In this video, I take a look at how the Sigma 50-100 compares to the Canon 70-200 when used on a Super 35 and APS-C sensor.

You mentioned you wouldn’t use the 50-100 for sports photography. I’m curious why. I have a 70-200 Tamron, and I like it, but I thought the 1.8 would open even more doors for me. Is there enough difference between the 1.8 and 2.8 to purchase the 50-100? I have an eos R7, and I’m usually shooting indoor sports like basketball and hockey. Thank you!

@@CameronYoos I think the reason I said this is that the Canon has a much faster autofocus system, when paired with a Canon body. Just be aware the 50-100 is a super 35 lens, so you’re 70-200 on the R7 is actually giving you more reach than the 50-100 would

I must have watched this video three times recently. I think I might go with the Sigma 50-100mm. Mostly because it would match so well with the 18-35mm and I’ve found myself needing something a bit more than 35mm. With this I can have a nice minimal lens kit 11-16mm, 18-35, and 50-100mm on the GH5. I figure if I do need more range I can use Ex tele convert to crop in. Thanks James!

I think the 50-100mm is a solid choice, especially on the GH5. The combo of the speedbooster with the M43 sensor and the image stabilisation sounds like a winning trio to me! I only haven't bought one because it covers pretty much half the ground as the 70-200 I've already got and that I keep poaching a friend of mine's when we are on shoots together! I'll look out for your video on it :-)

Hi Jason, As great as the Sigma 50-100mm is, you'll get more out of the 70-200 because of the sensor size of the R5. Whats making you think the Sigma is the better fit for your R5?

I'm wondering if I should jump on this camera to round out my f1.8 reach up to 100 on my R7. I just got the Sigma 18-35 f1.8. I also do have the Sigma 17-50 f2.8 and Sigma 18-300 f3.5-6.3, which has some macro. Though I have the range covered, being able to bring my aperture down to 1.8 up to 100mm opens a lot of options.

It’s a lens I regret not purchasing. Like you I have the 18-35 and on my EVA it’s been fantastic. Considering jumping to the FX30 now and with the MC11, the performance is flawless in my tests with the 18-35. A great fit for your R7 with a good couple Of ND filters

Top notch! I’m moving from the C100 I to the GH5, I own the sigma 18-35mm now and it pretty much stays on my camera. I’m curious though which one of these would be the best option to get in the future. Or maybe even picking up a prime tele lens, because I don’t really find myself grabbing a tele lens

Hi Nate, I too am considering the jump from the C100 but to the GH5S. I think these lenses are fantastic for the GH5 as it's got IBIS. When are you making the switch?
@NatesFilmTutorials
@NatesFilmTutorials 5 жыл бұрын
James Watts I purchased the GH5 a few weeks ago, so I’ve already switched, meanwhile I’m waiting to sell the C100. The C100 is an amazing camera though, there’s a lot to like about it, I wished Canon would implement some features like that in a more affordable camera. That’s good to now that these lenses perform similarly, will keep it in mind for my future upgrades

@@NatesFilmTutorials I'm with you there. If the C200 was more affordable I would be jumping to that. Heck if a C100 Mark III came out and it was exactly the same as the C200 just without the RAW format, I would be there.

Nicely done. I wish you would have compared bokeh at similar focal ranges. I prefer my 50-100 in almost all cases over the 70-200. Including indoor sports on a 7d mar ii. I never hand hold video with a 70-200. I also have a 7d ii and c100 as well as all of the lenses you mentioned (both sigmas and the 70-200) My go to hand held lens for video is the canon 18-135mm is nano. It has amazing is, smooth auto focus, a great range and very respectable iq, the only down side for me is the slow f stop.

Looking back on this video I should have showed a few more examples of the images from both lenses. I've had more shoots lately using the 50-100 and it is a lovely lens. The handheld test I did in this video which showed video was meant to highlight the example of what the IS does rather than actually use it handheld for video. I thought it would be better to see it in action rather than just two images side by side. The C100 and 7D Mark II do make a great pair. I've not tried the 50-100 in a sports shooting environment, how does the AF handle it?
@allenadventures5407
@allenadventures5407 6 жыл бұрын
I haven't done any high tech tests, and i am not shooting professional sports. But I think it handles af pretty good. I haven't been disappointed or found myself thinking "i wish the af was faster or more accurate. i have seen a lot of reviews that say the af accuracy can be off. I even bought the usb dock. but my copy has been spot on and i have never even used the dock.

Just curious, do you know if the Canon EOS 90D has internal Image Stabilization to make up for the lack of it on Sigma lenses?
@jw_film
@jw_film 3 жыл бұрын
Sadly not. The Canon DSLR range don't have sensor stabilisation but their newer R5 and R6 do, though they are full frame cameras, so the Sigma wouldn't work on those without heavy vignetting.

Im planning to pick up the bmpcc 6k pro, i already got the sigma 18-35. Should i go for the 50-100 or canon 70-200. The only thing is the 6k dont got no IBIS
@jw_film
@jw_film 2 жыл бұрын
The 50-100 is more suited to the BMPCC 6k because of the super-35 sensor. Honestly, I've never user either of those lenses handheld, always on sticks (unless I've been shooting stills) so I've never needed IBIS of the stabiliser of the 70-200. My work is almost all corporate, so my cameras are on sticks all day long. What would you be shooting with the 6K Pro and either of those lenses?

Hey there! I haven't tested this, so take everything I say here with a pinch of salt, but I can't see why this lens wouldn't work with the R7 and the RF-EF adapter. That being said, I haven't tested this so I don't have any knowledge as to whether it would. I switched over to Panasonic 3 years ago so my Canon knowledge stopped there. Sorry I can't be of more help on this.
