vnitto I've considered getting tele-extensions to go on my 5d3 (+ my lovely 70-200 f2.8 IS2 or 400mm f5.6), but I might just save up for the 7d2 instead. Having 2 bodies handy would be very convenient anyway, and those extra fps and pixels for wildlife would just about be worth the investment. I would not get the 5dsr, unless I lived in, and worked for, a safari business in Tanzania. EDIT: I got a tele-extender 2x Mark 3 from Canon, gently used.

Several pro photographers will disagree... the wildlife images with the 5 dsr and detail captured is fantastic. And frames per second mean nothing if you're an experienced photographer. I captured thousands of images with film cameras like the canon a1 and eos 3 and their frame rate was only like 5 to 6 fps the canon a1 wasn't even auto focus , I would choose the right time at peak action and fire. With practice great images followed. Digital newbies might need 10 to 14 fps. Arther Morris loves the 5dsr he only uses 2 5dsr's , 1...7d mii and 1... dxmii so you tell me which he prefers. I use the 5dsr with fantastic results. Cropped RAW images are still full of detail and resolution also reproducing nice prints.

Interesting review, and seems to fit in with what Canon has said about their new high megapixel bodies. That they are specialized tools probably best suited to a studio environment. Sad to see they came up with a mega whopper of a new sensor, but again failed to address and close the gap in dynamic range, ISO performance or noise that Nikon/Sony have set the bar too. Fingers crossed a new 5d mk-iv appears soon and manages to close the gap and address some of those issues.

The 4.5 frames is too slow for the grandkids sports (Hockey and Baseball). I can not find a video or website page comparison of 4-5fps vs 7fps vs 10fps???? Listening to a shutter sound does not help. Saying the faster the better doesn't help as there are other factors that can be involved example 'The focusing system and how well you know the camera'. How can the 5Ds(R) be good for wildlife? Are you sure the 5Ds/r AF isn't as good as the others you mentioned, it seems to have all the latest Canon goodies including the 150,000-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor, which is what you want on a Canon? Also the T6 cameras surely have quite a bit worse AF? I'd certainly agree on the burst rate though. I do wonder if they stopped saving the whole sensor data (for Raw) in the crop modes if they could get the rate up though (or at least the buffer space, something like 24MB/image vs. 60MB)?
@TonyAndChelsea9 жыл бұрын
John Leslie It's the same AF system from the 5D Mark III, which is great for moving subjects. The T6 cameras definitely have worse AF; for still subjects like perched birds, One Shot has worked well for me, but I'd push you to a used 7D for moving subjects.
@johnmichaelleslie48359 жыл бұрын
Tony Northrup Are you sure, I thought the 5Ds had a 150k sensor it could use for tracking which the III didn't (i.e. EOS iTR AF)?
@Pepingco9 жыл бұрын
John Leslie iTR is for infrared light - so it tracks the difference in IR light hitting the AF sensor - This is specifically important in low light AF and in high contrast AF - so a bird in the sky it can track real easy, but not so useful when you are trying to track a bird among trees - you have to rely on the other elements of the AF.
@johnmichaelleslie48359 жыл бұрын
Poet Productions That isn't my understanding at all. The Canon info describes the 150k pixel sensor as being sensitive to Visible and Infrared light ("RGB+IR") and its uses as including face detection and tracking, also general tracking using using colour information... Plus it's used for the metering, so wouldn't be much use if it was IR only. www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/canon-5ds/canon-5dsA.HTM "the Canon 5DS utilizes the new 150,000-pixel RGB + IR metering sensor introduced on the 7D Mark II. This is a notable improvement from the iFCL 63-zone dual-layer metering sensor used on the 5D Mark III (and the 1D X's 100,000-pixel RGB sensor)." "The 5DS uses the 150K-pixel metering system to combine face detection and color information with the phase-detect AF sensor to help track subject movement." photo.stackexchange.com/questions/16499/what-is-eos-itr-af "The default AF mode for the EOS-1D X uses phase detection AF information, but the secondary option uses the face and color detection of the iTR AF. This feature is achieved by using information from the RGB metering sensor as part of the AF system." So in summary I do think the overall AF system on the 5Ds/r is an improvement on the 5DIII and possibly the 1Dx, although it's hard to compare the effect of the 1Dx's dedicated AF processor with whatever hardware you get in the 5Ds' dual Digic 6s.
@Pepingco9 жыл бұрын
John Leslie That was exactly my point. The 5DsR has the same AF as the 5D3 - but it includes IR ontop.... So the only advantage over the mk3 is the IR ability.... the original metering sensor has phase detect we know already with face detection etc I am only pointing out the difference between the new one and the old one. Nowhere in my orignal reply did I say you were wrong, I was only pointing out the main advantage of the new AF system, and in practice it really doesnt do much. I even said in my last sentence of the original reply - IR doesnt do a whole lot and you gotta rely on the rest of the AF system which is the RGB and the phase etc... but even then, Canon hasnt made any press releases about the new system - I dont know.

