Have you considered breaking these down into slightly more manageable chunks or else releasing them with a table of contents in order to skip around to the segments that are of particular interest? I know that I at any rate like to return to particular parts of videos because there were particular lines that I felt were insightful, something like a table of contents or breaking these long videos up would make finding those lines easier (for me at any rate)

One thing I have been concerned about in the 6Dmkii is night sky photography (ie, high ISO)s. The original 6D is still highly regarded to this day in terms of performance in astrophotography. Some preliminary things I have seen show worse performance in the mkii than the original. What are the odds we can get you to do some night time/night sky photos with the 6Dmkii to see how it performs at higher ISOs? 😅

Jared Polin Fantastic review, as always, Jared. You're the best on KZbin when it comes to real world reviews and probably the fairest reviewer of all in talking about the experience. Tony Northrup used to be similar, but he's turned into more of a spec-head these days and his so-called review of the 6DII was just an insult, quite frankly. He's lost track of his roots (what photography is all about). The 6DII is not for me, but it's a good camera and you did it justice and did a great job of highlighting the good and the bad. Keep up the excellent work, it's very much appreciated.

I have the Canon 5D mark IV and wanted a second camera for leisure so I wouldn't ruin my good camera. So I took the plunge on the 6D2 with low expectations and just wanting it for going camping and other more risky shoots where I wouldn't want to hurt the 5D4. I'm finding myself using this camera more and more. The image quality is nearly identical to the 5D4 in my opinion. And with the articulating screen I can do different angles. Now I take them both when I have a paid shoot so I don't have to swap lenses. When mounted with the Tamron 24-70 2.8 G2 it works like a charm.

My biggest takeaway from these real-world review videos (which are great, btw) is that the photographer matters so much more than the camera. Put a 1DX Mark II in my hands and a 100D in Jared's hands and set us both loose at the same event - and I am 100% sure that Jared will walk away with the better photos. Don't get me wrong - there are important differences between cameras and when you really *need* to upgrade it makes sense to do your homework. But for someone like me who already owns a decent camera + lenses, I would get much better results spending my time and money just getting out into a place with interesting subjects than I would if I upgraded my camera.

I own 6d too. It's a great camera but for the autofocus. Tried shooting birds in flight and I was sweating. The multi point AF was very hit and miss and kept picking up background, there is just too much air in between the points. The sensor and mechanics of the camera are great for the current price, no doubt but if you are shooting moving subjects you are down to old school methods, the camer is not helping you much. I can live with it as ana amateur but the number of photos I reject after inspection is high even if I shoot at f/8 to give the AF some leeway.

Current pricing has the 6Dmkii at $1200.... so I am "upgrading" from my 5Dmkii. This new 6D has MUCH more dynamic range than my old 5D, and the current 5Div misses the mark for me, with a NON-articulating LCD display. While I'm sad about some of the compromises mentioned, I am excited to get this 6Dii for $1200!!

Great review! I bought this body as soon as it came out , and as an upgrade from the "original" 6D. As a landscape/macro photographer, I needed the fully articulated screen and the increase in megapixels. I don't care about frame rate, since I shoot carefully composed photos (i.e., SLOW), and I don't care about video (but yeah, the omission of 4K is dumb). I, too, read about the supposed deficiencies in regards to dynamic range, and in practice I found those complaints to be bullshit, and obviously made by people who are clueless. I do agree that the focus points clumped in the middle is stupid and a PITA to deal with, but this review never touched on shooting in Live View, which I do very often. In Live View, you can focus from edge to edge. My only other nit to pick with many reviews, including this one, is the whining about the single card slot. Seriously, how often do you all have a card fail? I've NEVER had that problem, even going back to cameras that used CF cards. I use high-quality cards, mostly SanDisk, and have never had a problem. So, the single card slot complaint is just silly.
@unbroken10104 жыл бұрын
Okay number one year landscape photographer you should never be concerned with Focus points you should know how to Zone Focus.. number two since when is SanDisk the best cards? Are you whining about not having 4K your eyes don't even see that way it's a headache.. most people don't even have the computer storage or processing to edit. I think it's Ansel Adams Ted take beautiful exposures without l live view I think you should be capable of that too.. you needed a fully articulating screen really you know some of the best landscape photography has been done with medium and large format last I checked there was no articulating screen

Hey Jared, you can recompose and use continuous focus. You just have to use the back button focus, release it and recompose. The shutter button will not focusing after that if it was deactivated on the shutter button. That what I do all the time with my 6D and all its focus points in the center of the viewfinder... I agree, recomposing is not the ideal way to do, but I deal with the gear I have... I use back button focus for years and I can't go back to the shutter button focus, that's so much more efficient...

