I used to shoot almost entirely AV. I thought it was close enough to manual. However, getting a 5D1 led me to find this channel. And I have realized that shooting manual is a lot easier than it seemed before.

@@RichardBarleyphotoManual seems so hard at first, then you get good at it very quickly and have all the control and no autoexposure shenanigans. Just take a test shot, adjust, and you're usually golden. With a camera this old you can't get everything in it, so just let your clouds blow. Less dynamic range = more contrast. You only need 6.5 stops for monitors and prints and this gives you 8 clean, still.

I was a US Navy Photographer ('72-'76) and live near Gillette Stadium and bought a 5D mkI this summer, not so much for the full frame (I have a 6D mkii) but for the old school feel of you being able to control everything (more being forced to) on my other Canon's (have the 80D 90D and 6Dii) even in M you can use Auto ISO. Here it is old school you set your ISO, like picking out a roll of film and then dial in the shutter speed and aperature. I can even carry my old light meter! I call it my throw back camera but I can still blaze away and shoot hundreds of shots and not worry about changing film in the field or for different situations. I enjoy your videos

I'm really loving your videos about the 5d classic which I used for many years and still love. I now have a 5d MK II that is absolutely incredible with AFMA. I truly wish the original 5D has this option. That being said the original color array of the 5d has something special that is not present in later cameras.

My 5d classic stopped working in the middle of a trip. I thought that was the end of it. Shutter and mirror stopped moving. I brought it in to the repair shop, the next day I got a call that it was fixed! Only €50 to fix the shutter and mirror mechanism. Good to be in China 😉. The repairman was happy to see a 5d classic again!

@@RichardBarleyphotoconsidering the waves this camera made when it came out, and how many photographers foamed at the mouth over it, it's no worse a camera these days! It takes more skill to use than modern cameras is all. Which is good when you're learning. It teaches you, it won't do all the work for you.

Im not a wedding photographer but I USED to shoot in manual mode. AWB and RAW only. Recently ive been playing with AV mode and EV comp. I've found it to be slightly faster out in the field. I always end up anywhere between +0.7-1.3 EV for ettr. This camera produces beautiful shots at the max native iso of 1600 when exposed all the way to the right. Ive never ventured onto 3200.

Thanks once again Richard. I am a long time "believer" in what you use and what you teach. I purchased a used 6D last year, but with rare exception, still prefer the files from my old 5D1. That said I would be very much interested in learning more on how you use the 5D in lower light with examples of shooting to protect / recover highlights. Not sure I am up for an entire tutorial, but it is a possibility. All of your videos have been rock solid. You are, along with Joe Buissink, Dennis Reggie, Joel Grimes, my absolute photography fave's.

Thank you for your kind comments, The key to producing the best file from the mk 1 is producing a bright highlight in a RAW file then recovering it back again in lightroom. The shadows open up and noise goes down.

Do you recommend using Exposure Bracketing? This gives you a range of pictures and at least tests which exposure works best in the situation.
@RichardBarleyphoto
@RichardBarleyphoto 4 жыл бұрын
Bracketing your exposures is a good idea if its possible for the subject you are photographing. Accurate exposure is important in you are producing a jpg file. With the RAW file you do have quite a bit of latitude for error with the 5D classic. I always expose to the right which means most people would think I am overexposing the file, One thing to remember is the newer cameras Sony, Nikon recommend under exposure to retain the highlights, then brighten them up in lightroom or photoshop afterwards. Never do that with the 30D or 5D because you will introduce a lot of noise. Long answer to your question , but yes bracket until you really know the file well.

@@RichardBarleyphoto Thank you for the feedback. I would also like your opinion about "shutter count". I recently bought my 5D Classic off eBay, but the camera doesn't register the number of shots taken in its lifetime like the Mark II - IV cameras. Is "shutter count" really important to consider when buying used cameras?

Richard I'm certainly no pro, wouldn't consider myself to be very knowledgeable about digital cameras at all. What I am wondering is that, given the widely acknowledged low DR and relatively poor iso performance of the 5D, why don't you ever dip into the base iso of the camera when you can? Do you not get any advantage with that increase in DR and lower noise? This isn't a snide or rhetorical question by the way, I believe you do everything for a reason but I'm wondering if you can elaborate on that point a little for me! Thanks for these absolutely fantastic vids. I'm waiting for my 5D to arrive in the mail (Feb 2024 and I've still never seen jpegs that looks so tasty). It will accompany my 1D classic which gives very pretty images and is from 2001 I believe. David

Using your 200 ISO and 200 shutter speed and 5.6 I see in your video you have the camera on spot meter. Is that so you can check exposure on the highlights from time to time to keep it to the right and not blow it out?
@RichardBarleyphoto

I never use metering, just take a quick test shot and then adjust quickly from there. I always expose to the right and general over expose and retrieve the highlights in lightroom. Experiment with the 5D classic RAW file and you be amazed what you can do with it in Lightroom. Glad to see your using 200, 200, 5.6

It's interesting to note that you assumed others use non-manual modes on this camera! Wondering what's the basis of this assumption! Even hobbyist photographers like me; always use manual mode on full frame cameras. I've been enjoying this wonderful hobby for the last 15 years and own three full frame bodies namely 5D Classic, 5DII and 5DIII. I'm always on manual mode while using these great cameras for landscape and street photography purposes. Even I use 5DIII for wildlife photography in manual mode. Sometimes, I use my pure action cameras (1DIV & 7D) in shutter priority mode when situation demands. Thanks for the video.

I like a longer video. I have shot the 5DIII that a friend has but I keep going back to my 6D, to me the black and white and low light just seems better and this is hard to describe but the feel of the picture seems better to me. I am not tech kind of person so maybe I am all wrong on that, but when I print my images I like the 6D better than when I tried out a 5DIII.