I think you made a mistake at 1:50 you say the 5DSR has no anti-aliasing filter. But im pretty sure it has one. it just cancels the effect of it "
@TonyAndChelsea9 жыл бұрын
Winston Hong yeah, that's the official language. I'm not sure how the magic works, but it's SHARP.
@smaakjeks9 жыл бұрын
Winston Hong So, what on earth does the filter actually do?
@churchill73029 жыл бұрын
***** Its an Anti-Aliasing filter which pretty much prevents the effects of moiré and false colour. In both Video and Stills. The down side is that the filter makes images not as sharp. I think the Nikon D7100 was the first camera to introduce a true " no anti aliasing filter ". The Nikon D800E claimed it didnt have one, ( thats why you needed to pay a bit more vs the D800) but it still had one it just magically " cancels it out somehow". So its the same deal with Canon : 5Ds still has an anti aliasing filter. Same as all the Canon ever release. But the 5DsR still has the filter. Its just canceled out. But not actually removed completely, and you need to pay more.
@smaakjeks9 жыл бұрын
Winston Hong Yeah, I know what an AA filter does, and the pros and cons. So, my question remains: if the filter is cancelled out, what does it really do? :D
@churchill73029 жыл бұрын
***** Oh my bad. Sounded like you didnt understand the AA filter. And well its still there to reduce the Moire and stuff. Its just Canon hasnt figured out how to get rid of it completely yet and not get alot of Moire. So they need to just say " cancels the effects" until they figure it out. But regardless its still there so its still going to be affecting the sharpness since its still actually there. It will probably be gone when the 5DS MK2 or whatever the newer generation will get called gets released. ( Not staying it not sharp now, just saying without it, it can be even sharper )

the 760i can also do 3X lossless movie zoom by picking the center pixels, that is 3 times longer zoom for video for free,1080P 250mm crop lens times 1.6 times 3 = 1200mm for video, that is x24 magnification try finding a 1200mm for a full frame camera, you will need a gorilla to carry the lens, crop is much better for wildlife

