The Canon 5D series of cameras holds a reputation as a robust camera capable of adapting to the most demanding scenarios. However, after waiting four years and a release that garnered more criticism than fanfare - has the new 5D mark IV broken tradition?

Watching a Canadian say AA, and Moire all in one sentence made my head spin and then I laughed exactly like you did. It sounded like you said "eigh-eigh" or eh', eh' and more-eh'! Haha, all joking aside great review and since we never see snow unless above 5,500ft here in Southern California, so that was also nice to see for a change. I'm very late to the party here with the 5D Mark IV and have a funny or crazy backstory. You said the D800E/D810 outdid this camera, and I agree for most specs, but I will also admit I have owned two D850's, I own two D6's and I had three different D500's over the years. Yet, I don't like Nikon mirrorless, so I'm slowly switching to Canon the cheap and fast way, while I wait for a deal on the R3. My local store that our newspaper's have an account at, could've given me one the other day (An R3) however it was technically spoken for by a Non-CPS member and the store obviously has to make money, so I'm the slow train waiting for an R3 at the cost price we get, which is likely 10% above actual dealer cost, we only get this deal becasue we have so, so much gear and buy and sell gear every year as we slowly upgrade. We have Z9's, but I can't stand them, the noisy files and EVF both are not great, I much prefer my D6. However the R3 specs are much closer to what I prefer, low noise/great DR at High ISO in low-light conditions I often find myself in, nearly daily (every other day?) as a photojournalist. Some days you get 3 assignments and some days we just listen to scanners/radios and self dispatch ourselves from home to breaking news, such as wildfire's, shootings, murder, etc., etc.!

Just order my today and I cannot wait to have her in my hands....after viewing many image galleries of the top DSLRs I realized this is the camera for me...the colors, the sharpness, its dynamic range looks perfect in my eyes. I have been using a 6D for the past 4 years so I can see this wonderful beast serving me minimum 4 years or longer. There are a few functions that would be nice to have like eye focusing, zebras, etc...but is not something I could not live without.

Neil, that time lapse of the northern lights was astonishingly beautiful. I grew up in Saskatoon and this whole review, while excellent, became a giant memory-lane trip for me. This is the second time I`ve watched this review through; just super useful - many thanks. This review, and Dustin Abbot`s and Tyler Stahlman`s reviews, are all so, so good. Why are you all Canadian?

Excellent appraisal, hand-in-hand, in terms of sheer quality, with the tests and reviews DPR made. It is a pleasure when reviews are product-centered and not brand driven, showing us the positives and negatives of a camera. Kudos!

nice way of reviewing a camera - hands on with lots of info, video, and stills - not just 24 hours of testing before rambling on about the negatives and not just a fan boy praise - but based on actual use over a month of shooting - great work - thank you

Ruben, that's exactly what inspired me to create this video. I'd watched countless 'review' videos from people who had literally just said goodbye to the Fedex driver - people who hadn't taken the time to actually use or evaluate the camera personally and would just regurgitate specs in a create manner. I'm glad to hear you liked it :)

+Malcolm King thanks for the feedback. The upgrade from the 5DmkIII may not look substantial on paper when comparing specs, but once you have the opportunity to use the newer 5DmkIV the difference are very noticeable and do make the upgrade worthwhile. 😀

Thanks Jeff, I too was a bit nervous at first :P Canada is such a diverse country for landscapes and wildlife, the east and west coasts are beautiful, but at the same time the rolling prairies are just as beautiful in their own way. And then there's the arctic, if you visit only one location in Canada it needs to be the far north :)

This guy is good. He's one of the very best I've listened to on KZbin photography videos. Since I got my 5DIV, I have loved this camera. There is nothing I need it to do that it doesn't do. I agree with you about dual pixel RAW, the file sizes don't justify the small benefit. There are a number of features such as the wireless file transfer via Wi-Fi, and the Canon Connect phone app that can be used to completely control the camera, (video and stills) that few people seem to talk about. Also being able to produce a time-lapse right in the camera at 1080p is also a great feature. I haven't upgraded my video card to 4K, no 4k monitor, so I'm looking at a cost of about $5-grand to get comfortably into 4K. So why bother right now... Another cool thing is the 5D MIV, with the 50mm f1.2 lens can shoot video at a low light level that I can't even see in. All in all it is an expensive camera, but at this point, I've forgotten the cost. Now I'm just having a ball with the camera. I also have a 7D Mark II. The only reason I kept it is the longer reach. But both cameras use the same batteries and basically operate the same - same focus system, GPS etc. The 7D MII does 10 frames/second, some people are all about speed, but I don't use it like that.

