Canon 6D Mark II vs Canon 80D: Which To Buy? I give a quick side by side test to check out the dynamic range, 1080p HD video quality and the difference with video autofocus using Canon's Dual Pixel AF system. Which do you think looked the best? Is the Canon 6D Mark II worth $2K USD? Is there a major difference to upgrade from a Canon 70D or Canon 80D to the 6D Mark 2? Let me know down below. I will have a full review on the Canon 6D Mark II over the next few weeks. I will share my honest thoughts of using the camera there. Check out my unboxing and first hands on impressions with it as well!

Both the Canon 80D and 6D Mark II are amazing cameras. Is the 6D a bit behind tech wise for 2017, yes. But does it make it a bad camera, no. It's just not future proof. I will have the full review of the 6D 2 in the next few weeks. If you want to check out my first hands on with the camera check this out here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZvcgYCpdpqneKs Here is a link to my blog with two full res images showing the shadows pulled for the dynamic range testing: bit.ly/2v5FL9c

getting my 6D2 on Tuesday! So excited. Loved my 6D and can't wait for the new AF system as well as the articulating touchscreen. I can never go back to a crop sensor. I just felt so limited with framing and the how it affected each lens. that 1.6X drove me crazy.

It's crazy to see all these people hating on Canon Cameras now days. I have been a Canon fan for many years, and I myself am interested in making the switch to Sony Mirrorless systems. However, I feel like we will never have the perfect camera one way or the other there will always be something better or newer out there. Everyone should just get something they like, that fits their budget and a camera that is capable of doing what you need it to do. Happy shooting everyone.

I just bought a 2nd 6d mark 1 yesterday. I've had my other 6d since it came out in 2012. I needed a 2nd FF camera for work but couldn't justify 2900 (CAD after taxes) when it really wouldn't improve my current work other than getting 1080/60 for video and a boost in AF performance. I paid $900 for the used 6D on craigslist. Under 10k shutter count and will compliment my current gear perfectly for the days where I need two cameras at once during weddings. I may still buy the 6D2 in a year or so if the price comes down or maybe by then I will already have enough saved for the beast that is the 1dx2!

I wanted to touch on two more points. The AF system/coverage and the price points. Both could be big factors. The 80D and 6D II have similar af systems. But the coverage is so tight in the 6D that the 80D is the clear winner with that. The other factor comes down to price. The 80D is about $1,099 USD while the 6D Mark II is $1,999 USD. So is it really worth the $800-900 difference. To me it comes down to a bit faster af and wanted full frame. It's a familiar way for a Canon 70D/80D user to jump to full frame with being used to the camera layout.

This may be an unpopular opinion... but I'd like to switch to either an 80D or 6D m2 from my Sony a6500. The image quality is awesome and there is a lot of opportunity with the Sony, but my first camera was a t2i and by learning with that I just really miss Canon. I don't like to mess around with color grading, I can't nail the photo settings with the Sony, and Canon interface is just what I prefer. Thanks for your comparison video, Eric!

I bought the 80D about 6 months ago and I’m more then happy with it. I bought a refurbished model with a shutter count of 807 on it. It came with the 18-55mm kit lens and a rode video mic pro. I use it for my KZbin channel and some armature photography. I paid $820 for everything and I’m extremely happy with the deal I got. Sony and Panasonic both seem to have really great cameras out right now but I’ve already invested in canon glass so I’m just going to patiently wait and see what cannon has to offer in the next year. Thanks for this comparison, keep these videos coming!

@Eric, there is huge brand following in India, There are just 2 brands available its either Canon or Nikon. If anyone asks for a DSLR he gets pointed to one of these brands. people don't even know about SONY Panasonic or Fuji camera here. I guess it will be same almost everywhere. And that is what selling. Other brands will have to kick up their marketing in top gear to actually cause a dent in that.

Eric Rossi Yeah, it makes sense economically. India has really poor pirchasing power parity, Anything dollars converted to indian currency is quite costly and that is why canon and Nikon sell more as people here really can not afford to experiment with new ecosystem. I will give you a real life example, I helped photographing a marriage I was second camera man and was paid 200$ , actual cameraman was paid around 800$ and this covered 3 hard printed photo albums and documentary style video coverage. It would be interesting to know how much you guys would get for same.. I have to point out in indian currency its still lot of money and we are not getting shortchanged. But issue comes up when we have to acquire better equipment for photography as they are insurmountably costly. And hence just okay cameras are poor value acquisition for us as we can not just buy and keep changing system and that is one of the reason I am not 100% happy with this body..