Please explain how a cropped body can pull out more detail than a full frame camera!!
@TonyAndChelsea9 жыл бұрын
+Christopher Howell Here ya go: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j3XFhnycd5qMi8U
@iSOBigD9 жыл бұрын
+Christopher Howell I think the shorter explanation is if you have a full frame camera and a crop camera, both shooting at say, 16 MP with the same 200mm focal length...On the crop, you're actually getting around 300mm so if you zoom in and take a picture of a bird filling up the entire frame, that's closer to 16 MP of actual bird pixels. On the full frame camera the bird would take up maybe 2/3 of the screen, so closer to 11 MP of bird pixels. If you then print both pictures (or look at them) at the same size, the crop camera's picture should seem more detailed. I think that's the main reason people use crop cameras for nature photography, they get more zoom and more pixel density for the bird or animal. If you were to crop digitally, you'd lose part of the image and end up with less pixels used to render the subject. That's not to say you can't just walk closer with the full frame camera and get the same detail, but generally animals get scared more and birds are in trees so you don't have the option.
@christopherhowell32099 жыл бұрын
+iSOBigD Yes I quite understand what you are saying,...however,as the aperature is efeciively stopped down on the cropped camera hence letting less light, how can one expect finer detail? I have the canon 70 D and a 5dmk3, and, when using a 400mm f2.8 mk2 lens on both cameras,the picture quality is by far ,better on the full frame camera!
@iSOBigD9 жыл бұрын
Christopher Howell It should be due to how much light it takes in, the depth of field, quality of the processor and sensor, etc. The FF ones in theory should always have better quality images, but only when comparing the exact same subject taking up each of their frames. If you compare a 1.5x crop image vs the same image taking up 50% of a full frame camera frame, then you're comparing a full image to half an image, so the second one will lack detail. Now if you compare a 50mp FF camera to a 10mp crop, that won't apply.
@ProgamerEU9 жыл бұрын
have you tested the dynamic range of the 5dsR vs the d810 yet?
@TonyAndChelsea9 жыл бұрын
In the landscape video coming Tuesday.
@johnlee30509 жыл бұрын
Tony I want to ask if the d810 is a better wildlife camera than the 5dsr, because nikon has a 1.5x crop instead of 1.6 on the canon. So when you are using crop mode on both of these cameras, the d810 has about 24 megapixels while the 5dsr has about 20 megapixels. The d810 has 7fps when using crop mode and a battery pack, while only 5fps on the 5dsr even on crop mode, the d810 also has a larger buffer. What did you think?
@TonyAndChelsea9 жыл бұрын
John Lee Generally we crop wildlife photos in post so the native crops of the APS-C bodies in the lineup don't impact the full-frame sensors. BTW, you have to divide by the crop factor squared, so the D810 at 1.5X is 16 megapixels. The 5DS-R at the same crop is 22 megapixels. So for the D810, if you have to crop anyway, you're way better off using a D7200. But the buffer problems on the 5DS-R are a real problem. I've been using it for perched birds, but I wouldn't use it for flying birds.
@stevek52399 жыл бұрын
This maybe more than I am supposed to ask but thought why not ask? I'm going to Churchill to spend a week on the Tundra Buggies to photograph Polar Bears (and arctic foxes if they are around) I'm bringing my 1D Mark IV with my 70-200, 200-400 and 800 lenses but need to rent a back up body. I'd rather not splurge on the 1DX. Was wondering what you'd think of bringing the 5DS R along with the 1D Mark IV to use on the trip. Or should I save $200 and go for the 7D II. Will probably never be back so rather do it right and maybe should just rent the 1DX. Thoughts?
@TonyAndChelsea9 жыл бұрын
+Steve K You won't need 10 fps for these subjects, so I'd bring the 5DS-R. As a follow-up to this video, I find myself grabbign the 5DS-R more than the 7D Mark II for wildlife. Anytime I'm shooting flying birds, I'd definitely want the 7D Mark II, but i've been doing more still birds lately.

@pplanetEarth8 жыл бұрын
One point that I see you don't mention about 5DSR buffer size is the amount of data that is being transferred to the SD card. When shooting raw with 50 megapixel resolution, one image would be around 70mb in size, 5 raw images would be about 350mb (hence more data to be transferred from the buffer to the SD card). Now if you compare this with a 20 megapixel camera (with raw files of about 30mb), 5 images would be 150mb (less than half data to be transferred). Now if you put this into perspective with the little progress that has been made over the last few years on mbps data transfer speed in computer hardware as opposed to other developments (shear storage size, processors, etc), I could understand why Canon wasn't able to increase the fps of this camera.

As a sports or wildlife camera, I don't think there is another camera out there even close to the abilities of the Canon D7 Mark II. Tony Northrup But less than the NX1 :P I finally have it now, I also picked up the Canon 400mm f/5.6. The focus on the 50-200 is a little slow, I've considered the Samsung 18-200 (which has a pretty unique and very fast AF due to using a voice coil motor) but I see the sharpness of the 18-200 is unfortunately quite bad (they designed it for video... so I guess they figured it was enough for the 1080 of the time, maybe even for 4k, but apparently not for stills). I may consider going NX1 only if they ever get around to releasing that 300mm f/2.8 they showed off at Photokina. The 150 of that 50-150 f/2.8 S lens just isn't enough.

I have a nikon d5200 and a collection of lens including a 18-270mm tamron and a 800-1600 opteka zoom. I install Osprey Nest Structures for the IL DNR Osprey Recovery Effort and just need it for surviellence of nests and taking ok pictures. The zoom out at 1600mm is F32 and I'm struggling to get good shots (iso 800 and 1/320 shutter speed). Is there an "old school" manual fixed 800mm plus telephoto I could use with a reasonably low F rating? Before you joke on the 1600mm you'd be shocked at the reach. Would a 2x teleconverter on the 18-270mm tamron work ok?
@TonyAndChelsea9 жыл бұрын
Michael Campbell You won't get any more detail by adding a 2x teleconverter to the 18-270; it's just not sharp enough at 270mm. I haven't used the 800-1600. If you want to stick with the D5200, you might consider the Nikon 300mm f4 and a 2x teleconverter--not cheap, but better than you'll get with any of the zooms. You might also consider switching to a used Canon 7D (sdp.io/7d) and a Canon 400mm f5.6 (sdp.io/c400) which is the sharpest, cheapest combination we've found.