This is by far the best review ive seen so far. Very intuitive and detailed. Thank you so much my m4 will be here next week thanks to your awesome review, super excited. One question I've never shot 4k how exactly do you transcode the video? How fast of a c.f. and SD would you recommend. Thanks again
@neilfisher
@neilfisher 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback Wine Country Games. 😀 Computer processors and GPU's have advanced to the point where a modern workstation shouldn't need to transcode files from the Canon 5DmkIV. However, if you're editing video with an older system that is unable to playback the motion jpeg mov files in realtime, you may want to consider transcoding files and/or creating proxies. Transcoding is simply the process of creating a duplicate video file with a lower bit rate or more processor friendly codec. In regards the memory cards: the Canon 5D mark IV's SD card slot in only UHS-I and it's recommended that 4K video is captured on Compact Flash cards. I personally use CF cards with a write speed of 160 MB per second and never encountered any buffering issues. Hope this helps. 😀

Good review! I own the Fuji X-T2 and got the 5D MIV in December as a full frame side kick off some of my not much used Fuji lenses. I also previously shot with the D500 but the iso 6400 and above in low light had a lot of luminance noise, but being aps c, I expected that. I have also owned the 10D and 20D in the past and have been a fan of Canon colors and the 5D series as a whole but never owned one until now!

Really enjoyed your review, thanks for posting. It has really helped me decide on which camera I buy next (will be the Canon. I'm going to be switching from Nikon, which is a big step but the Canon body/lens combinations seem way ahead now) Love the scenery where you are too, we don't see enough of the great plains
@neilfisher
@neilfisher 7 жыл бұрын
+olrepas Switching platforms is a massive undertaking for anyone moving between any brand - I imagine it must be intimidating. I shot with a Nikon system for just over five years a few years back and although there is absolutely nothing ‘wrong’ with their camera’s I still prefer Canon for a number of reasons. If you do end up making the switch I’m sure it will take some time to get use to a new platform - but it should be worth it in the long run. I’m a prairie transplant and actually grew up on Canada’s west coast, but the great plains of North America certainly are stunning.

Hi Neil. I was wondering why you said " I still prefer Canon for a number of reasons." I have a 7dII and was thinking of getting the 5div but with all the Nikon and Sony hype its hard not to feel discouraged in canon. I have a lot of canon glass already and it's not as good on my crop so want to go full frame. I have the 100-400II 70-200II 24-70II, 100mm macro, 50mm macro 65mpe. I shoot a little bit of everything but thinking of getting into food photography. Thank you! :-)

Thanks for your review of the Mark4. I have and use the camera as well. Have you been able to handle a Canon EOS R5 yet? Will you be reviewing the R5 in the future. Keep your video's coming, they are great.

Many thanks @Jerry Niehaus 😃 I haven't yet been able to play with an EOS R5 and it's price here in Canada will ultimately be the determining factor in whether I bite the bullet or not. Having said that, its specifications are remarkable - and as someone who shoots video more than seventy-five per cent of the time... I want it badly 😝😝😝

Wow what an in depth, unbiased, and informative hands-on review! Neil thank you for doing such a fluid report on this camera! You were honest, unbiased, and you seemed to have covered just about every detail needed to be discussed! I am definitely subscribing :) I do have a question regarding the sharpness of the images taken with the 5DMIV... Since I only own the 50mm f/1.8 I can't decide if my images appear less sharp because of the camera or if I need to update my lenses? My more important question is regarding that I often have an issue where I will focus on my subjects then when on the computer the images appear slightly out of focus-- this is becoming a reoccurring problem and I am wondering if you have heard of this complaint or if I have my settings wrong?
@neilfisher
@neilfisher 7 жыл бұрын
+Sean Sandoval thanks for the ki d words. Personally I haven't used the 50mm f/1.8 with the 5D mark IV, however I haven't encountered any issues with sharpness while using the lenses at my disposal, including the: 16-35mm f/2.8 L II, 35mm f/1.4 L, 100mm f/2.8 L IS Macro and 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II. It is quite possible that the 50mm f/1.8 just isn't able to resolve the resolution of the 30 megapixel sensor. When the 5DS and 5DSr were released, Canon listed a number of lenses that were 'qualified' to resolve the high 50 megapixel resolution. To determine if you're encountering a focusing issue. Lock of your camera on a tripod and use live view to manually focus on a proper focus chart. If the resulting photos are indeed in focus, try making micro adjustments it correct the camera's autofocus when pair with the 50mm f/1.8. If you've already made micro adjustments, it like is the quality of the lens. Honestly, if you currently only own the 50mm f/1.8, you probably better off investing in a few other lenses prior to plunging into a 5D mark IV - just my two cents. Hope this helps. 😀