Eric Rossi Believe it or not but Canon are still the top company for selling detachable lens cameras, and I too was shocked when I read this. A lot of people are reading the figures wrong, Canon HAS LOST A MASSIVE AMOUNT OF UNIT SALES, but they were mostly from the point and shoot range. This used to be about 70% of their sales, it's well under 10% now, the fact it isn't high end camera is not insignificant as the mark up on these is astronomical and I honestly don't know just what percentage of their income this formed. Sony still does well in this range, you often see analogue camera users carry a Sony P&S as a composition aid/light meter as they are far superior. Plus, they can now add their detachable lens range and their mobile chip/sensors but I couldn't find in the FT article if they counted the sensors they sell to Nikon and my colleague took his paper back off me. However, camera sales as a whole are dramatically down on what they were just two years ago and it is more than likely this trend will continue, hopefully people are realising it isn't technology that takes images it just makes little bits of it a little bit easier. If you gave me a top range professional drill with a built in laser thingy for straight lines, I can guarantee you will still get a wonky shelf because I'm a useless DIYer. However, none of this really matters as these are just numbers and I'm sure someone will pull out a misquoted graph to show why this is all wrong. But as I mentioned on a previous video, all that matters is that the person who buys the camera is happy with their purchase and I second the congrats on the new camera.

"human eye has 24 stops of dynamic range". Not quite true. The absolute highest and lowest levels the eye can perceive cover 46.5 stops but the static dynamic range - ie what we perceive at any given time, is only about 6.5 EV (which is also about the DR of a print) What I'm struggling to find more about is how much HDR the eye performs and how fast. It takes considerable time for the iris to fully open, less for it to close. As we move our gaze about a scene the 6.5 EV we are seeing probably changes very quickly within a central range, making human vision somewhat akin to HDR video, but I don't know the numbers for that.

I've bought 80d few days ago. As it is now, and for what im using it i just dont need ff and for me that's the main difference. Everywhere else the difference is so small that realistically if you are using your camera properly nobody is going to notice not eaven you. Lack of 4k is just unforgivable considering when it came out and considering the price of the device. Also I expect the price drop would be quite significant where the 80d will always be good little B camera. Considering the market the 4k is a must in this price range and very very soon they'll have to make one of those. That camera will be the killer of 6Dmk2. I just dont see the buyer... If you need ff eaven then I would sooner give a little more money and take 5dmk4. The math is just not there for me...
@Eric_Rossi
@Eric_Rossi 7 жыл бұрын
I wouldnt say that, people are blowing up over 4k for no reason but thats my opinion. We wont have that debate here lol. But the 5d 4 also left a ton of people disappointed and the 4k in that is a total joke. Funny enough though the 6D II is selling well, I'd love to see the return rate though in a few months to see if people keep them.

For anyone wanting some professional looking photos and great 1080p video ( that's what the majority of youtubers shoot in) just go for the original 6D, you are getting a full frame plus it's the best when it comes to shooting in low light. The 80D is more leaning towards video mainly, you can still get some nice pictures but still not the same quality as a Full Frame. I sold my 80D and went with a 6D ( not the mark 2 ).

I have a 5D mark III. Love it's quality. But hate that it does not auto focus during video. Bought the 80D because it auto focuses on video. But miss the look of the full frame. My plan is to get a 6D mark II in 2019 so I can have that full frame feel in video. Because using my favorite EF lens doesan't work well on the cropped sensor. the lens loses something with the crop factor. So I will soon be owning both of these soon.

I can really see how both would appeal to many stills photographers, I shoot both cropped sensor and full frame cameras and I know with landscape/wildlife photography both have a distinct advantage. Full frame usually for the former and cropped sensor for the latter. But where I use the heavier 5Ds and 7DII for the weather sealing the arms would be dropping off a wedding photographer after the 14 hours they can be carrying them for. Another wonderful common sense and truthful video.

6D Mark II video looks like lower res, sharpened more. But it looks like it has better dynamic range? I cannot say this conclusively. 80D and GH5 owner. Of course, GH5 video quality looks like it's 20 years ahead of either of these cameras. In the market for either a 5D4 or a 6D2. But I'm not loving either one, but wish to go full frame Canon. Maybe I'll wait 4 more years. Thanks for the tests!

I really want the articulating screen. I know pros say they only use the viewfinder and look down on people shooting with live view but for creative shots, it opens up a lot of options shooting high, low, and extreme angles. What I want is a 5D Mark 4 with an articulating screen. I have plenty of cameras. None of them full frame. I've been itching for the right full frame Canon for 5 years, but it seems to never come. Anyways, I really appreciate you showing the 80D vs 6D Mark II video quality. It showed me everything I needed to know.

As a canon shooter, I feel a bit left behind by Canon on these new cameras they are releasing. The original 6D had a better dynamic range and a great image quality(on par with 5d mark 3). This "upgrade" seems to be worse than the original 6D in terms of image quality and Dynamic range. It's a decent camera but not an upgrade over 6D other than AF.

That is what I wanted to hear....if the image is better than the original 6D which I own one and I love the images, then I am sold. I rather not spend so much more on the 5D4 for what I do. I will wait until it drops in price, I think at this time it is priced higher that it should be. I say around $1600 is fair price. The only thing that I really wished Canon would have put in this camera was the second SD card slot.