Tony Northrup Thanks. I took a bunch of photos today at abuot 600 yards. With your pro equipment what would you expect to get at this range by cropping? For the stuff I do I really can't do much more than get out of the truck and snap some shots (for 3 nesting pairs I took 160 photos over about 15 minutes to get a dozen or so good ones including one with a red wing blackbird pecking on a flying osprey) The nest filled up the frame but it was overcast and all the pictures where "whited out". I'll do a little researching and looking around, you seem to know exactly what I'm after. I will review your editing wildlife vid and pick up your books.

Tony Northrup I bought a 70-300 nikon vr and am working on a used 300m f2.8 that ought to be slick with a 2x. If the 300mm falls thru I am looking at a couple 400mm and 500mms
@michaelcampbell55679 жыл бұрын
Tony Northrup I just got a 400mm f/3.5 and with a teleconverter it is just amazing. My arms get tired after a while though (I have a tripod wasn't using it). It is even better with a 2x teleconverter.

How many threads does lightroom support? How about Dual Exon vs Single i7 OC for editing huge megapixel pictures?
@TonyAndChelsea9 жыл бұрын
WADE CH It's mostly single-threaded, which means the performance sucks no matter what. I haven't found that it makes a huge difference, but as far as bang for the buck, you'll probably do better getting a proc with a higher GHz rating over a slower proc with more cores. I just built another computer for tethering in our studio using an i7-4790k... then I switched to Capture One, because it's so much faster that the difference in procs becomes insignificant.

@LDam-pf6lx9 жыл бұрын
MrKdr500 I take the "S" in 5DS to mean "Studio", which is where I think it will excel, because you can control the light so well. I think this is the market that Canon tries to take away from Medium format. The size of the photosites have very little to do with dynamic range. Go ahead and do a +6EV push on the DPR 5DS preview and compare it with the D810 or D750. The 5DS falls apart even after a just +3EV push. And this goes for both the "Full" and the "Print" (downsampled) version. In the same preview, test out the "Print" version of the low light test. Despite having more pixels to sample from when downsampled, the 5DS still loses to the D810, which has also been downsampled. What this means is that while the Canon is worse with regards to per-pixel noise, it's still also worse with full image noise. So, for anything but studio shots, I think I'd pick the D810 over the 5DS, if only camera-bodies were a consideration. www.dpreview.com/previews/canon-eos-5ds-sr/5

I'd like to know if the 50mpx Canon, or 36mpx Sony (and 50+ mpx future Sony) if the resolution is wasted on the lenses. DXO shows some of the best Sony/ lenses at 24-25 mpx in sharpness. Wouldn't that mean a 24 mpx A7II would produce detail almost the same as a 36mpx A7r? Can you see more detail in a high megapixel sensor, using the same lens? I know the 55mm Zeiss is a sharper lens, but not a focal length I use.
@TonyAndChelsea9 жыл бұрын
FilmFactry We'll cover this in the landscape video, but more megapixels gets more detail out of lenses that aren't perfectly sharp. So a lens might get 22 perceived megapixels out of a 36 MP sensor, but get 30 perceived megapixels out of a 50 MP sensor. In other words, even with mediocre lenses like the 24-105 f4, we see significantly more detail from the 5DS-R shots than from the D810 or 5D Mark III shots.
@KTMcaptain9 жыл бұрын
dxo shows your favorite nikon zoom, 24 120 f4, @ 15mp on the d750 and 17mp on the d810. so it really does matter what lens. the sigma u used was clearly a much sharper performer that benefits from higher resolving power. somehow I feel that the d750 with the sigma or tamron 150-600 would be a great nikon alternative. decent fps, great sensor, high iso performance would allow great f stop and shutter combinations, plus amazing dr at all its usable iso. combo would cost 3k, and using 12 bit lossy yields huge buffer benefits with virtually no loss in capability. I wonder how well the d5 will be. I really wish that can-kon/ni-non would make the grips add ram/buffer and allow for 8-10 fps on their ff beasts. could you imagine a modular camera that you could upgrade things like shutter, ram, viewfinder, af modules, and sensor. you could create your perfect camera for your prefered mount and upgrade it periodically as you see fit, instead of huge leaps every 4-6 years for non professionals.