thanks for the review. I noticed that with the dual pixel when you were adjusting the slider the feathers sharpened quite a bit. I dont know if you I am mistaken or if you noticed it or not. Have you tried to use it again or what were your thoughts on that?

+Will Corwin I've done a bit more experimenting and Canon has further explained how to achieve successful shifts. With the photo of the hawk featured to demonstrate, I used a rather small aperture and as a result the Dual Pixel RAW focus shift is hardly visible. Canon has explained the biggest focus shifts are visible when using large apertures and I've experienced this as well - anything bigger than f/2.8 seems to see the most benefit in Dual Pixel focus shift. Hope this sheds some more light on the issue for you. ☺️☺️☺️

Excellent work. Probably the most honest and unbiased review on youtube right now. I own the Mark IV and I just have one note. You don't necessarily need to transcode the 4k footage. I can fluently edit the files on Premiere (including adding filters and transitions etc) without having to transcode. 0 dropped frames. The catch is you do need a powerful computer to pull it off. That and the amount of storage needed are, for me, the only real problems with the 4k on the Mark IV. The workflow is challenging but the quality is amazing.
@neilfisher
@neilfisher 7 жыл бұрын
Very true NMR. I too have no issues editing 4K footage in real-time without the need to transcode. However, the storage is ridiculous! The quality is good, but quality versus data rate is unacceptable. The 4K Blackmagic URSA mini captures CinemaDNG RAW at 265MB/s and the quality is miles better than the 5DmarkIV. I realize the URSA mini is a dedicated video camera, but there are people who purchased the 5DmarkIII and markII primarily for video use and I can't see anyone picking up a 5DmarkIV solely for capturing video when there are better options at a comparable price point.

But there are those like me, you need a reflex for both stills and video, and this is the question that I currently have. The 5d markIV suits me for the photos, but especially the 1080p video is not the greatest quality, true?

Chuck F the quality of 1080p video from the 5D mark IV is great. A big step forward over the video quality of the 5D mark III ☺️

True. The Panasonic GH4 is a fair comparison, but I don't consider the Sony A7 series competitors - their battery life, over heating sensors and overall reliability are too much to ignore.

If you're a wedding photographer and have tested the dual pixel AF i believe you will disagree with the statements about that function here. Just goes to show that different types of photography will find different uses for functions. Also note that ISO numbers are useless; ISO numbers into the 10s of thousands are gimmics regardless of the manufacturer. If you compare the ISO sensitivity to past 5D products you will find it's not just an expanded range but also a higher quality of sensitivity. Great video Neil. Keep em coming.

Great video, and one that makes a lot of very salient points, especially about people who buy predominantly stills cameras and expect a full range of video camera capabilities. If you shoot high end video then buy a dedicated video camera. Simple really, different tools for different jobs.

Neil Fisher, how often do you use it today? Is the 5DM4 with the new 22-105mm lens worth $4200 you think? On the fence for buying.
@neilfisher
@neilfisher 7 жыл бұрын
+Eddie Cardwell I use the 5D mark IV as my primary camera and it has been great - definitely a worthwhile upgrade for anyone already invested in the Canon system. I've personally never been a fan of the 24-105mm f/4.0 IS L lens, the unnecessary overlap in focal length with a 70-200mm lens with a slower aperture doesn't make it overly appealing - I'd much rather have a 24-70mm f/2.8... but just my two cents.