I own a 1DX Mark II and I've got this camera as well. I am not a Canon fanboy, I also own gear from other brands like Fujifilm and Sony, it just happens that I really like Canon's system and reliability. They get the job done. I think the 6D Mark II it's a good and cheap FF Canon camera, Canon cameras are built like tanks and are easy to use all day. Is it perfect? No camera is, and Jared it's on point when he says that this is a business, I never expected the 6D2 to be a cheaper 5D4. If this is going to be your very first 2K camera you would probably consider other options depending on what you are shooting or interested to shoot or If you do video or not. But if you are a 6D user looking for an upgrade, 5D3 user looking for a second body or you have invested in Canon glass, don't be afraid of the bad reviews of this camera, Its really great, I'm liking it a lot, with the same friendly Canon ecosystem, same colors as my 1DX2, and like this photographer is saying, if you know it's limitations and know what you are doing you will get very good results giving you back your investment really fast since it's cheap. In order to judge this camera you have to put it against other $ 2K FF cameras and always try it on your own first. After all, we all have different needs, styles and workflows. Nice Review.

Uriel Santisteban To be honest. I'm strongly considering this camera because I love canon Glass. My only problem with this is the exclusion of the Dual card slot. it seems more of an underhanded move then negligence. But I'm not in a position to get a 5D model so it seems I don't have a choice.

Lots of very valid points. It's the photographer not the camera. Stop worrying about specs and work on technique. My 6d is plenty good enough but as a semi-pro I need more than one camera. At about 2000 frames a week I worry about shutter life more than anything. All I can say is that compared to all my old film cameras and working in the dark room, life is simple now. Seems to me the biggest worriers about all this are Wedding Photogs that screw up and need the DR to save their ass. Ask about DR on Kodachrome 25. You had better understand about lighting with that, how to use gradient filters ON the camera, not in post! This camera looks like a good value to me and since I invested in Canon 12 yrs ago seems like the way to go-on a budget

You continue to make me impressed by the 6D2. I almost exclusively use point auto focus, and almost always center weighted, in my style and preferred subject matter. I do not feel that the scrunched up AF points will be an issue, though I will miss the spread on my 80D, since I do occasionally use the zone AF (maybe 1 shot in 100). I am semi-pro, mostly an enthusiast gone crazy. I can not justify the cost of a 5D4, but the 6D2 is an attractive prospect to start getting into full frame. Nice review. Concerning the "zone af" modes, consider that - by design - the camera tries to focus the nearest subject to the camera, in the selected area. This is mentioned also in the user manual. So, if the selected area covers a zone with objects at different distances from the camera, and you want to pinpoint the focus on a specific part of the frame, the zone af option is not always the best choice. Sadly, differently from other models, like 5d mark IV, 1dx mark II and 7d mark II, there is not the option to select a single af point, with the addition of a "cluster" of af points surrounding it (af point expansion), in the way that the camera begins to track from the selected af point, and automatically change the af point during the "af tracking". Concerning the area af coverage, for sure the 5d mark IV is better, but not by much. The 5d mark IV offers an additional column of af points per side, and you pass from a horizontal coverage of 38-40% to 53%. Consider that the 80d has a 62% horizontal af coverage, and on the 7d mark II is even better (70% and more). In every case, I think that the problem is due to the small size of the body: to use a larger af unit you need to upsize the secondary mirror, and this requires space. Indeed, the 5d mark IV is bigger and heavier. With an aps-c sensor you can use a much smaller af unit, to obtain the same coverage, and hence the size of the body is less relevant. For the same reason it is difficult to construct a viewfinder with 100% coverage, since the pentaprism and mirrors of the 6d mark II are much larger than those of an 80d, and the body sizes are very close. At least, if you want to maintain the camera body compact.

The shutter on my 6D MK 1 failed a couple days ago and I needed a working camera ASAP cause I do some professional work. I'm looking forward to using this, I use back-button focus so the issue with focus points probably won't affect me much. I heard about the 'issue' with dynamic range after buying the camera which is a little bit of a let-down, but realistically probably won't be much of a problem. I'm hoping to get some good use from this upgrade. Thanks for the great video, this was very informative and provided me some additional confidence in this camera body.

What I do with the 6D is I use only servoAF and I remove AF from the half press shutter, then I depress the AF-on rear button while I need to focus. Of course I still have the problem with the only center point being capable, but I can recompose in a servoAF situation. Single shot AF really sucks in any moving target situation.

