the AA battery tray saved the day when I was at an air show shooting last year because I forgot to charge both of the batteries for my t4i and they died half way through the show but fortunately I brought along the AA tray loaded with charged AA batteries and they got me through the rest of the show. Now I always carry it in my bag for emergencies.

You are absolutely correct! If you are going to use a battery grip for your camera why wouldn't you get the one that is made specifically for your camera? The 7D grip will have the magnesium body and the same weather sealing as the camera it fits on, the 80D grip will have the same aluminum/ polycarbonate resin frame, body and weather sealing as the camera it was made for. So trying to save a few bucks could just cause you a ton of headaches in the long run.

I have a battery grip on my Rebel T3i and I'm definitely going to get another one when I upgrade to the 7D mark II.

Michael - I have a T3i with battery grip, and just upgraded to the 7D Mark II and bought a battery grip for this camera, making it a beast in size and weight. In appearance and performance, it's a pro-level camera.

I've always found it off that the AA battery caddy was inserted inside the grip compared to the Canon battery caddy...

+Dan Carr... You mention using rechargeable AA batteries. Canon recommends standard LR6s. They don't say anything about NR6s rechargeable Nimh batteries. What's your opinion about this discrepancy?

I bought a battery grip for my 6D and I think I have only used it like twice. Feels so much heavier and makes it very uncomfortable to hold. I think it is useful if you are doing portraits and shooting vertically. I just carry a few extra batteries for my 7D M2 when I go wildlife shooting. And believe me the lighter the better.

agreed... I was thinking of getting one for my 7d Mark 2 and changed my mind... I bought one for my t3i and it made it so heavy.

I bought one because it looks more professional. I don’t care about how it works I want to look cool

I have a third party grip, which I have to say Im very pleased with. I’ve taken over 400 images, at about -4°c without losing more than a bar, which speaks more about the batteries than the grip. But they are useful for just having that extra battery because the less you have to fiddle around in the cold the better. I use a sidekicker gimbal head and spinning your camera round in its colour and you are straight on to your buttons is great for the speed you need to work with wildlife.

It is heavy, and very sturdy. Magnesium-Aluminum alloy construction, like the 7D2 body.

im new to the battery grip thing, wanting to get this for my camera, does the grip just hold 2 batteries or can it hold a third? I shoot video and photos so I'd imagine i would still be able to burn through batteries. Would you suggest having 4 batteries so you can swap for video? Also what's the best route to charge a large number of batteries at the same time?
@Nurg19828 жыл бұрын
+John McConnell The grip will never get more space than 2 original rechargeable batteries, or as mention 4 AA batteries. Also, there is no hot swappable option either, you'd have to change batteries on the fly. That said, having 2 batteries instead of 1 greatly increases operation times. Also, if in studio setting, you could opt for a DC power connection to keep things going.

+Frans van Terwisga I use the grip on my 7d but recently bought a 5dm3 and dont have a grip. I ended up taking the grip off the 7d as I like the light weight. Having to swap batteries isn't that big of a deal to me.

I have battery grips for my cameras. I find that the extra battery drives lenses better and you can shoot all day long.

I don't see the point really.. (except for the added option of AA batteries).. All that expense and extra weight just to add one extra battery.. It's easy to keep a battery in your pocket and quickly swap them out... It may well be handy for uninterrupted video but for stills its not really an issue...

It allows you to use the same hand position, and controls, whether you're shooting vertical or horizontal. Especially useful when using a long lens.