That was a great review, overall. I'm surprised how quickly you dismissed dual pixel autofocus, however. It tracks a walking/moving subject far better than the average photographer could manually focus on a moving subject unless they have many years experience as a professional videographer . To say you wouldn't trust technology for focus-pulling is ridiculous as the whole camera is technology. You trust it for general autofocus and metering, etc., why wouldn't you trust it for general video focusing (within the limits of its capabilities)?
@neilfisher
@neilfisher 7 жыл бұрын
cooloox, you're correct that Dual Pixel AF is helpful for a photographer in basic situations: a walking subject at a close distance to the camera, a talking head moving slightly through your depth of field. Though as you said, for a videographer with many years of experience, that experience will do a better job during the most demanding situations. I completely stand by what I said, in that I can not trust Dual Pixel AF when capturing critical footage. I am an experienced videographer with many years under my belth and when capturing a bird in flight or a coyote moving through grass, Dual Pixel AF is useless. Interrupting objects coming between the subject and camera, long distances and flat contrast settings leave Dual Pixel AF baffled and hunting. Metering and auto focus for still photography is only momentary - fractions of second, capturing video is minutes. Although Dual Pixel AF works well and reliably for basic situations, when facing challenging and demanding scenes it's not worth losing a shot.

I really want to go full frame, currently have the 80D and have invested a lot in Canon lenses so I'm basically locked in to there cameras. I really want a FF pro body with a flippy screen. I like doing macro work and that's a God send on the 80D but really could do with a FF sensor. Don't know whether to hold my breath and hope one materialises in the near future or just take a plunge and buy a Mark iii or iv. First world problems i know!

Thanks for a great review (location is awesome). The video capability of the camera is really of zero concern to me as I never shoot video and I'm strictly photo-centric. I shoot landscapes, night-sky (astro), and airshows (of which the 7 fps would be great - and that more advanced AF system rocks). I currently shoot with a 6D and it's slower 4.5 fps makes airshows a challenge but I've managed to get some awesome images with the 6D. I rented a 5DM4 for the last airshow and the difference was compelling to make me consider the 5DM4. I need a 2nd camera body (already have $$ invested in Canon glass) so this might do the trick - just wish it wasn't $3500 USD.... there is so much I love about the 6D I don't think I'd give it up. (100% agree with your comment on the articulating screen - I don't trust them, 6D does NOT have it either, and I prefer the "solid" less-moving-parts design)

I'm a 1dx2 and 5d4 user (mostly photojournalism and portrait work) and I am currently looking at the a9/a7rIII for many of its features and I'm wondering if you are doing the same or looking at the d850? I am also "brand agnostic" -- thanks--

+Jared Charney I personally can't consider any of the Sony A series as serious contenders for wildlife work in harsh environments - I mainly base this on early A7 issues and the newer models may have addressed these issues, but still mainly look only at higher end Nikon and Canon bodies. The Nikon D850 is a beautiful machine and if I weren't so heavily invested in Canon glass I'd pick one up in a heart beat. The resolution and improved 4K capture make it an incredibly strong camera. 😀

@@neilfisher , Having started shooting in late 90's on 4x5 commercially, I currently use a 5dsr after many years with the following dslr: 1ds 1,2,3, 5d 2-3, then 5dsr. I have always also had a backup or 2nd body for setting up two shots in diff locations on a site - mainly at dusk for obvious reasons. I usually sell off the outgoing model when they still have solid resale which is usually just before a new thing is released. I'd sell the backup for example, then shift it into that slot with new purchase made. Currently cannot decide on best backup. I want awesome video stats for work ideas so it's come down to 1dxII, 5dIV, and even eos R. I just reviewed old jobs back to when I transitioned from 4x5 and realized the 20Mp cameras with my own manual "hdr" layering and shift lens stitching, were completely fine for 100's of project images used commercially. I may actually consider the 1dxII now because it'll be a backup anyway and I am so intrigued by the 120p HD with full sensor width. The only thing that I would feel lacking is the C-log in mkIV or eos r. However, I'm also a fan of shooting when the light is "right" vs relying on c-log to get more out of when you maybe shouldn't be trying to shoot anyway. I could see a lazy-factor in the c-log sort of like not 'needing' to light interiors as much now as back when we used 4x5 and polapan100 for scene building. I am tempted to get both bodies LOL probably a good situation to utilize my CPS for test runs. I only see c-log as the reason for 5dIV as cost that close becomes irrelevant after a while. Of course you could just get an eos r, sell it in a year when a higher spec body comes out and you'd lose way less $ on the swap compared to the 1dx2.
@jwestpro
@jwestpro 5 жыл бұрын
I would like to do more wildlife and video which is the reason for this conundrum. For pure stills I'd just get a 5dIV and call it done/plenty good enough.