Jared, I really like and appreciate your real world reviews. I think people get very hung up on specifications versus how workable the camera is in actual use. I also appreciate that you just tell it like it is... the good and the bad... without coming across as brand biased. I think that the truth is that most of the full frame offerings from any manufacturer these days likely outperforms anything we photographers can do anyway. I have the Canon 5D IV and I know without a doubt it is a more capable piece of equipment than I am capable as a photographer.
@kevinmcgovern51703 жыл бұрын
Hi Jared. Thanks for the great YT channel. When you say the 6DMKii has old technology, are you mostly referring to the lack of 4K? Is it also the use of an 80D AF system that isn't sized to the larger sensor? Is there something else that's not current? I think I could live with these 2 deficiencies. I have no desire to have a hybrid digital camera anyway. I just want a photo setup. My current camera is an EOS Elan 7E film SLR. I've been using Provia and Ecktachrome E100 in it. So I might not miss the dynamic range that the 6DMKii lacks. And I usually use lock focus and recompose, since the Elan 7E only has 7 focusing points. But I do hate shelling out $1,400 for an out of date camera body. A big plus toward this camera for me is that I have a very nice Sigma 28-105 f/2.8-4 aspherical lens that I won't part with. So much so that I will wait until Canon comes out with something I'll be happy with and stick with my Elan until then (market shrinkage). Another thing I like about the 6DMKii is that it isn't top heavy with buttons and features. But the price needs to come down, or is that the price of admission to the inexpensive world of digital photography? I bought a $400 scanner recently, so that has me putting on the brakes as well. To sum up, is this the camera for me ($1000 - $1500) or should I be patient?

Good review. However a point: saying that 1/8000s for shutter speed is found in more expensive gear is absolutely wrong, since it is found in smaller bodies such as the 70D, the 80D and the 7D mark II. So why, since they are a business, would they offer less (yet relatively smaller, but still smaller) features than the lower bodies that cost half the price if not the same? Yes, I get it's an "entry-level", but it's still a 2000 dollars camera, not a 350 dollars with rebates.
@Georgeinthejungle7 жыл бұрын
Giuseppe Pipia APS-C shutters have to travel less distance to cover the frame, hence it is a bit simpler to have higher flash sync speeds (ie 1/250) and faster shutter speed (ie 1/8000) without the more advanced designs of the FF shutter
@GiuseppePipia7 жыл бұрын
Oh come on! Like it is something very difficult to manufacture! If it were present only on the 1DX then yes, I'd agree with you, but not on this case, since the shutter mechanism is pretty much IDENTICAL for any full-frame camera. They just have to do some messing around. Not talking about flash-sync speeds, but also that 1/180 is ridiculous, since they could have done it easily to 1/200, updating it from the 6D mark I, instead keeping it the same.
@OutlawFarmersRC7 жыл бұрын
The Sony A7II has 1/8000 shutter speed and it is their entry level FF camera. Plus it has more features and a better and faster focus point spread across the sensor for $500 less than this junk.
@boudewijnj.m.kegels51987 жыл бұрын
For the shutter to go 'faster', the 2nd curtain just has to start earlier. This renders your shutter speed/time. Now if you want to eliminate rolling shutter effect for as far as possible, the curtains have to travel faster at short shutter times. But that is something that only becomes visible with very fast moving objects.

Great review! I just bought this camera! My last camera had a fixed 50mm lens, 6 focus points (I think it had that many) and 6.3 Mpixel sensor. Its easy for us to forget that SLR's were fully manual 'Stills' cameras with no auto focus or electronics for decades before the digital age. Its only recently people started relying on them for video too. I'm blown away by them having GPS, Bluetooth, WiFi. Now if we can just make a zoom lens for under a $1,000! 😀