@TonyAndChelsea9 жыл бұрын
Umut Sezer Koç Of those the 70D is the most capable video camera because of the focus tracking and articulating touchscreen. It has the worst still image quality, though. The D610 and a7 have about the same image quality, but the D610 has a better selection of native lenses and better focusing... but the a7 is much bigger. Are Canon's better than Nikon's for wildlife photos then? If not which Nikon do you think works best for wildlife?
@daskadse7699 жыл бұрын
Technically, I believe that Nikon features slightly better Low-Light-Performance and Dynamic Range, but the main thing why many Photographers choose Canon over Nikon are the lenses. While Nikon has some nice lenses as well, the L glass from Canon seems to be better in many aspects, and afaik (but dont quote me on this) Nikon lacks pendants to some Canon lenses (e.g. the 70-200/f2.8 L - all other lenses in this range suffer heavy focus breathing).
@TonyAndChelsea9 жыл бұрын
Amber Conover Canon has that one lens, the 400mm f5.6, which is a remarkably good value. Also, Nikon doesn't have a high-speed APS-C camera like the 7D Mark II... Nikon cameras also tend to buffer really quickly. Check our D7200 review for some useful information.

The Only One Doesn't the Canon have the worst focus breathing? Matt Granger did a great Video about this.
@TonyAndChelsea9 жыл бұрын
mrharpman The Canon 70-200 doesn't show focus breathing; the Nikon does. I don't totally understand why, but Matt tested focus breathing as a videographer would, rather than as a still photographer would.

i checked the pictures of the birds, recovered shadows still a lot noisy even at iso-100. I feel the image very detailed but when you zoom in, it s not that sharp, at the opposite of a 1dx file, few pixels but when you crop the image, it s still very sharp. Maybe it s my eyes :D
@TonyAndChelsea9 жыл бұрын
telemaq76 well, the sharpness would have more to do with the lens and the technique. If you're talking about the catbird picture, it was taken with the 400 f5.6, which is a good lens, but it's not as sharp as the 500 or 600 f4. If you want to compare sharpness with the 1DX, be sure to scale the images to the same resolution first.

How is the 300mm f/4 for wildlife if I was to use it on my 70d? The brighter aperture, IS and slightly less reach (for slower shutter) seems to make a little more sense than with the 400 f/5.6, or am I wrong here? Most of the stuff I do is walking around looking for small birds or occasionally pheasants/sparrow hawks. Not a lot of interesting birds in my area of the UK.

Wildlife photography and no mention of THE wildlife photography lens - Canon 200-400 1.4x
@TonyAndChelsea9 жыл бұрын
John Doe I consider that more of a sports lens. It would be an excellent lens for zoos or safaris with controlled environments where you could get really close, or if you're an expert-level wildlife photographer and you know that you can get within that range where you won't be shooting at the long end all the time. Most people would be shooting at the long end, with the 1.4X enabled, and thus would be better served by spending their $11k on a big prime.

Unfortunately Canon, in contrast to Nikon, which respects more the professionals who have the Nikon D850, has not presented any new firmware. He could very comfortably. She generally doesn't take care of her models. We have invested a lot of money to buy them. By force he made a new firmware for the 1dx mark iii. Could also be for the canon 5dsR. At least for digital noise and focus. Too bad. We feel cheated.
@jonathansmith63118 жыл бұрын
There's a flaw in the Manual Focusing mode on the 5Ds and 5Dsr. If you switch to manual focus in live view the magnifying frame isn't there although you can activate it by pressing the magnifying button. However, this action locks the exposure and when you move the frame around you cannot focus on bright or dark objects within the scene. The 5Ds and 5Dsr shows NO frame, then when you press the magnify button brings the frame up at x1 then x6 then x16 (exposure is locked on all) On my 5D mark 2 it shows A frame, then when you press the magnify button shows the same frame at x5 and x10 (exposure ISN'T locked on the none magnified frame but is on the x5 and x10) Why on earth would the 5Ds have a magnified frame at x1??? It doesn't do anything except lock the exposure and we don't want to lock the exposure!!
