you mentioned) , you would also benefit from a faster FPS (frames per second) on the high speed drive function of the camera? Good to see that you are rolling out more of these videos - immensely useful. Dave
@grantatkinson81088 жыл бұрын
+Dave T Thanks for the feedback. Whilst a faster card wont increase the frame rate which is 6 fps at maximum, it will prolong the time period that you can continue to shoot at 6fps. If you use the SD card, you will still get 6fps, but not for very long. It is the same if you use the CF card drive with a very slow card.
@grantatkinson81088 жыл бұрын
+Dave T The slow SD drive in the 5Dmk3 is a drawback for fast shooting, and it is the same with the CF/SD card drives in the now-discontinued 1D Mark 4 and 1D Mark 3. Fortunately in the 7D Mark 2 and the 5DSR the SD drive has been uprated, and it can write almost as fast as the CF drive, if not quite match it.

Grant Atkinson Thanks for both these replies Grant. I' didn't know those facts about the 7DII - though I had noticed that it seemed to write to an SD quite fast.

can apply to markIV as well thank u... will e intereting to see diff between cf cards and sd...
@grantatkinson81085 жыл бұрын
Hi Nico it can apply to the Mark IV although the SD card drive in the Mark IV can run data almost as fast as the CF card can, unlike the 5D Mark 3. The rest of the things are similar.
@boulx5 жыл бұрын
@@grantatkinson8108 i can`t find any test about that on internet but thank u for the answer, nowadays the sd are half price of similar cf cards. Thank u for making things easier with the settings and menu of my Canon
@grantatkinson81085 жыл бұрын
@@boulx I have tested them directly using Sandisk 160mb sec CF card and Sandisk 95mb sec SD card, on the 5D Mark 4 if I remember the buffer burst might have been 22 frames on the CF and 19 frames on the SD, more or less. And maybe I might have mentioned it in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZa6oJasdtRle6M

One tip that I heard from a particular wedding photographer is rather then simply remove the SD card, he sets up the camera to write the JPEG (only) to it while the RAW goes to the CF. Obviously the JPEG is smaller and thus isn't impacted by the slower write speeds and you still benefit from the redundancy should the unthinkable happen to the CF.
@grantatkinson81088 жыл бұрын
I think that is the best way to go if you need a copy of every shot you take, but as soon as you have an SD card in the slot and the camera is writing to it, capacity for continous shooting is degraded...I may be wrong but I think that the slow card then controls the write speed to both slots..but I might be wrong.