Jared, you joust! I learn something every time I watch your videos... I have an ancient 5D Mk II and am invested in Canon glass. This seems like a very logical upgrade for me... Where do you recommend I look for the best price on this body?
@MaximMuir7 жыл бұрын
If you are coming from a 5D II (as I was) you will love it. Apparently though, this reason is not acceptable to some people. If a camera does not behave like a 5,000 dollar camera for 2,000, it sucks and that is all that matters. All the entitled negative vitriol on KZbin gets exhausting.
@MarkJones-zg6si7 жыл бұрын
Maxim Muir , thanks for your input and definitely appreciate hearing from a 5D Mk II owner... I am looking for improvements in the ability to shoot at higher ISOs as I shoot with available light. It appears that improvements have been made as far as noise is concerned. Jared's complaint about the zone autofocus is justified. I tried it long on my 5D and it didn't work properly. However, the follow focus on the 6D will make shooting live action much better than my 7 year old 5D! Once you nail it on the first shot that is... To Jared Polin, I learn something EVERY TIME I watch you videos! My photography skill level was elevated after I bought the 'Getting Out of Auto' video in December 2013... I've been shooting RAW since!
@MaximMuir7 жыл бұрын
@Mark Jones-from my limited tests in high ISO, ISO 12,800 is a touch better than ISO 3200 on the 5DII, and it definitely does not have the purple blooming in the shadows @6400 like the 5D mark II exhibited, so that performance should please you very much. I do see purple blooming creeping into 25,600, but I doubt I will ever push it that far. Regarding "poor dynamic range" at low ISO. This does not phase me, since most of my shooting is tripod bound, so I routinely do 5 bracketed shots -2, -1, 0, +1, and +2 for everything in live view in high speed burst, and I can either process the balanced shot, or blend all five. I never want my shots to have a flat HDR look, so I always process back in some deep shadows, but it gives me flexibility. And yes, I know it can't be used for moving subjects, but that has been my established shooting style since the days of 4x5 view cameras that I used to shoot. Tripod adverse people who insist on 15 stops of dynamic range should look elsewhere, instead of being resentful that Canon did not give you a 5,000 dollar camera for 2,000 dollars. The articulating screen is a dream come true for a tripod bound shooter like me, and the touch DP autofocus is great. Yes, I am fully away of all the complained about limitations-if Canon had included an articulating screen on a 5D mark IV, I probably would have gone that route, but they didn't, and so here I am enjoying the camera anyway. Mark, if you want to see samples from a non celebrity, you can check out these recent shoots of mine with the 6D Mark II: anscochrome.zenfolio.com/p207514531 anscochrome.zenfolio.com/p110793138 anscochrome.zenfolio.com/p185139854 anscochrome.zenfolio.com/p757138859

Great review Jared! So many bad reviews out there of this camera, and they all focus on tech specs. But I like how you bring all the negative hype down a notch by consistently reminding us that skill is, at the very least, as important as the gear we use. I think you did a great job with this review and I whole heartedly agree that most critics are blowing this more out of proportion than maybe it should be. For me personally, the biggest negative is the price. I would be happy to pay 1300, maybe even up to 1500, for this camera, but 2000 is the only thing holding me back. Other than that, I would be content with the pros and cons of this camera for a more reasonable price. Thanks for the review, best I have seen yet for the 6DMii!

One can argue that the 6D2 is good as in "good enough". But the question should rather be what camera offers more for the money. What camera is the best buy? The 6D2 has similar DR as the much cheaper 80D where the 80D has more spread out AF points. Buying a used 5D3 can also be a better choice depending on your priorities, not to mention the other brands.
@alexanderhugestrand7 жыл бұрын
Marek Bartnik Why shouldn't they be compared if they have similar image quality? The only thing that differs is the angle of view and depth of field given a lens. I've seen 5D3s at 8000 exposures (as good as new) for about $1500, which should be enough to motivate people to consider it as an option.
@alexanderhugestrand7 жыл бұрын
Marek Bartnik Whatever your personal opinion is on used cameras doesn't dictate whether someone else might find a used camera with better IQ a better choice. It's up to everyone to decide for him/herself. And no, full frame is not always superior. The 6D2 has older tech than the 80D, which makes them comparable in terms of IQ. It's in fact the lenses that makes all the difference, not the sensor.
@oscarbaezsoria16507 жыл бұрын
Sorry, the sensor is VERY important in IQ. A FF has better IQ than a crop, given the same lenses. So you are indeed INCORRECT.
@alexanderhugestrand7 жыл бұрын
Oscar Baez Soria, yes, given the SAME lens at the same aperture. But with an equivalent lens (larger aperture than FF lenses) you get exactly the same IQ. Watch Tony and Chelsea's videos and you'll know what I talk about. Also, sensor generation matters. I doubt that a 5D original beats a 80D for instance. Size isn't everything.

