I am portrait photographer and have used primarily the Canon EF 85/1.4 L IS on my EOS R camera for portraits (and events) but since I purchased this RF 85/2 Macro I have not used the 85/1.4 L IS lens all that often. Do not get me wrong, I love how the EF 85/1.4 L IS renders but the new RF 85/2 Macro (which is probably more like 80mm) does have incredible "pop" in the photographs which I appreciate very much. I still keep the EF 85/1.4 L IS for the shoots where I intend to use more of the 1.4 magic but lately it just stays at home when RF 85/2 Macro is working. I also love the size and weight and reliable and relatively fast focus. When I view thru the photographs in LR after each gig I immediately recognise images taken with RF 85/2 Macro. IMHO Canon really nailed it with this lens!

Yeah I rarely use an 85 1.8 at 1.8, and more often at 2.8 or higher. Even at 2.8 you can turn the background to mush at body shot range, and at headshot range the bokeh could even be said to be too smooth, losing all definition and character as if your subject is shot in front of a backdrop of gradients.

@blue sky bonsai , I'd be interested to know how you got on with the Canon 85MM F2 for video work. I mainly shoot video so to me the canon makes sense with the IS but a lot of people have posted reviews saying the autofocus is too slow for video, with the main issue being if it loses focus and goes to one extreme it takes a long time to come back.
@BlueSkyBonsai3 жыл бұрын
@@DTSquared For video on a tripod the 85/2 is flawless. It locks on and stays perfectly focussed. You can see an example in my video "Bonsai Care - how to repot a bonsai tree - 5 Reasons to not repot". But handheld, moving around, even on a good gimball, I can't trust it to keep focus on the subject. The problem is not how slow it is (you can avoid that issue by selecting near focus or far focus); the problem is it just doesn't lock on the focus while you move around. You can see it hunting forward and backward rather than locking focus. There's an example of how that looks in this video: "How to prune a bonsai tree | Winter pruning a Trident Maple bonsai". I was trying to focus on a branch at 40 seconds into the video, for about 20 seconds while I walked slowly closer to it. In summary, fantastic lens for handheld photography and for tripod videography. But not reliable for handheld videography. HTH.

@@BlueSkyBonsai Hi Dave, thanks for such a quick and detailed response certainly food for thought and sounds like the focus speed is not quite such the deal breaker on video that others make it out to be. The IS for video is likely to make way more difference than the focus limitations. Thanks again and I enjoyed your videos, beautiful looking Bonsai's I don't know how you have the patience! it's certainly one (major) aspect of my decision. acquiring AF on mirrorless bodies means the more light the better. even if you shoot at f/2.0 on the 1.4 samyang it will temporarily open up the aperture to 1.4 to help acquire focus. I really want that capability if I'm shooting in a low light situation, which I often am.

Another KZbin video said the Samyang missed focus more than it should for a mirrorless camera. I don’t know what firmware it had. It would seem that Canon has made it difficult to reverse engineer their AF protocol to stop 3rd party lenses from being as good. I can’t be sure if he said that the Canon was better at locking AF in backlit scenarios compared to the Samyang.
@cooloox3 жыл бұрын
@@sexysilversurfer I bought the EF version of the Samyang lens, which has slightly different optics. The AF (via EF to RF adapter) is much more reliable than my friend's Canon RF 85mm F2. It tracks walking and jogging subjects coming straight towards the camera, wide open, flawlessly. I'm using the Samyang on an EOS RP and he's using the Canon lens on an EOS R. We swapped lenses and he instantly noticed his face detection kicked in sooner and I noticed it kicked in later on the Canon lens. His hit rate went up, mine went down. Even when the eye and/or face detection box was on target, the Canon lens was too slow for tracking. It would nail some shots and be soft on others. The Samyang is sharp 100% of the time if the AF box is where it should be. So many reviewers are reaching different conclusions that it leads me to question the quality control (consistency) of both the Canon and Samyang 85mm lenses. I'm lucky to have a great one. By buying the EF version I get the control ring (on the adapter) missing from the RF version of the Samyang lens.

@@sexysilversurfer I am using ef version of Samyang with Canon adapter. Autofocus is fast and accurate. One thing about third party lenses are that they have to replicate canon’s technology if they want to make a similar lense for it but the quality of the lenses always falls tad short. Samsung autofocus on the rp is not tack sharp for me and the issue I constantly have is when I go to focus and the subject moves a little bit then the focus is moved somewhere else. and although 1.2f is great, taking portraits I would like the subject background to be noticeable a little bit. 2f stop has a great blur as well as a beautiful finish to the photo that doesn’t require tons of editing. Besides what does a lens have to do with interesting or not interesting photos? If a photo doesn't look interesting, then blame the photographer, not the gear.

One of the worst reviews I've ever seen on KZbin. It makes no sense at all.

feel free to make your own review and counter me. I actually just forgot to send it back, and haven't picked this lens up since. Samyang 1.4 RF is the way to go for the vast VAST majority of users.

Meh. This lens is great for the price. Sure wider apertures are always nice but f 2.0 is more than enough. I'll take the semi macro capabilities any day over the wider aperture. Also it also has IS which is quite nice to have. Its also fairly compact. This lens has more than enough background separation and f2 is still pretty open especially compared to a standard telephoto. For me I call this bollocks.

totally fine for you to have your own opinion. I think the previous 85 1.2 EF is FAR better for portrait work. IS is not that big of a deal if your using a camera with IBIS (I am), and f/2.0 is a completely different look/aesthetic than 1.4, or even 1.8. I recommend the samyang 85 1.4 RF any day over this lens for anyone that primarily shoots portraits & weddings - no question.

Why are so many people here taking your decision to return your lens on a personal level? You have a valid reason for your professional work flow to return your lens. At any rate I always enjoy your well thought well presented material! Thanks so much.

‘tis the internet. people don’t like thinking they made a wrong choice etc. it’s a fine lens in very specific scenarios… none of which I need.

I think Samyang is only better in Bokeh