I owned the 80D for 2 years. I upgraded to the 6D mark ii because I want to be able to use the Canon 70-200 mm f2.8 IS L lens. It's a wonderful lens but if you use it on a crop sensor camera, you have to multiply the focal length by 1.6X which is too much zoom for what I want to use it for, and really you have a DOF of f4 in that case. But after getting the 6D I notice it has much much better low light capability than the 80D. I bought it with the kit L lens, and I notice a difference in quality between this kit lens and the 80D. But these nice L lenses also come with a bigger price tag. Somehow I feel more confident with a full frame camera. And it's important to point out that the view finder in a full frame camera is bigger and brighter, so you can actually see what you want to photograph. It doesn't have the popup flash that I never used, so I like that.

Hey there, I've been using my 60D since 2011 and was ready to upgrade. I had my mind set on the 80D but have also been interested in going full frame with the 6D MK ii. I currently own 1 EF lens and there 4 are EF-S lenses. I would be purchasing either camera along as well as new glass. I mainly do landscape and wildlife photography. Other than the 6D Mkii being full frame, is there any other benefits to leaving crop sensors? I wish there were more upgrades in the MKii. That would make the decision alot easier!
@Eric_Rossi

It doesnt sound like you need the full frame. Since you are into wildlife as well, the crop sensor helps a lot. Plus the 80D is a huge step up over the 60D in my opinion.

Thats what I’ve been leaning toward. I would say 80% landscapes and 20% wildlife . I also take my child’s photos as well. I just don’t know if jumping to the 6d mkii is worth the extra $1000 or so. I was going to get the 16-35 f4 usm lens if I went with full frame. I do however enjoy Astro photography as well and hope the 80ds iso settings would be a large enough change from the 60d which is lacking.

Both of them are amazing cameras... as you say Eric. I have the 70D and the 6D Mk II.... I'm not much of a videographer... but for picture, the 6D Mk II performs better in low light... What I mean is that it will hit focus quicker because it's FF... and there is less noise in the shadows. - But wait, there's more... There's a rumor that the EOS 90D is coming out in a couple of months. Already the 6D MkII is being discounted... (great bargain, IMO)... and I'm sure that the 80D will be slashed as well. I'm a little nervous to upgrade to a 90D because I have desktop photo-editing SW... I don't want to be forced to have to pay monthly for that, just because they can't handle the newer format. So when the 90D comes out, I'll probably upgrade my 70D for an 80D.

Thanks for the practical review / comparison. I still love my 80D, the 6D mkii doesn't have enough to differentiate, so my full frame jump may be a clean used 5D mkiv, or I'll just wait for the 5D mkv. My prediction is that we will see canon introduce quite a few new features in the 7D mkiii, including usable 4K video, which will then carry down to the 90D and every other model going forward.

Hello, What do you suggest? I got a t5i and looking forward to make a heavy leap when I have the money. I do mostly NIGHT VIDEOGRAPHY so I reaaally need that low light capability. I've gathered that it isn't wise to move from crop to crop (so I'm gonna leave the 80d out of this) rather keep buying lenses that would do until one has the money to go all-in full frame. Which would you suggest? The 6D mii, the Sony a7sii or the 5d m iii. I really don't care about 4k, low light and AF are the priority here. Thanks
@Eric_Rossi
@Eric_Rossi 6 жыл бұрын
well no doubt the better low light will be the sony a7s ii. hands down. But it also night videography you cant just rely on ISO, so light is needed regardless. So if you have good light, most of these will be fine. But video alone, a7s. But also do you need a tilt or flip screen?

lenses are very important, mostly over the cameras. But the t5i I know isnt the best for low light. Just comes down to what you can spend and what you want. Maybe a fast lens would be good in the mean time. But for a flip screen, theres really only Canon at that point.

6d Mark II vs X-H1 for 1080p video? Which one you prefer?
@Eric_Rossi
@Eric_Rossi 5 жыл бұрын
For what I would like, features wise and such I would take the 6D II. The X-H1 has a few better options though plus IBIS. I just like the flip screen that canon offers. But you get a bit more with the Fuji.

Hey Eric, Thanks for the review. I currently own the 80D, I love the camera however my goal is to enter the full frame world. I'd like to keep my 80D because I really enjoy shooting video with it. Would you recommend the original 6D in 2017 or save up and go for the 6D Mark II?

6D is a great camera, pretty affordable. If you arent interested in the 6d mark 2, ever look into a used 5D Mark 3?

@@Eric_Rossi Just stumbled upon this video in my research. I’ve current got the 80D and am looking to upgrade to full frame. Am debating between 6Dm2 or 5Dm3. Found a local guy selling used 5Dm3 for $750 in excellent condition and 29k shutter count. Would love your thoughts… I like the “bells and whistles” on 6Dm2, as it’s similar to what I’ve grown accustomed to on 80D (articulating screen, wifi, etc). But $750 for a good 5Dm3 seems like a sweet deal if I’m willing to go back to basics. Help a girl out! TIA!

Like what I'm seeing and hearing. So far it looks like a good investment . Are you going to test it in low lighting? I shoot quite a bit at sunrise and sunset.

What sould i get for both video and photo? 6d mark ii, gh5 or omd em 1 mark ii?
@Eric_Rossi
@Eric_Rossi 6 жыл бұрын
that depends on your budget and what you need, one is full frame the others are mirrorless. If you want 4K, the GH5 is your choice. Personally I like the 6D Mark II if given the choice.