My first full frame on a tight budget? Jared here is one big thank you for an honest & balanced review. There are better cameras if the budget was flexible, I’d choose Nikon today. I’ve Started with Canon and have gathered a few lens and accessories. After the many troubling reviews posted the mark ii prices have been beaten down. I found one for $1200 new. 6D mark ii for $1200 and I said “sold” after seeing that you could get some nice shots with nice colors and enough dynamic range. 👍

Great review. Finally a real life review Instead of a "pixel peeping" review. I love how people expect the 5D MK4 in a 6D MK2 body at the 6D MK2 price. I see this all the time. Watch the Nikon entry full frame users will now want the new 850D in the entry level camera!! Canon, Nikon, etc., all have to make differences between models. The great thing is for buyers, if you don't like the camera you have a lot of choices to buy something that you think is great. For those who missed all the 5D MK4 things you can just buy the 5D4 or even an old 5D3 camera and stop knocking a camera you don't even own.

Each camera has its pros and cons, but I 'm a simple amateur and it seems to me when I read all the anti 6D2 comments, that everybody's a professional photographer, which I am not. So , 6D2 is a very good gear. And my ambition is not to move up tu 5D4 but rather to go for a 7D mk3 as a second body. Cheers ! (NB : I move Canon Glasses ...).

I still shoot with the (old) 6D and I absolutely love it. Even now in 2018 with so many new camera's on the market. At some point you realize you can make almost every shot you need (and I have to say, the 20Mpix of the Eos 6D are more than enough for 99% of the things I shoot). Oke, heavy cropping might be a problem with 20Mpix compared to the many 40+ Megapixel DSLR/Mirrorless camera's but the good thing is that it will force you to go closer to the subject faster because you know you can't crop so much in post (and it depends on how big you want to print your photo's in the end ofcourse).

"Retouching" and post-processing RAW files is not the same thing. None of the portraits have been retouched. Great review Jared Polin, but I do wish you would give a little more of your opinions you were a tad diplomatic in places and I got the impression you were holding back. Was waiting for this camera but have been so disappointed with the reviews and it had put me off. Am primarily a landscape photographer so the dynamic range issue is a concern as i quite often pull shadows in a single image and don't want to have to bracket. But then I came to a realisation, I'm coming from a 60d from which I have always gotten good results, the 6d mark ii has to be a good improvement on that right? Would appreciate your opinion thanks

I am going to shoot landscape tomorrow I have a T6S and a T5I and I think to a lot of people that may not seem top of the line cameras but I enjoy shooting with these, I think Jared is right when he's saying that the body is somewhat irrelevant, good glass is very important so I have the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8, Sigma 50-100mm F1.8 and the Tamron 70-200mm F2.8 DI USD VC and with these lenses I almost get the results of A Full Frame, in the long run I might be interested in the 6D mark II I think I'll wait until the price comes down a bit. I thank Jared for an honest review and the limitations of the camera should not hold anybody-back I think. Thanks again!!!!

Great review Jared. I think you did a good job of being objective and fair. I have the original 6D and it works for most of what I do. The deal killer for me with the 6D Mark II is those focus points all clumped in the middle. My only real issue with my original 6D is the lack of focus points (which I knew going in and have learned to work around many of the other drawbacks). I was hoping for much a much wider focus point spread. I'll have to keep saving and looking for something else.

I, as you, want the focus points all the way to edge of the viewfinder and niether the Canon 6D mark 2 nor the Nikon D750 do. The focus points are in the center third of the viewfinder. How disappointing. I did notice that when I use the LCD display, that the FPs do get closer to the edge of the frame on both cameras. I'll have to take a look at the mirrorless ones now.

About the lack of joy stick though, you can actually scroll the AF point up down with you thumb using the back dial, while scroll the AF point left right with your index finger, using the top dial. Which is much faster than the joy stick. The reasoning is, say, if you want to move an AF point 5 steps to the left with a joy stick, you need to press and release 5 time. But with the dial, you just slide the dial 5 clicks in 1 single stroke. Working with you thumb together with your index finger on the fly is faster than clicking with you thumb alone. You just need some time to get used to it.

Gee, for god sake, this camera is bad compared to the competitors. Its not a BAD camera, but if you compare to whats in the market, its just meh. Not enough contrast in the images to test teh dynamic range. Dynamic range is something you dont care until you care. Overcast day isnt a really problem to most cameras, too much light bouncing around.
@StephanEilert7 жыл бұрын
Needs a 1 frame to get a good photo in action (sports) but you are not a professional sports photographer. You shot Hockey, you have a camera that shoots 12 fps and you know how important fps are important to predict some shots. Try shooting a professional sports event that you need to nail the shots. I shoot with a 5d mk iii and 7d mk ii (sold 7d mk ii), and it was muuuuuuuuuuuuch easier to get the moments on the 7d mk ii, than on 5d mk iii in soccer. For other sports I can handle very well the slow fps on 5d mk iii, but in soccer I find that 10-12 fps is a must.
